Match Report: Leopards beat the Valke 26-20

  • The Valke go ahead with two early penalties by flyhalf Forrest Roos. 6-0.
  • A big scrum by the Leopards is the starting point of a passage that leads to a Leopards penalty converted by centre Markus Coetzer. 6-3.
  • Valke flank Juanrè vd Walt helps win his team a penalty for holding on the ground. From there the Valke inspired by a Roos change in direction come close to scoring. The powerful Leopards scrum however comes to the rescue of the boys from the North West Province.
  • The Leopards still under threat pull a Valke driving maul down. Roos misses the kick.
  • Leopards score a try via  centre Markus Coetzer as he snipes through a gap near the fringe of a ruck. It all starts for a clean linebreak on the halfway by the self same player. The whole passage of continuous play is a good one for the Leopards. Coetzer converts 6-10.
  • A Valke scrum eventually goes to plan. The ball is spread wide where fullback Martin van Wyk joins the line, beats a marker and draws a second before feeding his wing Tsepe Kokong for a easy run in. Roos converts. 13-10.
  • Coetzee levels the scores with a penalty for the Leopards. 13-13.
  • On halftime the TMO makes a strange ruling (Law 22(g) ) to award a try when the scorer who did not carry the ball placed downward pressure on the ball while his other hand was in touch. The try goes to the Valke scored by Martin van Wyk who did brilliant individual work after claiming a ball in his own half and ending by chasing a ball he kicked ahead into the in-goal area. Roos converts. 20-13.
  • Halftime. Valke leads 20-13.
  • The Valke get a yellow card.
  • More brilliant attacking running by Martin van Wyk of the Valke. The Valke earn a penalty but surprisingly don’t kick at goal.
  • Coetzer reduces the gap with a penalty for the Leopards. 20-16.
  • Leopards flank Brendan Esterhuizen drops down over after a good rolling maul by his team. Coetzer is on song with the kick from the corner. 20-23.
  • The Leopards win a tighthead at scrumtime and once again they use a halfback as a carrier to advance play far over the advantage line. Here at the breakdown they win a penalty which the inform kicker Coetzer slots. 20-26.
  • The Valke run the ball from their own 22m. Again fullback van Wyk is instrumental and wing Tsepe Kokong turns on the afterburners to make his defender look ordinary. Leopards no.8 Edmund Rheeder comes up with huge cross-cover tackle to save the day.
  • Forrest Roos shows his creative class with a beautiful pass in traffic that almost leads to a Valke try.
  • Lack of respect towards the referee costs the Valke another yellow card.
  • Coetzer’s long shot at goal is short and the Valke run the ball from under their own posts.
  • As part of the action-packed finish, the two most impressive backs Martin van Wyk (Valke) and Markus Coetzer both have their chances to attack. Van Wyk makes an attack out of nothing using his pace, however his attempted chip is fielded by Coetzer who races up the right-hand touch before offloading.
  • Final score. Leopards win 26-20.

Lekker game. A very good match up.

I felt for Charl Barkhuizen having to play at centre, having seen him play scrummy very well for EG.
