Battle of Krugersdorp II in 2026- Monnas vs Nories

After the funfair of Battle of Krugersdorp I — which delivered the proper hype and support of a big interschools derby — comes the sequel.

And this time, there is a whole lot more on the line even if is just limited to a first team match instead of being full derby day.

The Monument Witbulle 1st XV will lock horns with neighbours Noordheuwel for the second time in 2026 when the two sides meet at Ras van Rooyen Field on Tuesday, 18 August, with a place in the prestigious Noordvaal Cup Premier League final at stake.

The date was specifically approved by the Noordvaal committee to ensure that SA u18 international players would be available, adding another layer of significance to what is already one of the biggest fixtures of the season.

The first encounter was anything but close.

Noordheuwel were in a difficult place at the time and the scoreboard told the story: Monnas ran riot for a 41-15 victory on the Ras van Rooyen.

But that was then.

What makes Noordheuwel’s turnaround so impressive is how rarely schoolboy rugby produces genuine in-season recoveries. More often, teams that start brilliantly gradually fade as the season progresses. The reverse — a team finding its feet, rebuilding confidence and finishing significantly stronger than it started — is far less common.

Noordheuwel have done exactly that.

What once looked like a distant playoff dream became a reality, and they eventually secured a comfortable third-place finish ahead of several schools that, on paper, appeared more likely to make the semifinals.

Now they have a genuine shot at something that would have seemed improbable earlier in the season: beating Monnas and advancing to a chance of claiming their first-ever Noordvaal Cup Premier League title.

That is quite a turnaround.

Monnas have rediscovered their bite

While Noordheuwel’s star has been rising, 2026 has been something of a renaissance for Monument after several relatively subdued seasons.

The Witbulle have assembled a seriously talented side and, when they get into attacking rhythm, they are exceptionally difficult to contain.

But there is a flaw.

For all their attacking potency, Monnas have shown an inexplicable tendency to switch off defensively. They can dismantle an opponent one moment and then leave the door wide open the next.

Noordheuwel will have to exploit that weakness.

The problem is that it is easier said than done.

After their shock uncooked opening defeat to a determined Diamantveld side, Monnas have lost only three matches — all against highly rated opposition. Indeed, only the two national powerhouses have managed to keep the Witbulle below 30 points.

In their other 16 matches, Monnas have scored at least 32 points in every game.

That is an extraordinary attacking record.

It also explains why Noordheuwel cannot afford to give Monnas cheap possession or easy access to space. Their opportunity may lie in the moments when the Witbulle lose concentration, but they will have to survive long enough to capitalise.

A giant waits in the final

Whoever emerges from Krugersdorp will not have the luxury of easing into the final.

Waiting on the other side of the draw is the winner of Garsfontein and Waterkloof. All good money is on The Bere!

Garsies arrive as the defending champions, having won the Noordvaal Cup Premier League for three consecutive seasons. They went unbeaten in the 2026 league phase and are beginning to look like very good value for a fifth title.

Waterkloof, meanwhile, have already shown that they belong in the conversation even if the second part of the season has been a lot more of a rollercoaster ride.

Whatever the outcomes, there is no soft landing waiting in the final.
