SA u16 High Performance Squad 2012: where they are in 2014

One of the exciting end products of Grant Khomo Week, the national under-16 provincial youth tournament, is the selection of an SA under-16 High Performance squad. @slinger: Not really good news. Everybody know the fact that boys develop at different stages. This just show that the unions stick to their purchase from GK. If 30% of u/13 make GK u/16 then only 60% should be achieved here. Again showing the influence of the Unions. It would be interesting to hear from bigger schools what their conversion rate is from u/16 to 1st 15.

The positive side is that most players made CW u18 with a few that dropped to Academy sides. Will be interesting to match the 50 squad after CW vs the u16 initial SA group. I know a number of players who will be hard pressed to keep their positions. Besides the camp, did SA Rugby do anything more with this group?

@Playa: It’s actually sad how Border loses out on its best players :( .

I once read this article (http://www.saschoolsports.co.za/rugby/other/rugby-do-co-ed-school-have-a-future.html)

With the way things are going with this “pouching” business, the Border region especially will find it hard to compete against other regions.

@Knight_CHS07: I think you’d be shocked mntam. I am surprised the vultures didn’t deplete Selborne’s 2013 Under 16A team. Maybe they’re still ‘working on it’.

@Playa: :( yho! I guess we’ll never see the true potential of Border Schools Teams. I wonder how many others left Dale, Queens College and Selborne after the GK 2012

I also remembered the story in the paper of the Rugbyseun that was left stranded because of suspected Centurion financial troubles. Noord-Kaap came to his rescue and he is now in the Griquas CW team

Also interesting to note that Fabio Africa is now in Weston Secondary, an inter-provincial move of sorts.

One name that stands out like a sore thumb as always, is that of PJ Toerien. He played WP Grant Khomo, was in the WP u16 HP Squad and made the SA u16 HP squad. Obviously he was developed and received all the recognition and rewards that WP could have offered a player of his caliber at the time, so it remains impossible for me to believe that anything more could/should have justified an inter-provincial gr.10 move. Maybe Rugbyman will explain the motivations behind his move here transparently one day, or maybe on a bad day, I will.

Did Aston Fortuin get poached? Or is it another typo? Maybe he was at Queens High School and not at Queens College?

Just a typo Beet, Jason Steyn is playing for Border CW and not Boland.
