Wynberg chase the Southern Suburbs grand slam on the road

Wynberg have already conquered the Southern Suburbs once this season.

Now they have to survive them.

On Saturday, 15 August 2026, Wynberg travel to Tienie Heyns for a mouthwatering Southern Suburbs derby against Rondebosch, knowing that victory would take them another step closer to something considerably more valuable than another win: a clean sweep of their biggest local rivals.

The Triple Crown is already safely in the bag. Now Wynberg are chasing the grand slam.

Two away fixtures stand between them and a remarkable piece of local bragging rights — Rondebosch on Saturday, followed by the traditional season finale against SACS.

On paper, both are winnable.

That is precisely what makes them dangerous.

Because Rondebosch and SACS have arrived at the business end of the season with their tails up and both are blooding teams for 2027 success.

Both have impressed during the third term, but Rondebosch are the only one of the two to have landed a knockout blow against a local rival, beating SACS 36-30 in a thriller.

More significantly, both have shown that they can trouble the very best from the Winelands.

Rondebosch pushed Paarl Gim for 35 minutes at Jan Kriel before South Africa’s top-ranked school of 2026 eventually pulled away in the second half to win 52-24. The scoreline suggests a comfortable Gim victory; the opening half told a very different story.

Rondebosch showed they have enough firepower and physicality to make even the country’s leading school uncomfortable.

SACS arguably went one better.

At home, they pushed Paul Roos all the way to the final minute before the Maroons finally escaped with a nailbiting 38-34 victory.

Those results matter.

Not because Wynberg should suddenly be regarded as underdogs, but because they serve as a warning that the two teams waiting for them are not simply going to make up the numbers.

Wynberg have enjoyed a season to remember and are firmly in the driver’s seat for Southern Suburbs bragging rights. But the final two hurdles could be the most treacherous.

Now they have to prove they can finish the job.

On a big derby day, regional titles and season-long bragging rights will inevitably become background noise. For 70 minutes, none of that will matter. It is all about the moment.

But when the dust settles, Wynberg could either be celebrating their most satisfying Southern Suburbs seasons since 2014, when they last won six out of six — or wondering how a seemingly complete campaign slipped away as the form team.

SACS chasing a rare double

At the other end of the Southern Suburbs, SACS will be determined to complete a season double over Bishops when the sides meet on 15 August 2026.

SACS already have the advantage, having beaten Bishops 22-17 in April.

A second victory would have some significance. Last year the schools uniquely drew both encounters, while one has to go all the way back to 2015 for the last time SACS managed to beat Bishops twice in the same season.

So there is a little bit more than local pride at stake.

Either way, the Southern Suburbs are finishing the season with plenty left to play for.
