Unbeaten schools Grey College, Garsfontein, Wynberg and Glenwood top the first official BHP rankings of 2014. Only schools playing a minimum of 6 games were considered.

@Ronald: Thanks Ronald – very cool

@BOG: Just a Panga that has been passed down from my great grandfather who fought in the Frontier War Season 6
@Djou: Ek slaap selfs met die shades aan so is altyd ok, AT kwalifiseer vir ‘n spousal discount by sy local, knolla op die boek by wyse van spreke
@Andre T: @Ploeg; Jammer ouens, ek het so gelag oor jul kommentaar, hoop julle altwee score somehow!
@Ploegskaar: I really hope you are right and that 2015 will be different. But I somehow recall a similar discussion last year.
@Playa: did you only take a traditional weapon?
@Andre T: I’m too afraid to ask what that prize is
@Ploegskaar: Nee, net die charity events
@Playa: Was against mine as well but when I heard what the 1st prize was I couldn’t resist
@Andre T: So sy speel die Pro/Am’s darem.
@Andre T: It’s against my culture to do such
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
@Playa: You’ve never entered the Big Willey competition there?
@Ploegskaar: Spear se vrou dink ook so. Onthou net hy gryp al my ex’e. So sys aan ‘ baie ‘ gewoond.
@Andre T: Skerp.
@Andre T: I haven’t been there since that deadly brawl in the early 2000s
@Playa: When did you see it?
Don’t tell me you’ve also participated at Pniel.
@Andre T: Eish! Sorry my bru…you Afrikaners all look the same I gets confused
@Ploegskaar: History?
@Playa: No Playa, that’s Spear. I’m still the King of Pniel
@Ploegskaar: He did admit to being ‘challenged’ and having difficulty finding women.
@Djou: This year was an exception, usually there is almost a month between the ERF’s and WK, and some schools planned accordingly. Those that declined (understandably) this year, will be back at the various festivals next year, there is no way that any organizer will penalize headline teams like Paarl Gym and Outeniqua, that I can assure you. Common sense vs blind ambition if you ask me.
@Andre T: Going by your history, I doubt wether you can arrange a score outside a brothel.
@Djou: I doubt if the 2 of them can arrange a ‘score’ in a brothel.
@Ploegskaar: It is not nearly as simple as the way you put it.
If a school declines, forget about receiving an invitation in future. Also, these weeks are where the scouts do their recruiting. These are the weeks where the boys get exposure. So, if you as a school don’t pitch up, the boys are the ones losing out. So, don’t blame the schools for not declining invitations.
There is nothing wrong about these weeks, it is all about the scheduling. I said before, it is time the organisers get together to co-ordinate the tournaments.
You don’t have to have a KERF every year, or a Wildeklawer every year, for instance. It is possible to alternate and also to work according to school terms. If the terms and school holidays change or fall away, so should some of these events.
So, if the organisers don’t want to co-ordinate, they only think about their own events. It seems you and BoishaaiPa know most people. Why not arrange such a co-ordinating meeting for them?
@BOG: Of Grey….?
Dit is of buiteland of n alternatiewe liga
@Rugbyman: Each to his own.
@BuiteBreek: This discussion will never be over as long as parents, boys and teachers put money, gifts, introductions or any other form of coercion above the immediate school and its community. I spoke to a sport promoter of a PTA school (not from the Atterbury triangle) who admits to luring talented boys to his establishment but, the school does not have a hostel so, in his words, we try and keep the community kids at home and attend our school. So there seems to be a difference in approach when it comes to recruitment. Maybe this approach is the more accepted point of departure. As long as victory is uppermost in the minds of schools, this point of view will not get much support.
@Andre T: Altyd mater, altyd.
It cuts both ways. Vat maar die pyne soos dit kom. Have fun…
Hijacking of young rugby players.
Ek dink ek moet my skoonma daar laat rondry…..hopelik gaps iemand haar
@BoishaaiPa: ou grapkas…
Euro’s of n R 600-00 Bokbaadjie?
@Tjoppa: Ek stem.
I really feel that us as a community should stand up and insist that this is stopped immediately. The rugby union should get involved but as long it is cheaper to import quota players than developing them yourselves they will not lift a finger.
Therefore I propose an sizeable “quota levy” to be paid on ALL players leaving their province of origin, white black green or blue. Then use that money for development in the country. I promise only then this will be stopped.
@Andre T: By die sandvelde van Mamelodi. Dis waar ‘n regte scout ‘n PD speler identifiseer.
@Rugbyman: Hard to believe.
2 years back your current loosie – PJ Toerien – was poached from us.
@Rugbyman: Die cowboys ook?
@Andre T: hey… ons ouens in pretoria ry karre…
@Rugbyman: And especially not in front of their horses.
@Andre T: @Andre T: very true… cowboys dont cry…
@Tierklou: and by the way… out u/16 centre was just poached last week by menlopark… so its not just u that suffer…
@Tierklou: Nobody is poaching players. Opportunities are given.
Rhinos get poached
@Tierklou: sorry tierklou… as far as I know the school is not involved in this particular instance… I dont even know who plays for u… so I plead innocent this time
@Rugbyman: Who is behind the poaching of players at Garsfontein – the school or Blue Bulls union?
Three of our o16 PD players was approached to further their school at Garsfontein.
Maybe it is time for SARU to make an example of a school with this stinking attitude.
@Djou: Ag nee. Damn. Hoe het dit gebeur? Dit breek my hart as so iets met n kind gebeur.
@Djou: Tx for the info… Paul is going for a proper scan today or tomorrow… only then will we know for sure what his prognosis… nevertheless it is a BIG blow…
@GREENMASJIEN: Agree, The boys are driven like machines to perform at these tournaments. As a parent of these Superschools I experienced this firsthand. It’s all about rankings for the prestige and honour of the schools. The professional era brought this monster that needs to be fed,…and it grows every year. The conditioning programs for 12 months,…the boys are identified,…and lured to these Superschools to strengthen them ,.. with the U/19 year in mind. Don’t get me wrong,…. I absolutely love schoolboy rugby, but I sometimes feel that the boys are offered…..at any price. What happened to a balanced , happy, content kid that enjoys life and just play rugby for the love of the game.
@BoishaaiPa: Ok, dankie.
Festival and knockout rugby is very tough on the boys.I think something will have to change for the safety of the boys. The schedules could change, allowing for proper recovery or the squads could increase in size?
@Djou: Just to be clear, teams play at the Easter Festivals by invite, therefore because they want to and not because they have to. Because of the proximity of the ERF’s and WK this year some teams therefore declined to play in the ERF’s. The only one’s to blame here are the responsible people at those schools that want to play the big schools and chase the rankings, not?
@Andre T: Sorry to inform you about the bad news, but one of your favourite players probably out for the season.
Paul sustained a long term injury. Apart from him, another six Garsies out of the clash against HTS Middelburg. But, not only Garsies who sustained injuries. A number of teams picked up a lot of injuries. Grey College also suffered a great deal.
The rugby schedule is just madness.
Consequently, expect the rankings to change dramatically after Saturday’s Tuks semi-finals and Wildeklawer. Do the organisers really expect teams such as HTS MIddelburg and EG Jansen to play at the Easter festivals, a few days later in the Tuks semi-finals and another few days later at Wildeklawer? They just don’t care about the players, just about themselves.
Shame on you!
@Speartackle: Jip as als volgens volgens plan verloop.
@Andre T: Garstfontein???
@Andre T: where on earth did they sneak in from, if they were on the 18th
Pietersburg sneaks in to win from nowhere. Klerksdorp 2nd and Garstfontein 3rd.
It’s between Klerksdorp and Garstfontein for the Tuks Super 16 Golf title at Vaal de Grace, Parys at the moment. They’re playing the 18th..
Come on Little T and your team.
@beet: Last year Paarl Gym and now Glenwood. What did BHP do to recreate the miracle. Can we organise this surprise next year for a more deserving team.
@BoishaaiPa: Ek probeer volgens die stelsel uitwerk hoe Tygebreg se punt van 2.85 bepaal is. Help my asb waar ek verkeerde verstaan.
@Grasshopper: Not that big but they are busy !
@BoishaaiPa: korrek ma affies rekord lees -speel 5 verloor 4
@Vleis: Weird that, I was told they were well over 800kg, maybe I’m wrong…
the ranking table has been updated
The KZN preseason 20-min per half games have been taken out of the equation and Outeniqua’s most recent game has been added.
@Grasshopper: Waterkloof has a massive pack you say? Per the St John’s programme, the total pack weight was some 670kg, with no boy exceeding 88kg.
I’m fairly certain that the weights were understated in the programme; however, I’ve nevertheless been told that Klofies do not have a large pack this year.
@Grasshopper: They are right up there, I knew they would be solid this year, a lot of experience in key positions.
If the team is fully fit, with Jaco and Vidima in the mix, they are top 5 material, no doubt in my mind
We all know Glenwood is not the best side in the country…..yet. They have two massive games next week in Waterkloof & Outeniqua. If they win those then they really are a quality top 5 side. Waterkloof look a very very good outfit, same with Outeniqua. Both with massive packs….
Jy sal dit more weer moet doen.
@BHP- Home ground advantage , margin of victory?
@burra: Simple statistical maths..Grey College won against schools ranked higher than schools that Paarl Boys won against. ..It is not just about winning ratios, but of quality of opposition as well.
I don’t know why everyone is giving Spear a hard time about his lack of ability with the ladies. Have any of you him met a Wesrand ” chick”. Scary is an understatement and I have the battle scars to prove it.
@Woltrui: i agree with you on that one.
why should Grey College be put up first but Paarl Bois 7th and yet they have the same record. GLENWOOD should be up there at no.1
@Beet Many thanks for all the interesting info , can we also have the squads for the Wildeklawer festival.
@Speartackle: When you wake up in the morning go to the mirror and say with true emotion to the person in the mirror ” Do not worry I love you”. And then if you find that does not help go back to the mirror and go tell that two face bastard to *%(*&% off.
@Speartackle: Do you need a tissue there mate?
@Pinotage: Sien ek jou nog Maandag?
@Grasshopper: Good coaching. The bulk of the team has played together since under 14. They all played for the 1sts as Grade 11s last year, so they have experience to boot..No stars in the team, just a bunch of committed young men.Quite impressive.
I feel sad. Everyone is nasty to me.
@Ploegskaar: Nada. On results it should be:
1. Glenwood (8/8)
2. Garsies (7/7)
3. Wynberg (6/6)
4. Paarl Bois (7/8 1 draw no loss)
5. Grey Bloem (7/8 1 draw no loss)
6. Menlopark (7/8)
7. Grey PE (7/8)
You’s picking Grey Bloem for mahala as no 1?? Their record is the same as Paarl Bois who you put at 7.
@beet: The top 50 would be nice to see as some less traditional power house schools (ltps) would like to use it as motivation for hard work by the boys.
@Ploegskaar: These are Louis Botha recorded results on this website:
01/03/2014 Louis Botha 32 8 Landboudal
08/03/2014 Louis Botha 16 13 Diamantveld
29/03/2014 Kingswood 20 23 Louis Botha
31/03/2014 SACS 11 27 Louis Botha
02/04/2014 Westville 22 8 Louis Botha
12/04/2014 Grey College 44 27 Louis Botha
= Louis Botha played 6 won 4. Not sure if they had more games in March
Thanks Ploegskaar- your explanation makes perfect sense. I suppose over the next 4 weekends this top 20 will see some big changes with some big games coming up. Wildeklawer and the semis and finals of the Tuks series
@Grasshopper: Good coaching, excellent basics and a team that largely consists of gr. 12’s that were blooded last year. They are simply efficient, well drilled and play for each other and the coaches.
Sean has accomplished something similar with a Boishaai team that contains few stars and some even wrote off after the Noord-Kaap draw. They were very unlucky that day (18-2 penalty count against them) and should have been 8/8. Too little has been made of that win against Outeniqua in George IMO.
@jakes: Although I am not privy to all the nuts and bolts of BHP’s formula, it is fairly good even just going by results:
1.GCB 7/8 (1 draw, no loss)
2.Garsfontein 7/7
3.Wynberg 6/6
4.Glenwood 8/8
5.Monnas 8/10 (1 draw, 1 loss)
6.Grey PE 7/8
7.Paarl Boishaai 7/8 (1 draw, no loss)
8.Menlopark 7/8
9.Maritzburg College 4/5
10.Selborne 7/8
11.Paul Roos 5/7
12.HTS Middelburg 6/8
13.Tygerberg 6/6
14.EG Jansen 5/7
15.Transvalia 5/8 (1 draw, 2 losses)
16.HTS Louis Botha ?
17.Waterkloof 4/6
18.Nelspruit 5/7
19.KES 6/7
20.Dale College 7/9
Maybe, as mentioned, Outeniqua (4/6) should be in there.
Just out of interest what is happening at Wynberg? They have honestly come from nowhere in the past few years. No disrespect to them but they have normally been a top 50 school but not top 10…..good coaching or good intakes?
@Woltrui: As stated last year, the age group rankings that I posted was courtesy of Schools Rugby Scores, for which a link has now been added just above the stoopstats link on this blog. I will check with Desmond when he will be posting his first age group rankings and maybe Master Beet can then arrange with him to post them on here directly every week, as they do provide for good conversation. I unfortunately do not possess the acumen or knowledge to compile my own rankings.
What I do know with regards to BHP’s rankings though, is that Outeniqua has indeed played 6 games (they are 4/6) and should perhaps feature in the T20. Oddly Paarl Gym will once again not feature on the rankings after Wildeklawer according to the 6 game criteria, as they will still only have played 5 games. Maybe the qualification should be adjusted?
@Playa: Jirre I am also getting worried about the Wesrander. Maybe a local problem in Krugersdorp? The guys know their rugga but they obviously know nothing about the ladies.
Asseblief Ploeg.
@Playa: He cannot see the wood from the tree or a bird from a bee. If you ask me. But I promise you he knows where to find the 1st tee.
Hoe loop die struike Mr T?
@Speartackle: What exactly in women do you battle to see and cannot find? It may just be a case of being challenged in biology rather than technology.
Not to mention intellectually disadvantaged, previously and presently
@beet: You know that I’m technologically previously disadvantaged, if I don’t see something I can’t find it. That’s why women also normally approach me first.
@Bulle: Dankie Bul………….jys seker na Saterdag nou n ‘ Witbul ‘ ?
@Speartackle: I will reload it as a current post. It’s under the menu festivals above
@Speartackle: You can visit the next site;http://www.schoolsportsnews.co.za/rugby/gim-v-affies-in-2014-wildeklawer/
@boishaaipa
who’s the next 10?
@beet: Where can I see Day 2 fixtures for Wildclover please?
@jakes: Affies, Gim and Outeniqua havnt played enough games yet to qualify. They will slot imto ranking after Wildeklawer.
@jakes
eg’s 2 losses at kearney cost then dearly much beter than that
Early days, but I like it as it lies now. I honestly don’t think Glenwood will be able to maintain an unbeaten record but Top 10 is still a possibility. They have some huge fixtures in Waterkloof, Outeniqua, Affies, Grey Bloem, Monnas and College twice to get through. If they can win 2 or 3 of those then certainly top 10 by end of the season…..Go Green!
Would have liked to see the top 50, why stop at 20?
Wow Affies not in top 20 but I am sure they will bounce back. Also EG Jansen position probably a bit unjust seeing that have won HTS Middelburg convincingly who have beaten Monument. I gueSs their two clashes and losses against top 2 schools, Grey College and Glenwood did not do their ranking justice
KES is a bit of a surprise in at 19 but still early days I guess. I think in time the likes of Jeppe, Oakdale, Outeniqua, Boland Landbou and Bishops will all overtake them once things settle a bit.
