The undefeated KwaZulu-Natal under-18 Academy Week team will play in the final game of the 2014 Academy Week against Western Province. KZN earned this reward via two very good victories against South Western Districts (32-18) and Eastern Province (61-12).…
This is quite interesting. Of the 50 players picked for the SA under-16 High Performance in 2010, 11 were selected three years late to play for the SA under-20 team (Baby Boks) at the Junior World Championships.…

Previously this squad would assemble for a rugby course later on in the year after the school rugby season has concluded and receive valuable assistance from specialists. Many top achieving rugby players will again be part of the HP squad in 2014.
Here is a look at where the 2012 under-16 candidates are now in 2014 as under-18 players:…

Western Province proved far too classy for Mpumalanga, beating the Lowvelders 56-0 in the biggest win of the day, while Border delivered a polished performance, easing past the Blue Bulls 52-10. The Leopards proved far too strong for Border Country Districts and won 37-5, whilst Boland carried too many guns for Griffons, winning 43-12.The Griquas were another team to score at will, beating Zimbabwe 36-12, but the other matches proved to be tightly contested affairs. In an early morning upset, SWD held on to beat Free State 10-8, hosts KZN came up short against the Golden Lions, who won 15-12 and Eastern Province kept out Limpopo Blue Bulls to win 17-12. The Valke also battled hard to overcame a plucky Namibian side by 13-0.
Okay okay KZN does not take part in the annual Under-19 Noordvaal Week which starts at Pukke on 30 June 2014 but I thought it would be a fun exercise to pick a KZN team from the fit players that were either overlooked for under-18 Craven Week or Academy Week or who were too old, and potentially could have represented the province with distinction I might add at Noordvaal Week.…

News circulating in the Noordvaal region is that plans are underway to establish a new inter-schools format for the macro schools of the region. Currently an organising committee of sorts is busy working behind the scenes and are at the formulating stage. They will be inviting schools early in the third term for a proposal on this idea. …

The latest media article on KZN school rugby recruitment appeared in the 22 June edition of the Sunday Tribune. There basically wasn’t anything new to offer on a topic that unfortunately is going to eventually lose it’s buzz the more often it gets reported on in the mainstream media. Probably the most interesting bit of information to take out of the report is that the KZN High School Rugby Association and all their affliliate schools will be formulating policy to guide rugby recruitment. It goes on to describe this as a positive attempt by rugby-playing schools to eliminate unfair practices. …
In the past there have been rewards for provincial players that performed well at the under-18 Academy but in 2013 those opportunities seemed to have dried up completely. However news is that like in 2012, SA Schools trials will once again take place in Kempton Park on the first weekend after schools reopen : 26-27 July 2014. If the SA Schools organisers decide to adopt the same criteria as they did in 2012, it means the door will be open for Academy Week players to be chosen for SA Schools.…
