    #19 PASSIONATE ABOUT RUGBY

“PIONEERS IN TESTING THEMSELVES AGAINST THE BEST.”

@Grasshopper Maritzburg College started full blown exchanges with “the best” in the form of Grey College and Affies in the 1990’s, long before Glenwood put their 1st team “out there.” Very sad to see how once the money dried up the unsustainable program has not been maintained in any shape or form. KZN needs a strong Glenwood and hopefully they will rise up again.

@Grasshopper Sadly the current so called “successful” KZN schools teams are littered with a plethora of ineligible Under 19 players so it begs the question as to exactly how well they will do at the 2026 Craven Week. We may well see a repetition of their poor performance at the 2025 Craven Week.

@Boereworsgordyn (Comment #16) I don’t think the KZN team expected to be in the Top 10 or even deserve Top 10, but they have definitely shown to be Top 30 or even Top 20 level, 4 or 5 of those teams too which is higher than historically. I think you will find KZN will be near the top in the Craven Week if they select properly. I mean Northwood coming within a few points of Boishaai was unheard of 20 years ago….Glenwood was the pioneer in testing themselves vs the best. I would think Glenwood was probably the first KZN school at WildeKlawer and Noord/Suid, now others have taken on the baton…..

KZN teams’ struggles at WK don’t come out of nowhere. Their high rankings were always going to be tested against broader, tougher opposition outside KZN — and that’s exactly what’s happening. A few weeks ago 3 teams were in T10. It doesn’t mean the teams are weak; it just shows that rankings based on a smaller or less diverse pool of opposition don’t always translate when the level steps up. Still believe however that 2-3 of them belong in T20 but not T10. Affies also busy with a comeback! Affies, Outeniqua, Waterkloof, Monnas, and Oakdale likely to move up in rankings…
    Any other observations?

Absoluut. Daarom: alle spanne speel teen ‘n baie gelykwaardige opponent (bv Gim vs Grey of Waterkloof vs Boland, of Paul Roos vs Garsfontein of Helpmeaar vs Outeniqua), die sterk skole speel teen ‘n sg “makliker” opponent, (bv Grey vs Noordheuwel of Gim vs Helpmekaar), en die minder sterk skole speel teen ‘n sg “sterk” opponent, bv (Noordheuwel vs Grey of Helpmekaar vs Gim)

My twee sent.

The traditional fixtures are increasing by the day. Gim/Affies, Paul Roos/Affies, Grey/ Gim, etc. We already have Grey /Paul Roos, Paarl Boys/ Grey, Paul Roos/Grey PE, Grey/Affies, etc. It has become impossible to set up decent fixtures for the various festivals. Paul Roos/Monument, Affies/Paarl Boys, Garsfontein/Paul Roos, Grey/Garsfontein, Stellenberg/Grey or Garsfontein – that is about that. Perhaps the schools are playing too much rugby. Wildeklawer is there since 2009. N/S the latest addition. What about a classic end of season rugby day, as we have had in the past, with the 20 leading schools involved, replacing North/South? Then N/S then not a festival, but only a one day event.

King Edwards are still going to Grey as they have not been affected. But I believe that PBHS have had to withdraw from the Grey festival.

PBHS is experiencing a number of cases with flu-like symptoms and also measles, so this weekend’s fixture with KES has been cancelled.

I presume that the PBHS and KES 1st teams will still travel to Grey for the games on Monday…but maybe not?

@Roger (Comment #1) Looking at the entire picture, I’m not sure I like how this all plays out. I’d imagine both KES and Pretoria Boys (probably together even) will fly on the Sunday after breakfast down to PE to play Rondebosch and Grey High respectively on the Monday. Rondebosch will have played Glenwood already in PE obviously on the Saturday in a game they may not need to break a sweat in, they’ll have a feel for the festival, kickers have a feel for the poles and players the Gqeberha air … If the KES – Boys High game is a high octane one, this isn’t going to end well in opinion. Maybe I’m old fashioned and overthinking it way too much, it is just a game of rugby at the end of the day lol

shew, KES playing Boys High on Saturday and Rondebosch at Grey PE on Monday – hope their injury situation has improved ‘cos this is shaping up as a carbon copy of the 2025 season – Brent can confirm, but I heard 7 of the starting XV were out against Noorheuwel! Crazy if true!
