Varsity Cup 2014 : UCT’s amazing comeback win! Unbelievable!

What a final! UCT looked dead and buried and then some at 33-15 after 73-minutes. Pukke’s machine of a hooker Armand van der Merwe (Duhan’s older boet) looked all set to be the Man of the Match. The fat lady was warming up her vocal cords, the engraver was about to incise the letters “N-W-U” on the cup but then it happened. The dramatic and incredible comeback. UCT scored once, scored twice! Got the score back to 33-31 down with virtually no time left. Then Pukke had the ball game with time up, hooter gone and a deep pass to flyhalf Johnny Welthagen in the pocket. All he had to do was kick the ball into touch, knock it on or kill play somehow but instead he went for the drop goal, got charged down and possession was turned over to the Ikeys students. Huge BMT followed and via some excellent composed handling the Tiger stripes created some space on an inside line and the rest is history. UCT 39 Pukke 33. What a great final!

@playa. We must know each other – my better half works with you. She is the mad hatter/party mad lady! I think you will know who I am !

@Beet I did feel all the big calls went against Pukke and I did feel for them after it was all over, they deserved more for their efforts. It was not a tip tackle, maybe just a little dangerous, a debatable penalty and never a yellow card.

As an Ikey supporter the “never say die” attitude of our players and the unbelievable rugby we played in the last 6 minutes will be a rugby memory until the day I die. Have watched the You Tube clip a few times. It was a shame there had to be a loser on the day.

@Playa: I must say I was very disappointed when Dillon Smit’s try for Pukke was disallowed because of the tip-tackle call.

@Greenwood: It’s an experiment. To see if ref mistakes cannot be minimised.Last night’s game exposed the flaws.

@Verdwaalde Vrystater: Moenie so gou op jou perdjie spring, ek is self n oud Affie.

    @Johan Beyers:

Hoekom is dit so erg Johan?

@Greenwood: If their was three refs one ref would have taken the part of one ref and with that admitted that the other ref made a mistake. Too risky because if refs start to admit they make mistakes they have to enlist bigger refs as those with “kleinmannetjiesindroom” will not believe in themselves. Unfortunately if bigger refs are employed a fist fight between the ref and players who disagree will become the norm and who will then red card the ref. Starting the whole debate again is refs honest fair and unbias?
No just joking only an test run by SARU. Maybe a thing in the future.

@BOG: A very expensive drop kick – cost his team R100 000 (being the difference in the 1st vs 2nd place cheques).

A final to be remembered for a long time.

@Playa. Did you go to the match on Monday? Got soaked to the bone but it was well worth it. I sit close to you, I sit with all the old toppies next to the scoreboard. You guys usually do most of the singing but on Monday a few of the older guys who grew up with the “old” Intervarsity started singing “die SACS come terug” which was great. I thought our pack was magnificent. MacDonald (an Afrikaans Mac from Tygerberg) and Michael Both, ex Wynberg and the front row Carew (ex Bosch), Neil Rautenbach (ex Paarl Boys/Edgemead Jnr) and Webb, ex SACS were standout.

@BuffelsCM: I have been really happy for him as it appeared that with the arrival in Natal of Swiel, Du Preez’s place in rugby was being badly threatened.

He has shown he has what it takes – some of his passing was just sublime, his reading of the game last night was exceptional – brilliant performance

@RBugger: I have to admit that I have never been a big Robert du Preez fan. During the Varsity Cup he has really impressed me though in a team that did not perform well for a large part of the competition. He had the one blemish only when the clearance kick was charged down.
He had a cracker of a game. He did not only score a lot of points with the boot but the manner he put away some of the guys for their tries was quite brilliant. The momentum of the game also changed when he scored his try.

@Woltrui: I agree Wollie !! It seems that the Danie Craven stadium has not been a happy hunting ground for Reniel Hugo. Last year his side was destroyed in the final and this year his “new” team was kicked out of the competition at the same stadium.

At half-time I thought Tuks had done enough but wow did Maties impress me with their fighting spirit and determination – 41 points in 40 minutes !!

The way Tukkies played last night  – didn’t deserve a play off spot. Why o why would the tactic be to kick up n unders if the Varsity cup rule is that you can catch a free kick any where in your own half? The amount off balls that were kicked away in the first half when Tuks ran the show were astounding. The management of this team should drop their heads in shame. A couple of players with big reputations in Tuks also came down to earth with a bang-read-the highly rated centres. The biggest University in the country not even in the top 4 :-x
Hats off to Maties who showed that guts, loyality and commitment can still win big matches.
