Final : Welkom Gim 62 Goudveld 7
Welkom’s two big guns Hoërskool Goudveld and Welkom Gimnasium will bring the curtain down on the 2019 schoolboy rugby season when they square off in the Kovsie Liga 1st XV final on 24 August at the Free State University in Bloemfontein.
The two rivals met a few weeks back in the Griffons Liga final, where Goudies surprised many by holding the strong Gimmies team to a 22-22 draw in the 70-minutes of action. Since that match was the curtain-raiser for the senior Griffons’ team match, there was no time provided for extra-time to decide the winner and in accordance with the rules, Gimmies were awarded the title as a result of scoring the first try of the match. It goes without saying that this did not go down too well with the Goudies support base.
An almost gale force wind blew that day which negated the strong point of Welkom Gimnasium – being their slick handling and long passes. Goudveld’s has got a good pack of forwards so their supporters believe that their team can make history this weekend
The wind won’t be a factor this Saturday. The match promises to provide a thrilling close to a full programme that will feature several schools in different categories and age-groups competing for honours.
@Herakles: Baie geluk aan gimmies ,julle het regtig op gepitch vandag
@Herakles: I actually thought Goudveld was very lucky in the previous game. Gimmies way too strong.
Welkom Gimnasium 62 – Goudveld 7
I did not see that coming….
Beet, thanks for the post.
I am sure the game will be very exciting. Goudveld could last win a game against Welkom Gimnasium in 2014 but have they drawn the last game which was played a couple of weeks ago.
In the two games they have already played this year, the one lock of Goudveld (Rian Olivier I think) has been a thorn in the flesh of Welkom Gimnasium. He is a quick and strong runner and often score long distance tries – sometimes against the run of play. I am sure Gim will give him their undivided attention!
For Gim their SA School number eight, Keke Morabe, will be their key man. Yr.no predicts a gentle breeze of 3m/s (not typical in this part of the country in August!) in Bloemfontein on Saturday afternoon. This will play into the hands of Gim as they like to play the ball wide.
Do you know whether the game will be shown on DigiTV?
