Here are the final rankings for 2015 as presented by BHP. For the last couple of week provisional rankings were used.

The BHP scoring system works as follows:

Win : the full category points of the opponent
Win Bonus: 0.5 points for a win by a score of 30 points or more.
Loss: no points for a loss.
Loss Bonus for losing by less than 6 points: 60% of opponent’s category points
Loss Bonus for losing by less than 11 points: 40% of opponent’s category points
Loss Deduction: a deduction of 0.5 for a loss to a school in a lower category
Draw: 80% of opponent’s category points…

NB NOTE from BHP: Having looked at all the results and what our sliding scale produced in ranking outcomes, I have standardised the formula on the following:

1. For a loss of 5 points or less – 70% of Opponents Category Points.
2. For a loss of between 6 and 10 points – 40% of Opponents Category Points.
3. Draw gives you 80% of Opponents Category points.

BHP has come up with a new concept which could work (or not). He divided the schools into “Leagues” based on their category points (category points are based on previous years performances).…

Herewith the first BHP rankings after the Easter Weekend festivals. Please note that teams had to play 5 or more games to be considered, therefore teams like Paarl Gim, Boland Landbou, Bishops etc will only appear on the rankings once they have played 5 or more games.…

Here is the combined effect of 6 such website’s rankings. Points have been allocated on the basis of 20 for 1st, 19 for 2nd, etc, etc. while the remaining few teams are from those who were ranked best outside the Top 20.…

Before finalising the 2014 formula driven rankings, BHP has asked if bloggers can check if all their schools’s games are in the “played” category below. Some early season friendlies and shortened games are not taken into account and neither are any games played overseas on tours. Once I have updated all the data of outstanding games he will bring out the final rankings but doubt if it will change the top 20 anyway. Email: [email protected]…

Word from BHP: It has occurred to me after chatting with a few SBR followers that they see the rankings as a relative strength measure of teams, which it not really is. The ranking system is there to measure how you are doing this season relatively compared to other teams.…

Formula driven rankings compiled by BoishaaiPa: “I am tweaking my formulas a bit to get a better result on real strength. I am looking to give teams that play quality opposition, but lose with close margins more bonuspoints. This will ensure that teams we know are strong, but have lost a few due to the strong opposition they have played don’t dwell down inbetween 40 and 50″…

Unbeaten schools Grey College, Garsfontein, Wynberg and Glenwood top the first official BHP rankings of 2014. Only schools playing a minimum of 6 games were considered.…

There is just one more week of SBR left in 2013 and as mentioned before the Outeniqua – Grey College battle for third place is as tight as ever. The Kwaggas play Paarl Gim in a Western Cape season ending Burger Trophy final. It is tough at the top. Nelspruit in the congestion and considered a contender for the national 5th place just a week back, drop out of the Top 10 following their defeat to EG Jansen in the Beeld semi . After a promising start to 2013, Rondebosch drops out of the Top 30 altogether, after their defeat at the hands of Bishops.  …

The battle for third spot is hotting up. Grey College has closed the gap to Outeniqua from 0.19 average points per game before the weekend to just 0.07. This leaves the Kwaggas with virtually no room for error during their remaining games which will presumably be Marlow followed by Paarl Gim. Even an Outeniqua win against Marlow might see their lead over Grey Bloem reduced even further, meaning that the school from George might have to beat Gimmies just to hold onto third spot for 2013. Interesting weeks ahead. Elsewhere it’s EG Jansen and Nelspruit who will battle it out for fifth place via the Beeld Trofee semi-final and with it a chance to meet surprise package Kempton Park in this year’s cup final.…
