Blogger Woltrui’s comments on the game translated into English:

The smallish Klofies side enjoyed 70% territorial advantage in the first half.
Paarl Gim’s inside centre (Andri Cooper who replaced the injured Wayno Visagie) kicked three well struck penalties.
One kick was from the halfway line, the other from inside his own half and an easier one from Klofies’ 22m line.
Klofies missed two shots at goal from the Gim 10m line.
Waterkloof also missed two opportunities to score tries from attacks near the Gim tryline.
Paarl Gim only managed to generate one genuine attacking opportunity in the first half.
It was manufactured by their outside centre and left wing combining well and the attack eventually resulted in one of the penalties that was converted.
From the second half kickoff, Gim made a mistake, which Klofies pounced on and were once again stopped on the Gim tryline.
WK then conceded a penalty and Gim relieved the pressure.
Then against the run of play, Gim fly-hacked a loose ball ahead. What was a bad bounce for the WK defender proved to be kind one for Gim’s big lock who gathered the ball and Gim had their opening try.
Kloof then left points on the table by not kicking for poles and instead opting to set attacking lineouts from penalties.
They however let different opportunities slip through their fingers such the time when they had a lineout 5m from the Paarl Gim tryline and the WK lock knocked on.
On another occasion WK failed to tap the ball before playing it from a penalty also deep in the Gim redzone. After these Klofies near misses, Gim set up a 5m attacking lineout of their own from an accurately punted penalty kick.
Gim collected the lineout throw, set a rolling maul and drove over the WK line for a try.
WK eventually got a try from a penalty 5m from the Gim line after the big Gim prop had been sin binned.
Conclusion:
The final score of 24-10 to Paarl Gim did not tell the true story of what happened on the night.
Gim has a big pack of forwards.
The Gim tighthead prop gave his opponent a lot of trouble in the scrums all evening.
Both lineouts were a bit sloppy (early season issues to blame)
Gim has a well drilled rolling maul in which their forwards are very organised
Klofies are the typical Waterkloof team that plays with a lot of heart.
Kloof will have to improve their discipline at the rucks. They were pinged a number of times for not releasing the tackler before they played the ball.
The penalty count must have been about 15-6 against Waterkloof but was deserved.
The player of the match was probably the Gim no.12 who’s place kicking and punting impressed.
The quality of play of both teams was disappointing on the whole but early season must have had a lot to do with this.

Ek het so in my ‘n gevoel gehad dit gaan gebeur.

@Duppie: A less successful big school in Centurion without a boarding facility, has a total of around 300 boys that do sport. This includes all sport from archery to water polo. Most boys do more than 1 sport. That is why they never seem to be at the highest level. Thst I think is the main difference between Affies etc

@ Kosie. All the big schools in Pretoria that you mentioned does not have close to the amount of boys than Affies and Pretoria boys high have. Menlopark is a brilliant athletics and hockey school though. Their rugby are now following

@Vleis: @beet: probably slightly more girls than boys… cant say why they only go to c-teams… probably due to hockey

Lets put things in perspective. The biggest schools in terms of numbers in Pretoria are probably: Waterkloof, Garsfontein, Eldoraigne, Centurion, Menlopark, Wonderboom, Zwartkop then only will Affies and PBHS come. The first named all have more than 1400 learners

Rugbyman. When you say Menlo has 1800 learners is that boys and girls, so on other words 900 boys?

@Rugbyman: 1800 learners?! Wow, I was told that they had 1200 learners.

If you are correct, then they must have about 900 boys, so why don’t they have more rugby teams? I think that they only go down to C teams at age group level. How many boys are there at Garsfontein?

@Rugbyman: This is a huge result for Menlopark. Its always refreshing to see the smaller schools beat the much bigger schools.

@Umtata: Yes, minus Grant Hermanus and Wayno Visagie. Gim has a big pack with a solid set-piece and good maul, but without the 2 mentioned players, they have less teeth at the back. Irrespective of this result they will still be very competitive, but as I mentioned is the case with Outeniqua after watching them, they are not on par with the 2013 team and may lack a bit of depth.

Ooploop.

It puts the GCB side’s victory over Menlo in perspective – I think GCB will dominate this year and will end the year unbeaten and No.1. I hope Affies can at least put up a good show against them but I am afraid the tables will be turned this year.

Dankie Woltrui, dis ‘n baie volledige verslag.
