The 2019 Schoolboy Rugby Season

Hi all

The 2019 regular season is past tense!

I thought for a change it would be nice to document the 50 or so most season defining events/matches/characters of 2019. It would therefore include results on the field and things that happened off it as well and can even extend to the comments made here by specific bloggers. I have attached the results that I recorded for 2019 in a PDF file to help the memory bank along.

2019 SBR Results

If anyone is interested in making a contribution via comment or email (beet@schoolboyrugby.co.za) please do. I will blog the data below.

# HEADING DETAILS
1 Affies Their most difficult year since 2014. In spite of there being so much on the line for the Witbulle from Pretoria as one of just a handful of national SBR powerhouses, the positive of this was the old school honour: Affies backed their own boys in an age where other schools are going out all out to recruit their way out of having a “bad year”.
2 Ben Vorster Vossies claimed the Virsekerbeker Plate title in 2019. One of their star players u17 Renzo du Plessis, who capped a memorable season by earning Green and Gold colours also scored awesome try at Craven Week that went viral online.
3 Bishops The young talented Bishops team claimed the unofficial Southern Suburbs title for the first time since 2011, winning the only proper Triple Crown in the process.
4 Blogger of the Year Hopefully the concensus is someone interesting and entertaining.
5 Blugger of the Year A combo of the words blogger and bugger – the votes are still being tallied :-)
6 Craven Week CW still represents something of huge value to schoolboys from all different walks of life. There needs to be a measure of respect for this. At the same time it’s no excuse for wearing blinkers. Realise the potential this youth week has to be something great and take cognance of the underlying factors that potentially stand in it’s way of improving.
7 Despatch Beat Brandwag for the first time since 1995. Despatch also went unbeaten in the EP league matches in 2019
8 Durbanville The Cape Town Northern suburbs school has been increasing it’s profile in recent years and really seem to have an uphill battle on their hands keeping their star players away from the poachers. Everything else they did achieved this season was overshadowed right at the end by well-handled news of Durbies parting ways with their head coach. Durbies ended the season on a high by beating neighbours Stellenberg in the annual main interschools derby and the way the world works, this was probably the first time that the outcome enjoyed as much of interest from neutrals.
9 Eldoraigne Perhaps a bit of a head-scratcher is how did they get relegated from the VB Plate or maybe not?
10 Framesby A hugely successful season for day school Framesby from PE. Their conquests included beating the two Virsekerbeker Cup finalists as well as both of the SWD’s heavyweights during 2019.
11 Grey College The Navy Blues completed a second undefeated season in succession to once again be crowned SA’s top rugby school. In doing so they go through the 1000-day unbeaten barrier. Grey College conditioning has always set the bar very high but something about 2019 that should not be allowed to be lost in the archives in years to come, is how this 2019 team dominated second halves in terms of scoring points.
12 Grey HS Their best season since 2008.
13 HJS Paarl BH The arrival of boys with sporting ability from several other high schools was a theme which saw both Wynberg and SACS suspend sporting relationships with Boishaai. On the field of play a decent year for Boishaai under a brand new head coach.
14 Hugenote (Springs) Crowded champs of the Virsekerbeker Shield
15 KES Recorded their first ever win against Affies
16 Marais Viljoen One of the surprises that might only really sink in come 2020 is that Marais Viljoen have been promoted to the big times of the Noordvaal co-ed premier league aka the Virsekerbeker Cup.
17 Menlopark Possibly the biggest form U-turn story of 2019. A less than satisfactory season based on the huge promise the Parkies team has shown coming up through the age-groups seemed to be heading towards a miserable finish after Menlo had suffered a crucial defeat to EG. Whatever was said and done after that is worth writing about because after that it seemed like nothing could stand in the way of Menlopark capturing the maiden Virsekerbeker Cup title.
18 Noordheuwel Favourites to be relegated after their surprising promotion to the Virsekerbeker top tier in 2019, Nories surprised many by finishing third from the bottom overall. Their most memorable game was a televised match that had the attendance and atmosphere of a true traditional derby, and the Nories 1st XV did not disappoint in going down to their esteemed Krugersdorp neighbours – the Monnas Witbulle.
19 Northwood The Knights from Durban North made history by beating Maritzburg College for the first time and doing it on Goldstones in Pietermaritzburg as well. Northwood’s memorable season also included KZN interschools wins against DHS, Kearsney, Michaelhouse, St Charles and Westville.
20 Paarl Gim As part of an outstanding season which saw them claim second place nationally, Gimmies broke their Paarl Interskole drought by beating late charging Boishaai by a single point after the last Boishaai conversion kick of the match was missed.
21 Paul Roos The Maroon Machine won the SANIX in Japan. Injuries to key backline players along with a fixture schedule start that just didn’t allow them to get up to competitive top form and this kind of defined the campaign in the end.
22 SA Schools The SA School performances in the International Series were an improvement on the last couple of years. Thanks to Argentina stepping in the void left by Italy, an SA Schools “B” team also participated again and held their head high.
23 Schoolboys heading to France Kade Wolhuter, the Paul Roos flyhalf became the most well-known SBR player in 2019 due to his signing a contract with a French club and being omitted from the SA Schools team as a result.
24 St Andrew’s A 100% homegrown SAC team (all 1st XV players at the school since grade-8) had a stellar season, losing just two matches and scoring a record number of tries. Their 2nd XV was unbeaten.
25 Virsekerbeker A double-thumbs up competition. Thank you Virseker the insurance company that sponsors it. Hopefully you reap the rewards. Two negatives that did come up towards the end of the season – 1. the decision to hold the playoff matches of the Cup while top players were representing their country; 2. the venue determination for the finals which certainly required the availability of several fields but did raise questions.
26 Welkom Gim The Central region’s second best team after Grey College won the Kovsie Liga.
27 Wildeklawer It turned out to be an outstanding package.
28 WSF The less said about it the better. It took a big step backwards. Poor attendances, pay-per-view broadcasting, one sided matches…at least the beer wasn’t warm!!!

@Mr.

Hier is my 2 sent.

@Wonder: ‘n Rugby direkteur is in my opinie baie belangrik…

‘n top direkteur is beslis nodig!

It is interesting that the 2 teams without so called stars made it through to the finals(with Griquas also in the semis). Yes I know the Springboks did not play, but teams such as the Bulls, Sharks and Province had so many Boks in their teams left, one would have expected at least one of them would make the finals.

@Strepie: Hi, as stated previously, I don’t support a specific school as I was not in matric in SA. I do however love SBR, no matter where in SA.
I must say I am not used to the disrespect shown by some bloggers. And that is why I said the english bloggers are in a class of their own as they might disagree, but mostly they respect each other.
Some of the afrikaans bloggers, especially those wearing your school’s shirt, are just plain mean people – they seem to find joy by humiliating others. Maybe you can tell me why that is!

@boerboel: If I were you I would be very very careful with the choice of words – referring to your post to @Strepie:
I have read up on Chris Hart following your comments and could not find any guilty verdict on racism.
What I did find was that his twin brother was murdered after he had given a black friend a ride. Does not seem like a racist family.
The rand is not my field of expertise. It seems to be yours, so what is your prediction.

Also from a slightly biased perspective
    1) The Westville ” 2nd” team hooker making the SA B team and ending up one of the top try scorers
    2) Westville becoming the first KZN side in history to beat Affies in Pretoria
(And to come back from the deficit they did showed true character) It bodes well for 2020 and they must aim for a top 10 position.

I will also say this. You are clearly not part of the cognoscenti, as I have never seen you posting anything that adds value to SBR, which if fact makes you a liability to SBR.

My own, slightly biased, season defining moment:The Candies beating Affies for the first time in 11 years, coupled with Paul Anthony’s return to Boys High.
Negatives – Reluctance by SOME Affies parents/supporters to give any credit to Boys High for the win
Positives – The way in which the Affies players ( or those who I had interactions with) reacted to the loss and gave credit where credit was due – no excuses

@Vyfster: Final ranking only 4 out of the Top 10 co-ed and 3 of them have been there for some time while Gim and Monnas have always been in top 5 at some stage. Only real rise is Helpies with Framesby and Stellies always being on the radar of top 20. It Ebbs and Flows. Top Co-Eds have always been Gim, Monnas and Outeniqua and of late Garsies and Helpies. The rest will have one decent season and then fall away again to pop up again a season or two later. Consistency is much more difficult to achieve and maintain over a 10 year period unless you have a very good program in place like Garsies or Helpies has shown of late, with the likes of Stellies also now coming through..Menlo seems to get things in place at junior level and then it falls away at u/19 leve only to surprize in some games again…consistency again the problem it seems. I don’t think one can therefore come to the conclusion that there is real change coming as the top contenders have always been there, with one or two spikes over years.

Another interesting tendens this year…..the rise of the co-eds.

Last BHP rankings shows 6 of the top 10 co-eds.
Final rankings might see Stellies and Helpies falling out of top 10 after losses against Durbanville and Menlo ( which are also co-eds)

But currently 6 of top 10 impressive.
Both last year’s final rankings, as well as the last 5 year ranking, shows only 3 co-eds amongst top 10.
Flash in the pan, or sign of real change?

Boishaai’s “delayed option” explanation ? following some school’s withdrawal.
Northvaal and Virseker’s decision to dilute the Virsekerbeker.
The 3 Boishaaiers who “crucified” the Free State Cravenweek prop – breaking all the blog rules.
    The Malhuis post.
Chronicle’s posts which revealed how some afrikaans school supporters bad mouthed other schools.
Every new blogger – who starts his/her first post about recruitment/poaching ?.
Bloulou’s post accusing Garsies of recruiting 2 Oos-Moot boys when they in fact went to his school Waterkloof.
Waterkloof returning to Virseker following the appointment of a new school principal, exposing all Waterkloof’s previous reasons/lies for withdrawing against Garsies.
The way Carinat “stole” the world schools festival from Boishaai.

-Welkom Gim 10 migreer na Grey
-Bellville o19 14 migreer na Welkom Gim

Beet, firstly congratulations on a great website and an original idea to keep discourse going after the end of the schoolboy rugby season.

You are all familiar with the “Newsmaker of the Year”-award that is on an annual basis named by the National Press Club. This award has nothing to do with being the greatest individual, event or institution in a specific year. To para-phrase – it has to do with someone/somebody creating “news value” (blog interest?), be it for all the right or wrong reasons. On the positive side, past winners included Charlize Theron, the Springboks, the South African rhino and Nelson Mandela. On the negative side, it included Jacob Zuma(x3!), ESKOM, Julius Malema and Oscar Pistorius.

Beet, for purposes of your specific post, I would suggest ” A defining post” – one that either speaks of extraordinary perspicacity or one that speaks of a shocking/upsetting lack of insight to what is appropriate.

I have got me own ideas in the aforesaid regard but would like to hear the opinion of other bloggers regarding the post that they perhaps read more than once to comprehend and pondered upon after reading the same, be it because they agreed or were boiling.

On this website there are many bloggers with strong opinions. Some have considered opinions and some may simply be opiniated. Be that as it may, I would like to hear what bloggers like @Boishaaipa, @Cronicle, @Ploegskaar, @Deon, @Vyfster, @Djou, @Murrayfield, @Tzavosky, @Grizzly, @Strepie, @PaarlBok, @Boerboel(“provocateur per excellence”) and of course @Smallies(“Fifty Shades of Grey”) has to say. (I didn’t do an empirical study of the customary contributors and might have skipped a regular blogger or two.)

Bloggers, I look forward to your response – if any!

P.S. I will put in my two cents worth in due course.

RUGBY IS KONING!

Ek bedoel die bogenoemde met grootste respek so moet nou nie my kop afbyt nie. Net n voorstel.

Groot skuiwe by PRG oppad hoor ek. Paar ongelukkige manne.

Northwood beating Maritzburg College (and on Goldstones), for the first time in the schools history was something special. It also set the tone for a great season that saw them claim victories over other KZN rivals DHS, Westville, Michaelhouse, St Charles and Kearsney (in a televised match on Old Boys Day).

The attitude of our SBR-players week in and week out are commendable! The hard work and discipline are evident. Well done to them!!

Grey Bloem and their unbeaten season: one can only concur with Beet “Amazing Greys”. At least Menlo was ahead against Grey halftime … possibly the only team!?

Gim deserving winners of the Paarl Interskole.

    Boys High victorious over Affies.

Virsekerbeker going from strength to strength and the vibrant competition at all divisions.
    All the Virsekerbeker champions!!

    Closer to home:
Menlo winning their first 0/19 game at Wildeklawer.

The character Menlo showed by turning their season around to become first time Virsekerbeker champions. In the process also beating Monnas for the first time.

    Positief

    2. Menlo se wen in VirSekerbeker was uitstekend.
3.Grey Bloem MOET die beste rugbyskool in die Wereld wees.
    4. Die Kapenaars lyk vredeliefend maar hou EINTLIK nie baie van mekaar nie!

    @Smallies: @Grizzly:

I will remember the 2019 season for

A next level Grey college team….new benchmark for excellence set.

Menlo’s last 3 games, that ended a 56 year wait to win their first trophy as North Vaal kings

The brilliant individual tries by Renzo du Plessis of BV ( playing for Limpopo Bulls against Griquas at CW, and Franco Knoetze for GCB against PR.
    Renzo’s try viewed 150 000 times in 3 days…unheard of.

The surprises , kudos for Pretoria Boys high against Affies, and Durbanville against Stellenberg

Special mention for Hugenote Springs winning VB shield final 57-34 against Middelburg
Last years league game , they lost 102-3 against Ben Vorster.
What a remarkable turnaround in one year!

Of course I am biased, but the most watchable game this year imo, was Ben Vorster’s 49-46 win over Dale at KES Easter festival….that game had everything and then some.
It was also a season defining game for BV…..setting the tone for a string of narrow victories as newly promoted newbies in VB plate…..culminating in winning the trophy 37-36 against Eldoraigne in final

The performance of Framesby and St Andrews…..great season to both.

Last but not least….I think if anyone sees FC du Plessis, we better call him “ meneer”, just to be on the safe side. If his dad name himself Malhuis, you can’t be too careful.
Definite post of the year by Malhuis

@Smallies: No use arguing with @boerboel:. Just ignore him. He succeeds in making Boishaai’s name GAT.
You know something is wrong with a person when he knows what he is doing is wrong and will discredit his school, but just can’t help himself doing it.
When the urge to belittle exceeds common sense, then such person suffers from some sort of disorder.

Boishaai kerm as seuns na ander skole toe gaan, maar skerm as seuns van ander skole na Boishaai toe gaan.
Huge double standards and you are becoming more and more disbelieving by the day.
First it was Stier, followed by boerboel and now you.
Why don’t you just own up to it?

Dalk bietjie minder posetief vir my was die World of Schools?

@boerboel: Surely one of the major rugby events of the year was when Province hammered the Free State. Also when a school from the Free State hammered the best of the best schools in the Province. And then of course the Free State who made a comeback against Province Saturday. Never a dull moment.

N skool kind is reeds n profesionele student.

    5. Rugby is 10 keer harder as toe ons seuns was.

    6. My wild card team vir 2020 is Outeniqua. Hou hulle dop volgende jaar. Hier kom paar groot verrassings.

Garsies se ses SA skole spelers is n Groot prestasie gewees
Grey se hele seisoen was n groot prestasie
PRG se faluire to launche op plaaslike bodem was n teleurstelling
