WPRU puts the brakes on Paul Roos’s squad system

Leading rugby schools in Western Province were summoned to attend a meeting at headquarters earlier this week, where they were told that the use of the squad system which involves using fresh reserves off the bench for 1st XV inter-schools matches, would no longer be permitted. Paul Roos went about their business of rotating a squad of  23 players in a very professional rugby like manner on certain match days during 2014.

Saturday 16 May sees two of the region’s big guns Paul Roos and Paarl Gymnasium locking horns. The Maroon Machine was recently crowned Sanix champions at the international annual event in Japan, while Gimmies gave a clear indication of their form by recording a somewhat surprising 39-0 win against Boland Landbou at the Farm last Saturday. Last year’s derby winners Paul Roos are the home team and favourites. The Stellenbosch team last won two in a row against the Bloedworse in 2005/06. The match will be televised at 12h15.

Interesting, noticed Paul Roos subbed scrummie and lock on Saturday with players that did not play for 2nd team. Semi squad system approved by WP schools?

Yeah I tried to bring it up as a topic many years ago but when Brendan Venter ran a squad system at Paul Roos. It seemed like a couple of SS4 schools at the time were not opposed to having 3 or 4 returning players as fresh reserves.
Grey College also played the squad system often in those times.

10 years ago – have a look at some of those names.
Heard a murmur that some Southern Suburb teams have a squad system?

11-7 to Gim at halftime. A sloppy game. Many poor passes and tactic kicks which are being allowed to bounce. Loving Gim no 6 Johan Visser.

So glad to see that some sanity has prevailed in school boy rugby.
