@Parkie: Welcome to the blog. I think it might be too hard to do but I can certainly put up a list of MANY (obviously not all) of the leading players from around SA.

You can help by giving a list of the standout Menlopark players.

@Queenian: Shucks! Pretty consistent. Only the 90s were close. I think there may have been a year or 2 there when Dale won more

I’ll see what I can dig up re Selbone vs Dale derbies. But I know that since I was there in the 90s, Selborne always got the better of us. It wouldn’t have changed much in the 2000s.

Judging from the QC results vs Selborne, the Dale-QC derbies should be reasonably close this year…I hope

@Woltrui: Ek spot net. Manne onthou net ek is ook n Blou Bul, my klong het saam Thinus de Beer hulle vir die Bulle 0/12 span gespeel, so ons het ook n draai in PTA gemaak, ma is toe trug puma land toe.

Ja ek gaan KERF toe so ons moet maar n braai inwerk.

@Woltrui: Wollie. It sounds like Thinus de Beer the Klofies flyhalf is a player for all to watch when Wildeklawer is on TV.

So many good SBR flyhalves around at the moment. I would really like to see higher quality at 9 and 13 coming through. These two positions also happen to be slots that the Bok team is short of top quality in as well right now.

The best two players I saw the past week. The no 10 of Waterkloof. The best performance by a 10 since Mister Pollard dropped the SA U/20 to world cup glory a season or two ago. a Cool cucumber if I ever saw one.
Secondly the no 15, Vers, of Grey PE. Vision, hands and speed in abundance. Must be very difficult to defend against a player of his calibre and quality.

@Queenian: Jeez! How times have changed. I saw the scores on Selborne’s website. There were some mismatches there.Intersting that the 6th team was SC’s only loss. I think it was the same for their derby against Dale last year…

Do you perhaps have something similar for the QC-Dale derbies over the decades?

Daai porra look.

Just to show how things have changed this is the record for QC vs Selborne Derby in Queenstown over the decades.

    1964 Played 15 Won 9 Lost 6
    1974 Played 19 Won 11 Lost 6 Drew 2
    1984 Played 23 Won 18 Lost 3 Drew 1
    1994 Played 22 Won 11 Lost 10 Drew 1
    2004 Played 20 Won 9 Lost 11
    2014 Played 18 Won 1 Lost 17

Shows how Selborne’s depth as got better as time has gone. And that is from 1st team to Under 14D

@Playa: Ye that’s a record Queens biggest loss at the Rec was 38-3 to GCB this is far as I can see is Queens biggest loss ever anywere 58 – 11 that’s a points difference of 47 points that beats the 55 -14 loss to Grey Bloem.

And as far as I know Queens have only lost by more than 25 points on the rec 5 times this being the no 6th.

Wow this Queens side is poor must be one of the worst in history, I still believe Dale will give Selborne a decent run for there money specially at the graveyard.

If Queens carry on like this I doubt they will beat any of the Border teams this especially Dale.

    Sad day

@Roger: These “fightbacks” are going to be the in-thing this season. I believe they will cause major upsets throughout this season, well done to KES for not giving up. Cambridge was trailing 15-3 at the break and clawed their way back into to win the game 17-15.

@Tandem: Tandem, hats off to you my friend!
My vrinne wat bietjie rugby verstaan het my ‘n ander storie vertel!

So ek sien geen teenstand vir Grey vanjaar.

Behalwe natuurlik soos altyd by Grey……..veral daai Muffin span.

@Duppie: Baie goeie opsomming Doepie! My vrinne suid van die Waterberge het min of meer dieselfde my meegedeel! Dinge moet net jel!

(Waar vind jy sulke waardevolle eiendom in Oubaai?)

@ Horsy- I liked the flyhalf for the DHS U16. He definitely had presence and vision and even the confidence to throw in a few tricky moves( dummies ect). Someone to watch going forward.
DHS played with passion and as a team and deserved to beat a team littered with X-Factor but no cohesion or direction. Well done.

    Results Wynberg vs Rondebosch
    Ist Wynberg won 59-21
    U16 A Wynberg won 22-18
    U15A Wynberg won 27-8
    U14 A Wynberg lost 15-17

All games were played in a heat wave not suited to playing rugby and energy sapping.

Heartbreak for the under 14 A as they lost when Bosch scored of the final move of the game.

The under 15 A team is very well coached and lost to this Bosch team when under 14 but they are playing with a lot of confidence and fighting spirit and won fairly easily. Some good runners in the backline.

The under 16 ‘s played a tough Bosch team with a big pack of forwards. Bosch dominated the tight/tight loose winning turnovers at will. Wynberg will have to work at clearing out and protecting the ball more. They also tried too often to take on the Bosch pack instead of giving it to the flyhalf (who has great skills and will go far)to kick for territory or to run it more. The Wynberg backs were far superior on attack with a lot of flair.

The first team game was one sided and I was surprised how “easy” the win was for Wynberg, it could easily have been 70 points. This Rondebosch 8th man Zain Davids stood out and came close to being my man of the match. Despite being in a struggling team he outperformed his opposite number. If he gets injured this Bosch team will struggle more as he has a massive physical presence and also has a massive work rate. For Wynberg the centres , flyhalf and hooker stood out. Bosch have a solid scrum (scored 2 tries off this phase) but little else. Wynberg well coached and very structured.

@Tandem: Point noted Tandem, probably should not have included those details in my comment. My frustration is not with the boys, they play their hearts out irrespective of the position they are selected to play in, it is with the selectors and coaching structures.

@Ooploop: Hi Oogloop I really enjoy people speaking their minds and I have no problem with your opinions . The only word of caution is that a lot of schoolboys playing for the various teams under discussion also read these blogs . You are mentioning players you don’t rate in the Affies team by name ( by number ) and although I am sure your intentions are good this can really damage a young person in ways you never intended . The Affies boys running out for that first team are all running out with pride for their school and they don’t select themselves . I am as passionate as you are about my school but have decided never to comment negatively on a boy playing in a team . It could have been my ( your ) son playing his heart out there . I think that the biggest issue probably currently , in most schools , is not the coaching but the selecting of the right players in the right positions .

@Balikibaba: Or apparently the penalty count reflects that Boland did most of the playing, Bishops infringed under pressure for most parts of the match, Boland converted some of these penalties (although 2 hit the posts) and missed out on a few try scoring opportunities, while Bishops converted their chances when presented.

There’s no comments column though, a strong Bishops team did well to pull through at home against a young Boland team that most here had losing by a big margin beforehand. Enjoy your moment in the sun, Mr Rugby Matters and all the other sour bek toffs.

Nommer 13 moet vleuel speel en no 12 is n loskakel.

So ek glo dit sal voorlangs nou baie meer gelyk wees.

@Umtata: “Late flash : It has just been learnt that the SACS – HTS Drostdy game has been cancelled. SACS reportedly raised their unhappiness about playing playing the Donkeys with the WP Schools authorities last year and have now followed through on their evident grievances.

Although the reason cited was a reluctance at having to play a side as far away as Worcester – moreover one from another province – as they felt that they had more than enough commitments within the Western Province, all of which they faithfully meet, it is believed that there are other underlying reasons, including the standard of refereeing on the far side of the mountain.” – See more at: http://www.stoopstats.co.za/#sthash.5TziwTxM.dpuf

@Playa: Most of the unbeaten 1984 rugby team (including a 26-9 win over GCB in Bloem) will be at Queens this weekend for a 30 year reunion. They will be coming from all over the world – the US even.

If that doesn’t spur on Queens to beat Selborne then nothing will. Still…a very difficult task based on recent form.
