This was a super-duper entertain packaged game played on Goldstones in Pietermaritzburg. When 70-points get scored in 70-minutes, there is room for constructive negative comments about defensive structures and tackling, however during this game it really felt like the positives like attacking running lines, strength in contact, individual skills and good handling was more responsible for the high score than defensive lapses.…
Just when you thought that the UCT win against Pukke would be the comeback of the season, Grey High pulled off a 26-0 turnaround in less than 20 minutes to win this game 27-26 with the winning points coming off the last play of the game. Queen’s College will host Selborne as part of their Reunion weekend celebrations. Queen’s haven’t lost on their famous ground, “The Rec” since Dale won there in 2011. That’s a long and proud winning streak that the Queenians would love to extend via claiming the scalp of the East London powerhouse.…

It almost feels like an understatement suggesting that the Affies versus Klofies rugby battle attracts a lot of interest. It’s a huge game on the Pretoria and South African school rugby calendar. Once again the proof was in the pudding, the pavilion and the surrounding grounds were packed with spectators for this derby.…

Many passionate school rugby followers of the Eastern Cape region were able to attend the Graeme Rugby Day and the Grey High Festival. I asked a handful of these supporters of the wonderful game to come up with their selections for a combined Eastern Province / Border team. Here is the net result of their combined efforts:…
There is a very positive vibe about Noordvaal school rugby going around right now. The 2014 season is still young but recent victories by Noordvaal schools over last season’s Western Cape pace setters, Paarl Gim and Outeniqua has certainly shifted attention to the Highveld where there looks to be plenty of quality on offer.…
Midweek action in KZN sees Durban High School square off against potential banana peel team Clifton College on Wednesday evening at 19h15 on Van Heerden’s field. 3 days later DHS travels up the M13 to play an ever improving Westville.…
What a final! UCT looked dead and buried and then some at 33-15 after 73-minutes. Pukke’s machine of a hooker Armand van der Merwe (Duhan’s older boet) looked all set to be the Man of the Match. The fat lady was warming up her vocal cords, the engraver was about to incise the letters “N-W-U” on the cup but then it happened. The dramatic and incredible comeback. UCT scored once, scored twice! Got the score back to 33-31 down with virtually no time left. Then Pukke had the ball game with time up, hooter gone and a deep pass to flyhalf Johnny Welthagen in the pocket. All he had to do was kick the ball into touch, knock it on or kill play somehow but instead he went for the drop goal, got charged down and possession was turned over to the Ikeys students. Huge BMT followed and via some excellent composed handling the Tiger stripes created some space on an inside line and the rest is history. UCT 39 Pukke 33. What a great final!…

Many believe that today’s schoolboy players are far larger than 20 years ago. I agree that today due to improved supplements, gym programmes, professional trainers etc that the boys are physically better conditioned and the games have more ‘physicality’ if such a word actually exists. It seems to be all that commentators talk about these days.…
Western Cape schoolboy rugby will be at peak activity this Saturday, 12 March. The televised game between Paul Roos and Grey High (PE) will be an option for everyone to watch. However the live game for neutrals to get to must surely be Bishops versus Boland Landbou…
SA cricketer Herschelle Gibbs of Bishop’s has often been described as one of the finest SA schoolboy rugby flyhalves of all times. Interestingly when it comes to conversations about outstanding school flyhalves, there are still strong associations made to the performances of SA cricketing greats Peter Kirsten (SACS), Lee Barnard (KES) and Daryll Cullinan (Queen’s). Apart from Gibbs, Maritzburg College flyhalf Udo Goedeke also represented both codes at SA Schools level.…
The South African Rugby Union (SARU) on Friday named a reduced SA Under-20 training squad of 36 players for the remainder of the 2014 IRB Junior World Championship (JWC) training camp following two trial matches in Stellenbosch this week.
