Marlow was crowned on Saturday as the champions of Die Burger Rugby Competition after beating Paarl Boys High 11-10 in a thrilling final.
FINALS LARGE SCHOOLS
The match was played at Cradock in front of Marlow’s huge number of loyal supporters.
It is very, very difficult for a visiting team to win at Marlow, and this final proved it.
The Marlow players tackled like demons and kept up a very high tempo for the whole match.
The Marlow forwards impressed in the scrums and in a number of scrums Paarl Boys High got the ball on the back foot.
The way the Marlow players counter-attacked also impressed and a very prominent player in their attacks were no 8, Luigy (Anker) van Jaarsveld. He is a thorough “footballer” and showed a lot of pace when he scored his team’s only try.
Paarl Boys High played an attacking style and kept the ball in hand, but they should have made better use of the strong wind behind their backs in the 2nd half.
MAN OF THE MATCH – Van Jaarsveld (Marlow)
BACKLINE PLAYER OF THE MATCH: Jordaan Schoeman (scrumhalf, Marlow)
FORWARD OF THE MATCH: Ruben de Villiers (lock, Paarl Boys).
POINTS: Marlow – try by Van Jaarsveld and penalties by Gerhard Potgieter (flyhalf) and Andre Kritzinger (center)
Paarl Boys: Tries: Wian Gouws (wing) and Curtley Grain (center)
Referee: Ruhan Meiring (SWD).
FINALS MEDIUM SCHOOLS
In a very entertaining match Brandwag (EP) gave an impressive display to beat Augsburg 49-33.
Brandwag are a very well-drilled team and their rolling mauls were pin-pointed executed.
After been out on their feet in the first halve, Augsburg (Clanwilliam, Boland) came storming back and at one stage there were only a few points separating the teams.
But the class and power of Brandwag were at the end too much for the Bolanders.
PLAYER OF THE MATCH: Morney Moos (flank, Brandwag)
FORWARD OF THE MATCH: Adriaan de Waal (hooker, Augsburg)
BACKLINE PLAYER OF THE MATCH: Shevaan Hendricks (flyhalf, Brandwag)
POINTS: Brandwag: Tries were scored by Moos (3), Michael Venter (wing), Frankie Fourie (lock) and Armand Ferreira (replacement), Hendricks also kicked 5 conversions and 3 penalty goals.
Augsburg: Tries: De Waal (2), Jaydrin Kotze (center), Ruben Brand (center) and Tiaan Oertel (wing). Brand kicked 4 conversions.
FINAL SMALL SCHOOLS
Excelsior Secondary gave an excellent display to beat Bertram Secondary (EP) by 39-3.
Excelsior plays an attacking style of rugby and their playmaker was flyhalf Dennis Cox. Cox (who played last year for the WP Cravenweek team) is definitely one of the best schoolboy flyhalfs in South Africa. His vision, passing skills and attacking skills are top-class.
MAN OF THE MATCH: Dennis Cox (Excelsior)
FORWARD OF THE MATCH: Denver Beukes (no 8) Excelsior.
BACKLINE PLAYER OF THE MATCH: Clint Damon (center) Excelsior.
POINTS: Excelsior: Tries: Daniel Joubert , center, (2), Damon (2) en Noël Makiet (replacement). Cox kicked 3 conversions and 2 penalty goals. Lyle Marcus (fullback) also converted one of the tries.
Betram: Penalty by Caylem Goliath (centre).
Altyd iets vir my duister
@akw: Then you would probably know my Brother-in-law as well…He is also called Rooibaard there at Marlow
@Ploegskaar: Julle moet maar ekstra gewig saambring Brug Straat toe…lyk my dis weer n makro pak volgende jaar….
As the uncle of the captain of Marlow I am extremely proud of their achievements over the last two games.
I appreciate that Boishaai had a long season, but taking into account Marlow is a little “plaas skool” with 240 pupils it is still an amazing achievement.
No poaching necessary….
Take a bow Marlow, this is a mammoth victory in your books.
Well done!!!
Eish!
@Rusty I know they lost against Grey 26-5, not sure about Queens but they did not play Dale. Altogether Marlow had a up and down season great wins and surprising defeats. Grey was without a doubt the best EP team this year.
@PRondersteuner: Welkom terug in die Top 10….Het julle gemis die laaste 2 jaar…
@tandemfitarborsurculus: Lyk my julle is maar gelukkig met tweede wees!!!!
Did Marlow play against Queens, Dale Selborne or Grey PE..those are pretty good bench marks. hats off to Marlow, two nice wins against strong teams.
Ek is baie trots.
Dankie Rooikat
Watter kriteria of wie se kriteria gebruik “Die Burger ”
Well said. The amazing thing is that this team is obviously very good in terms of Marlow standards but they have lost against “weaker” opposition eg Hudson Park. Interschools against Oakdale was a disaster, yet they somehow found it in them to produce the biggest and most famous victories in the schools history against Outeniqua and Paarl Boys within 6 days.
If you look at past winners of this competition it is really a great achievement for this small school.
Wonder if they’ll give Dennis Cox a run with the WP U-19’s sometime this season.
Probably unlikely given that there is probably 2015 Baby Bok Ernst Stapelberg, 2013 SA Schools flyhalf Brandon Thomson, Siya Alam & Luan Boshoff also there.
Cox was ahead of both Alam & Boshoff for the WP Craven Week side last year though so he might have a shot if one of the first two goes down.
I had to read the comments elsewhere with my helmet on- for protection from the bricks and half bricks flying in the Paarl. Marlow, has always boxed far above its weight- for decades. I have always admired them for doing so and no matter what the circumstances, this is a tremendous achievement for a school with so few learners, but with such a big heart.
