A summary of the weekend’s matches are:

Western Province 50 (20), Free State 26 (14)

Western Province scored 30 second half points in their 50-26 win over Free State in the City Park Stadium on Saturday. This strong performance was in stark contrast to the first half of the match, where the visitors enjoyed some good territoy and scoring opportunites.

An early yellow card against Western Province left wing, Leolin Zas, left his side reeling in the opening minutes of their season opener against Free State. The visitors used this numerical advantage and scored the first try of the match in the 11th minute to take the lead.

This did not last long though and soon after the return of Zas, his team started hitting the straps. Two tries and two penalties by the accurate Ernst Stapelberg jumped WP into a commanding lead before a late first half try by Os Nche rewarded the young Cheetahs for the efforts.

The second half belonged to WP as their pack took control. Their driving mauls caused havoc in the Free State defence, who responded negatively.

This resulted in two yellow cards to the Cheetahs and to further compound their ill-discipline, Stapelberg kicked a number of penalties to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

A late Free State try gave them a bonus point and some comfort away from home.

Scorers:

Western Province 50 (20). Tries: Brendon Nell, Daniel du Plessis, Frans Roelf van Wyk (2), Leolin Zas. Conversions: Ernst Stapelberg (5). Penalties: Stapelberg (5).
Free State 26 (14). Tries: Abraham Burger, Lorenzo Gordon (2), Ox Nche. Conversions: Andre Swarts (2), Tyron Labuschagne.

Vodacom Blue Bulls 27 (24), EP Kings 17 (10).

The Vodacom Blue Bulls started the defence of their Absa Under-19 Provincial Championship on a positive note on Friday by beating newcomers EP Kings 29-17 at Loftus Versfeld. The Blue Bulls took early command of the match and never looked back.

Three tries in the first 20 minutes laid the foundation to the bonus-point win. The EP Kings came back well in the second half of the match, but after that early blow there was only going to be one winner in the match.

A rash of substitutions on both sides affected the momentum of both teams and the Blue Bulls only managed the bonus point try nine minutes from time.

Scorers:

Blue Bulls 27 (24). Tries: Tries: Jurie Linde (2), Philip Orffer, RG Snyman. Conversions: Dewald Human (3). Penalty: Human
EP Kings 17 (10). Tries: CJ Velleman, Tyler Paul. Conversions: Jason Vers, Tyler Paul. Penalty: Vers

KZN 32 (13), Leopards 17 (5)

The home side had to work hard to overcome their visitors from Potchefstroom, but in the end won with a flattering margin. They also secured the bonus point in a strong second half when Matthew Reece-Edwards scored his second try of the half.

Another familiar rugby surname, Du Preez, got onto the scoresheet when Jean-Luc, son of former Bok Robert du Preez, scored.

Scorers:

KZN 32 (13). Tries: Ayron Schramm, Jean-Luc du Preez, Matthew Reece-Edwards (2).Conversions: Innocent Radebe (3). Penalties: Radebe (2).
Leopards 17(5). Tries: Gideon van der Merwe, Rudolph Van Deventer, Wessels Kuhn. Conversion: Chris Arries.

@Bull23: Stem saam Ryno Eksteen is FLIPPIN goed. Handre se algemene spel is volgens my beter. Sy skopwerk maak in my opinie die verskil.

In 2012 se wedstryd Affies @ Paarl Gim asook WP vs Bulle by cravenweek was Ryno beslis beter as Pollard. In my opinie is Ryno baie goed en hoop ek hy skud die beserings af.WP kan sy aanvallende spel op10 baie goed gebruik.

@vatikaki: Nothing wrong with Coleman Sir, the glaring problems are at 9 (yes both!), have been at 9 and looks to remain at 9. We may have a flicker of light in the junior structures, but will have to find a stop-gap, soon, very very soon.

But that would suck for him. I had a burst appendix around the same age and it’s the most excruciating intense pain I think I will ever feel. Would’ve loved to have said I cried but it hurt too much for that. It’s then followed by 5 days lying in the hospital

    @RBugger:

Think Pollard made it pretty clear that he intends to play for only one SA team, and that is the Bulls. Unfortunate but maybe he can even lead them to change their approach/game plan.

    @BoishaaiPa:

Eish I don’t think we’d survive with 2 such small wingers. Need some size!

Also I thought Kobus van Wyk had an excellent first season and would pick him ahead of Patrick Howard any day.

And Robert du Preez was an excellent addition. Better then Coleman/Grant/Catrakilis.

@Woltrui: One player unfortunatly doesn’t make a whole backline Wolle!…Good as he is, he still has to play with one dimensional bull centres!..With all the backline talent being nurtured in WP at the moment the future looks bright…The forwards is looking even better!

@BoishaaiPa: Deadly backline that – Look out though for the guy who came on this weekend at outside centre – can’t remember his name, maybe Oosthuizen from Paarl Gim. I know he injured himself badly last year, but when he came on this past Saturday, he looked powerful and very promising

    @RBugger: @BoishaaiPa:

Not helping matters is that centre Daniel du Plessis’s middle name is Michael and hooker Daniel has Mills for a second name so both DM du Plessis.

Perhaps we need to revert to the WP 1980’s days – Schalk Burger and Schalk Burger Junior

@BoishaaiPa: Look, both played well, the hooker is a great player and likes the physical exchanges. But I am referring to the inside centre, 12. Believe me when I tell you, this boy is the real deal.

He can do it all, he has explosive strength, fantastic vision and huge amounts of gas off the mark – I could go on and on, this kid is just exceptional, that good that he looked like he should not have been on that field!

@scrummie: Yeah good to hear that both both Velleman and Human are continuing from where they left off at 1st XV school level last year – both were outstanding in 2013. Velleman known for his turnover technique and very unlucky not to have been picked for SA Schools while Human did make SA Schools as an x-factor ball in hand attacker.

For rugby after school both have been labelled as being a bit on the small side. In SA there isn’t that great an appreciation for a turnover specialist with bigger ball-carrier 6’s preferred. The Bulls had an SA Schools 6 a few years back who was excellent at the breakdown but he was overlooked after u21 and now plays rugby for the Griquas – Marnus Schoeman. As for Human his ability to kick out of hand and tackle when required are bound to be put to the test, aspects that will possibly determine his longevity in the sport.

If the Bulls are looking for a replacement/back-up for Steggies then CJ Velleman is the man for sure I have no doubt.

@Bull23 : Dewald Human by far Bulls best player, just hope his size does not count against him later on. Jurie Linde started like a house on fire he was everywhere but he faded away as the match went on which is bit sad but he surely will be playing snr rugby soon so watch out jj and william small-smith etc. Ivan v Zyl also had a good game, was lively and had good service. Locks were okayish without doing any harm actually, Johan v Wyk that came on second half was impressive he scrummed well and made few big hits, he must start in next game.

    @burra:

Kerron van Vuuren – Lions (bye week)
Banele Ngwenya – Lions as well I think. Will see if he plays next weekend.
Roy Jordan Meaker – At the Sharks, didn’t make match-day squad.

A weak KZN Craven Week side definitely doesn’t demand they all start somewhere.

Now if it was a Western Province CW player who is nowhere to be found, it should raise alarms :D

    Louis Grey – Potchefstroom Gymnasium
Walt Steenkamp – Rustenburg High School
Rudolph van Deventer – Sasolburg Hoërskool

Will try find Thys & Julian Joubert later (will take a while) but neither of them ended up being in the 23 anyway.

    – Farrel Kelly moved into the starting line-up at loosehead, with the loosehead switching to tighthead and Morne Strydom coming in as the reserve prop in jersey 17.
    – Hendrik Joubert was in the 6 jersey instead of Donavan van der Berg.
    – Tiaan Bezuidenhout in the 19 jersey instead of Thys Joubert.
    – Julian Delicado in the 20 jersey instead of Julian Joubert.

@scrummie: To me this 29-17 result is the equivalent of a win for the EP Kings.I have watched Velleman, Jaer, Nieuwoudt (esp good at CW in 2012) and Manjezi before. Unfortunately Manjezi did not bring his best form to CW 2013 but along with the others offers quite a bit of promise. The player I don’t think I’ve seen play and who is highly rated is the flank Tyler Paul. It sounds like he will be on the shopping lists of a few provinces with interest already being shown by Free State.

@RBugger: Just a personal opinion. He had a big reputation while at school – played 1st XV from u16. I watched him a few times at school level and always felt the hype exceeded the ability shown in the performances. Yesterday was for me the best I’d seen him play and he really stood out. He really mixed it up well and as you mention he is definitely not afraid of the physical stuff

@Beet: Jan van der Merwe correctly reported in team list as Pretoria Boys HS. Vatikaki knows his Bulls schoolboys, as hierdie Jan played hooker for Candies in 2013. A fine player unlucky not to be given bulls school honours – missed out during trials due to injury I belief.

@Beet: just arrived home after a long session in the False Bay bar as a result of a blady red card!!! Anyway, Radebe is a great player, why did you feel he was overrated? Personally, I feel he controls a game very well and does not shy away from contact. All in all, a very all rounded fly half…..?

EP can feel very happy with their performance. Stand out players : 5, 6, 7, 12, 15 …, 10 also showed he has some potential. Especially EP num 6 CJ Velleman was BRILLIAT, strong on defence and kept Bulls defenders very busy on attack, short boy but powerfully built, surely he is gonna play higher up for EP pretty soon.

@Muzi – where was this Xander guy before he arrived at Bulls ???, cause whats happening at snrs is shocking like you also mentioned earlier. Hopefully De Beer stays at Bulls otherwise WP is going to have best 9/10/15 at jnr level : 9 Justin Phillips 10 Tinus de Beer 15 EW Viljoen.

@beet: I hope Johan has grown a bit – I saw him during the December holidays in Hermanus and he was quite a bit shorter than his brother.

If I remember correctly the tall lock wasn’t a regular starter in his school’s first team (I’m not sure if it was Potch Gim perhaps). I know the Leopards were looking for some tall timber and decided to pick him.

Watched the Sharks juniors today. The player that impressed me most was Innocent Radebe – mostly because I thought he was overrated before today but he really showed he belonged today. In the second half Schramm and du Preez really came to life. Johan du Toit who is Pieter-Steph’s brother has lots of heart. I thought Reece-Edwards had a shaky start but overall had a really good match – this was sort of like the Sharks. Bad start and looked like a team that one could see taking 40 from Free State. Eventually clicked and had some nice passages of continuity.

The Leopards lock Louis Grey is a giant and must stand around 2.10m. His partner Walt Steenkamp not small either but more bulk and more effective. The Leopards pack was good but they didn’t have the quality in their backline this time around.

Useless bit of info: the Sharks hooker Wesley White is the son of a well known coach.

@Muzi: I know these two kids well, Jinx since Gr1, but he was trying too hard to get bigger.

Tend to agree on Adrian. When I say he is good, I mean as a person. I wish he would be more serious about pursuing an academic career.

Anyway, I see they won. RG’s granddad kept me updated untill half time. Were you at the game?

@RBugger: I couldn’t reply earlier – sorry about that. The crop of guys moving up from U/19 were not a good group of players as you may recall from last year’s performances (or lack thereof). They have lost quite a few players yes and therefore the need to use some of the “youngster”.

I guess Robert is training with the Currie Cup group – I certainly hope so !!

As Muzi has also mentioned, Vermeulen and JD will certainly be missed.

@Muzi: Agree with you Muzi. The Bulls has got a good team. The Bulls and WP will be the teams to beat. The Charkies and Cheetahs could be the dark horses. The Charkies has a formidable pack. I see some of the Cheetahs U/19 players is also playing u/21 (Daniel Maartins the Nellies 6-imo the best schoolboy 6 in 2013. F#&*#@n Mr Tredoux for nicking him. The kid should have been a Bull  ).

That is a very good start against a traditionally strong young Leopards side.

Looking forward to the return of Dan Du Preez and Andrew Du Plessis, great start

@Muzi: Muzi I rate mr de Beer very highly as a schoolboy flyhalf BUT, and I hope I am wrong, not as a S15 or higher. He is a general in the mould of a Naas Botha but I do not think even Naas would have been a factor in the modern game. But hey what do I know.

@Muzi: And the biggest clown Werner with the juniors. But as I am not a Bulls supporter I enjoy this. The Bulls management remind me of the old Saambou Bank board of directors. And we all know what happened there.

As soon as Xander became the high performance manager at the Bulls, player acquisition has become a circus..especially in the senior side..he’s out of his depth…it would best for the bulls if he gets fired OR gets demoted just as a schoolboy scout…rant over. :-|

Adrian Maebane is a talented player it’s just that I’m not sure if he can go all the way at the Bulls and play CC and super rugby…we had a similar situation with Andile Jho..Schoeman is a quality player.

@vatikaki: Is this then a case of Affies poaching players after school just to look impressive or is it a question of the honourable Beet dropping the ball again.

There is a Jan van der Merwe at Affies as well, but he plays in the backs.

This one is the reserve hooker.

@Muzi: Has Jinx lost some weight? His conditioning last year suggested he was aiming for the front row!

I see you don’t rate Adrian Maebane. Good boy that, I hope you guys look after him well.

@Muzi: Is Jan vd Merwe the Affies boy currently in GR12.
Secondly glad to see Morne v Staden getting a chance at the Cheetahs. He played last year in the shadow of Eduan Keyter. Point I want to make talented boy not contracted but getting good exposure at the Cheetahs

@BuffelsCM: I see – I know they were blady good last year (winners) were a lot of the guys U21?

One more thing, I do not see Rob Du Preez in the U21 side? Do you perhaps know why?

The U19 side still look very very strong, but JD AND Vermeulen would make a big difference to the side

@RBugger: I think it is because of a lack of depth in the U/21 side that they are using Vermeulen etc.

@Scrummie: EW Viljoen is injured but will more than likely play for the U21 side. Province were certainly one of the favourites going into the season, but they are playing their star u19 in the u21 side – Vermeulen, Schickerling, Viljoen.

The other Unions seem to be keeping the U19 sides together – this could count against Province this season
