Just when you thought that the UCT win against Pukke would be the comeback of the season, Grey High pulled off a 26-0 turnaround in less than 20 minutes to win this game 27-26 with the winning points coming off the last play of the game. Below is a match journal of the highlights from Paul Roos vs Grey High inter-schools match on 12 April 2014.
5min: PRG no.8 Joa Swart advances ahead of the kicker. GPE flyhalf Curwin Bosch makes a good connection from a penalty 53m out but does not have the direction.
8min: PRG flyhalf Aiden Cupido attempts a poor drop goal.
10min: PRG miss a golden opportunity to go wide when deep on attack but still manage to carry the ball over the tryline where they are held up.
11min: From the 5m scrum, PRG stays on attack. Cupido drifts and holds long enough to create man for man marking miscommunication amongst the GPE defenders and once the defender in front of him turns a shoulder away, the PRG flyhalf attacks the opening and scores under the posts. He then converts to give PRG a 7-0 lead.
14min: PRG drops the ball. GPE attacks and their no.8 Josh Mudrovcic drives play forward. Play is halted and the ref calls them back for a high tackle penalty against PRG. Bosch tees up but misses a kickable penalty.
16min: PRG look very sharp at the breakdown in the opening part of this match. They compete fiercely for any ball on the deck and it more often than not returns rewards their way.
19min: PRG centre Matt Gallow toes a ball ahead and then his wing Edwill van der Merwe gets to the ball first and hacks it even further downfield. Bosch is initially alone at the back and panics. When he can’t step his way out of danger, he makes a suicidal pass near his tryline. GPE are saved by an early tackle call on scrumhalf Brody von Goevreden.
22min: Player of the match, GPE fullback Keanu Vers almost gets through a gap when his team runs the ball but a crucial ankle tap by PRG centre Edrich Venter prevents Vers from making the clean linebreak.
23min: GPE captain and flank Johan van Niekerk is onto the tackled ball in a flash to help win his team a penalty. Bosch however fails with his third attempt at goal.
24min: Vers produces a playmaking moment of brilliance that should have been rewarded in a try. The fullback chips and collects his own kick on a counter-attack and then delivers a textbook pass to his right wing Athi Mayinje, who drops it cold with no one in front of him. A guaranteed 7-points go abegging but Mayinje would more than repay his teammates for his error by saving two tries later on in the game.
27min: A super tackle by one of the GPE locks stops Venter in his tracks and eventually leads to PRG conceding a penalty. GPE do not go for posts, instead setting up an attacking lineout where they lose the ball soon after the lineout. By this stage GPE are struggling for any form of continuity in their game.
28min: The PRG lineout functions very well and they win a penalty from the ensuing rolling maul. The match is being characterised by a lot of high kicks.
30min: Another lineout to PRG, this time just outside the GPE 22m brings out the best in one of PRG’s best players on the day, lock Emile Cloete. He takes the ball in the middle of the setpiece, realises that he is not being marked once he lands, so goes through the hole, brushes off a tackle and rushes towards the GPE tryline. Mayinje makes a try saving tackle which forces the ball loose.
31min: PRG keeps up the pressure and generates an overlap to the right. Basic ball through the hands rugby offers right wing Nico Leonard the chance to score towards the right corner. PRG leads 12-0. Cupido misses the kick.
33min: Van Niekerk breaks for GPE but he falls into the same trap as many of his teammates by desperately trying to make an offload in the tackle that does not come off. There are numerous mistakes being made by both teams.
34min: A Venter crashball run results in a crack in the GPE defence. Gallow is part of a good carry upfield that follows but the ball is dropped by Swart and with it a good opportunity to score a try just before halftime is lost.
Halftime: Paul Roos leads 12-0. The stats show that they have scored 2 tries from 4 visits to the GPE 22m.
36min: Bosch’s clearance kick gets charged down. The ball rolls over the deadball line.
39min: Leonard chases a box kick from second half PRG hero at scrumhalf Herschel Jantjies. GPE allows the kick to bounce and Leonard is very unlucky not to reclaim the ball. If he had, he might have been able to run in 40m for a try.
40min: It’s noted that the schoolboy scrums are like clockwork. No restart or reset problems whatsoever.
41min: Vers manufactures a great break all on his own but then attempts a crazy offload which hands possession straight back to a PRG player. His opposite number Morne Taljaard, enjoying a good game then sets off on an attack of his own that gives PRG a handy field position in the end.
42min: Another good solid lineout by PRG allows them to execute a disguised set move. What appears to be a rolling maul sucks in defenders and nippy Jantjies is given a run at the tryline. His try is converted by Cupido for a 19-0 lead.
44min: In a flash the opportunistic Jantjies chips and chases, catching GPE off guard. The scrumhalf outstrips the defenders in pursuit of a ball bouncing into the in-goal area and appears to have applied downward pressure but it’s Athi Mayinje who has somehow employed soccer skills and managed to get his foot to the ball first to prevent an almost certain try.
46min: GPE’s troubles go from bad to worse as captain van Niekerk is forced to leave the field injured.
47min: Vers manages to rip the ball from Leonard just 5m from the GPE tryline. It’s all PRG at this stage.
49min: Supersub prop Jerome Korff is normally a first choice player for PRG but as part of PRG’s squad system he is forced less than half a game off the bench. After Taljaard does well earlier in the play when the ball went down the PRG line, it’s Korff who is on half to produce a big leg drive and power his way over from close range. The conversion is good and PRG leads 26-0.
51min: GPE centre Jeremy Ward has taken over the captaincy. He drops a pass in midfield and the body language suggests that GPE have lost focus and are a beaten team with 19 minutes still to go.
52min: Keanu Vers starts the biggest comeback in the short history of Premier Interschools televised rugby. The in-form player uses his superior footwear to get past PRG would-be tacklers. He then produces a great offload to his left wing Nathan Brown who runs in for his team’s opening score. Bosch adds 2 and it’s 26-7.
53min: Vers produces yet another moment of brilliance. He beats defenders once again using his lateral movement skills and straight-line speed. This time he passes to right wing Mayinje who still has work to do to get over the tryline. The GPE wing manages to muscle the ball to the ground and the try is given. The kick is missed leaving the score at 26-12.
57min: PRG is awarded a penalty when GPE slow the ball down at the ruck. Replacement flyhalf Reinhardt Fortuin misses the kick at goal.
59min: The ref advances a penalty a total of 20m when PRG fails to retreat the required distance. A good run by GPE flank Matthew Lawson, places the home team even further on the back foot. Bosch wipes a long pass out wide where de Marco comes up with good hands to collect the ball off the bounce and to set his hooker and hero end of the last quarter Robin Stevens free. Stevens draws the defenders in and passes to Mayinye who scores his second try. Bosch converts to make it a very respectable 26-19.
62min: The momentum in the game has completely shifted the way of GPE and it’s PRG that look nowhere in spite of having 8 fresh new players on Markotter field. GPE runs the ball from a penalty at the ruck and then kicks ahead. PRG just-just wins the race to get to the ball ahead of Vers.
64min: GPE moves the ball through the hands from right to left and then back again. Stevens is on hand once again for a vital carry and its Mudrovcic, who also had an excellent game that finishes with the try. An unsuccessful conversion means that PRG still leads 26-24 but also results in Grey wanting to go all out in attack to win the game.
66min: Everything is going GPE’s way now. Bosch kicks a touch penalty from inside his own 22m that goes out on the PRG 5m line.
67min: GPE think they have scored a try when they catch a poor clearance kick made under duress from the PRG deadball line and dive over in the corner. The ref however rules offside and PRG has a chance to bring about relief, except that their kick only goes out on their 22m line.
68min: PRG seals off the ball at the ruck while still inside their own 22m after the lineout. Bosch has a chance to put his team ahead for the first time but his kick hits the upright and Swart gathers the ball off the bounce in the field of play for PRG.
69min: PRG seem to have the game in the bag, they control and slow the ball down at the ruck but forget to find out from the ref if time is up and instead kick it into touch.
70min: The ref decides there is time for one more lineout. GPE takes the throw-in and sets a rolling maul which PRG collapses and are penalised once again. Although Bosch is only 3 from 8 from the kicking tee and the kick is at an acute angle, captain Ward does not hesitant to show the confidence in his young flyhalf and informs the ref of his decision to go for posts. Bosch calmly slots the kick. The final whistle blows and Grey High of Port Elizabeth have their third win in a row against Paul Roos, winning this one 27-26, a 27-point comeback in just 18 or so minutes.

An excellent game of schoolboy rugby
Dis darem doodstil daar uit George se wereld……
Maroon8.
Balikibaba. I agree. As I said last week. Squad systems in normal Saturday games are not necessary. To me personally it’s a bit arrogant!!!!!
@Tandem: I arrived at the field during the Bituas (seconds) game, and PRG won that one. It looked like a very lacklustre affair from where I was saituated. It was very hot, all seats on the stands were taken by people trying to escape the blistering sun, and being accompanied by my wife and young children, we were forced to sit on the Bloemhof side under the oak trees. So, we could not see much, apart from in the main game, the ref’s arm going up for yet another penalty. I think most teams won. I unfortunately could not make the hockey as planned, but that appears to be a (surprise) win. Dont know what happened in the shore angling in Struisbaai, although Struisbaai is much closer to my farm where we had to drive from for the day’s entertainment. Perhaps the fishing would have been a more satisfying option…haha
@Balikibaba: Agree 100%
@BuffelsCM: Thanks Buffels. Tight games all along .
@Tandem: According to the following site:

PR U/16 20 -10; PR U/15 21 – 21; PR U/14 15 – 13
@Deon Pitzer: Any other PR scores you can share please ? 014 /15 /16 ?
A Squad system has ZERO place in schoolboy rugby. ZERO! I have said it before and I will say it again. Let the boys play! Bring on your 2nd team players when needed, but do NOT have schoolboys play 10 minutes of rugby a week just because you, as a coach, think you are coaching the Springboks.
There, I have said it. LOL. Off my chest now.
Well done GHS. I was there. Very impressive and you all can be very proud of your team.
Obviously the squad system does not work PR coach!!! Or you just have got no clue how to use it!!! Well done to Grey PE!!
Curwin Bosch…..a bulls three year contract is waiting for you boet…. just please improve your consistency in goal kicking.
Well done Grey, the PRG boys must be gutted
Let me begin by saying how unbelievably proud I am of my old school Grey. Absolutely brilliant to come back from the deficit. To beat such a great school on their home field missing 5 players , to lose your captain and plus two more players on the day and then win shows massive character. I cannot be more proud.
To Paul Roos supporters I must say well played. You have a great side this year and I’m sure that this match will not hault what will still be a great season for you. All the best for the season.
official teams for tomorrow……

@jmh0101: a win for us would definitely get things going nicely
@phat55:Thanks, A win vs Landbou will do us the world of good for the upcoming season as I’m sure will be the same if Paul Roos beat Grey. Certainly not missing it on Supersport. Hopefully can kick off my sa premier school superbru with a bang! (Paul Roos by 5)
@jmh0101: yip it was a tough period for those boys when only one made the squad & everyone knew they deserved to be there.harsh reality check as well, but I honestly believe it has made them more determined! definitely wont forget that Bishops centre of last year (Cornel Smit iirc),he made a massive impact & almost won them the game.oh & im backing Bishops to get the win because they looked sharp at Newlands day & they have home ground advantage,so good luck!!
@phat55: Thanks for that phat. I seriously hope things are right this time around in the selection of the Grant Khomo Side and The Craven Week side for WP. Last year was something that I would never want to see again. Yes there are certain players from Gim and Paarl Boys that deserve to be there such as: T schoor, K Abrahams and Cassiem-February but then again there was something very wrong with the selection of only 1 Paul Roos player on the bench.. Also I’m sure you remember the Bishops centre that had a wonderful game vs Paul Roos U16 last year! 8) ;) haha.. Anyway lets hope WP get things right this time around. and Espically in 2015 when its the current grade 11 year’s matric. Again good luck for Sat, hoping that the boys in blue can pull off a win against Landbou!
After beating Paul Roos two years in a row I was possitive about a hatrick coming up over this weekend but with 5 key players missing from Grey High team Paul Roos have to be top dogs to win by 15 !
It’s going to be a cracker!
go Grey!
@jmh0101: there are about 5 involved with the 1st team of which 3 will be in the starting line-up for this coming Saturday.it’ll be good to see how they stack up against a good team like Grey High as they’ve performed well in the few games thus far & the coaches must be seeing something to give them a go in the starting line-up.there’s another 5 or 6 in the 2nd team, who actually start & the rest are in the 3rd team
@ maroon8 – there are THREE in the starting line-up for this coming Saturday & im very sure all involved are not under estimating Grey High…its gonna be a tough game!
I’m going with our cousins from Nelson Mandela Bay on this one.
GO PYJAMA BOYS!!
@BOG: Ag nee wat Bog, het regtig gereken op jou steun? Paul Roos kan nie bekostig om die een te laat glip nie. As hulle met die Wes Kaap se groot honde wil saam gesels moet hierdie n breakfast run wees. Hokkie sal kwaai wees.
PRG are good friends, but in this case, I have to go for “de brudder of de udder mudder”- Grey High. And also for printing that T-shirt in 2009 !
@jmh0101: The ones not playing in the 1st team squad are kept together as the 3rd team.
@phat55: All the best to Paul Roos on Saturday. Just out of interest, from the majority of the very talented U16 group of last year – are they all playing in 1 team or are they being split up? Because next year for schoolboy rugby will showcase some of the best schoolboy talent in the world I would think to be very honest.
apparently there’ll be three grade11 kids in the PRG starting team for this saturday’s game…..lets see how it goes!
