@Djou: This year was an exception, usually there is almost a month between the ERF’s and WK, and some schools planned accordingly. Those that declined (understandably) this year, will be back at the various festivals next year, there is no way that any organizer will penalize headline teams like Paarl Gym and Outeniqua, that I can assure you. Common sense vs blind ambition if you ask me.

@Ploegskaar: It is not nearly as simple as the way you put it.
If a school declines, forget about receiving an invitation in future. Also, these weeks are where the scouts do their recruiting. These are the weeks where the boys get exposure. So, if you as a school don’t pitch up, the boys are the ones losing out. So, don’t blame the schools for not declining invitations.
There is nothing wrong about these weeks, it is all about the scheduling. I said before, it is time the organisers get together to co-ordinate the tournaments.
You don’t have to have a KERF every year, or a Wildeklawer every year, for instance. It is possible to alternate and also to work according to school terms. If the terms and school holidays change or fall away, so should some of these events.
So, if the organisers don’t want to co-ordinate, they only think about their own events. It seems you and BoishaaiPa know most people. Why not arrange such a co-ordinating meeting for them?

@BuiteBreek: This discussion will never be over as long as parents, boys and teachers put money, gifts, introductions or any other form of coercion above the immediate school and its community. I spoke to a sport promoter of a PTA school (not from the Atterbury triangle) who admits to luring talented boys to his establishment but, the school does not have a hostel so, in his words, we try and keep the community kids at home and attend our school. So there seems to be a difference in approach when it comes to recruitment. Maybe this approach is the more accepted point of departure. As long as victory is uppermost in the minds of schools, this point of view will not get much support.

It cuts both ways. Vat maar die pyne soos dit kom. Have fun…

I really feel that us as a community should stand up and insist that this is stopped immediately. The rugby union should get involved but as long it is cheaper to import quota players than developing them yourselves they will not lift a finger.

Therefore I propose an sizeable “quota levy” to be paid on ALL players leaving their province of origin, white black green or blue. Then use that money for development in the country. I promise only then this will be stopped.

@GREENMASJIEN: Agree, The boys are driven like machines to perform at these tournaments. As a parent of these Superschools I experienced this firsthand. It’s all about rankings for the prestige and honour of the schools. The professional era brought this monster that needs to be fed,…and it grows every year. The conditioning programs for 12 months,…the boys are identified,…and lured to these Superschools to strengthen them ,.. with the U/19 year in mind. Don’t get me wrong,…. I absolutely love schoolboy rugby, but I sometimes feel that the boys are offered…..at any price. What happened to a balanced , happy, content kid that enjoys life and just play rugby for the love of the game.

@Djou: Just to be clear, teams play at the Easter Festivals by invite, therefore because they want to and not because they have to. Because of the proximity of the ERF’s and WK this year some teams therefore declined to play in the ERF’s. The only one’s to blame here are the responsible people at those schools that want to play the big schools and chase the rankings, not?

@Andre T: Sorry to inform you about the bad news, but one of your favourite players probably out for the season.
Paul sustained a long term injury. Apart from him, another six Garsies out of the clash against HTS Middelburg. But, not only Garsies who sustained injuries. A number of teams picked up a lot of injuries. Grey College also suffered a great deal.
The rugby schedule is just madness.
Consequently, expect the rankings to change dramatically after Saturday’s Tuks semi-finals and Wildeklawer. Do the organisers really expect teams such as HTS MIddelburg and EG Jansen to play at the Easter festivals, a few days later in the Tuks semi-finals and another few days later at Wildeklawer? They just don’t care about the players, just about themselves.
    Shame on you!

It’s between Klerksdorp and Garstfontein for the Tuks Super 16 Golf title at Vaal de Grace, Parys at the moment. They’re playing the 18th..

Come on Little T and your team.

@BoishaaiPa: Ek probeer volgens die stelsel uitwerk hoe Tygebreg se punt van 2.85 bepaal is. Help my asb waar ek verkeerde verstaan.

the ranking table has been updated

The KZN preseason 20-min per half games have been taken out of the equation and Outeniqua’s most recent game has been added.

@Grasshopper: Waterkloof has a massive pack you say? Per the St John’s programme, the total pack weight was some 670kg, with no boy exceeding 88kg.

I’m fairly certain that the weights were understated in the programme; however, I’ve nevertheless been told that Klofies do not have a large pack this year.

If the team is fully fit, with Jaco and Vidima in the mix, they are top 5 material, no doubt in my mind

We all know Glenwood is not the best side in the country…..yet. They have two massive games next week in Waterkloof & Outeniqua. If they win those then they really are a quality top 5 side. Waterkloof look a very very good outfit, same with Outeniqua. Both with massive packs….

    4. Paarl Bois (7/8 1 draw no loss)

@Grasshopper: Good coaching, excellent basics and a team that largely consists of gr. 12’s that were blooded last year. They are simply efficient, well drilled and play for each other and the coaches.

Sean has accomplished something similar with a Boishaai team that contains few stars and some even wrote off after the Noord-Kaap draw. They were very unlucky that day (18-2 penalty count against them) and should have been 8/8. Too little has been made of that win against Outeniqua in George IMO.

@jakes: Although I am not privy to all the nuts and bolts of BHP’s formula, it is fairly good even just going by results:
    1.GCB 7/8 (1 draw, no loss)
    2.Garsfontein 7/7
    3.Wynberg 6/6
    4.Glenwood 8/8
    5.Monnas 8/10 (1 draw, 1 loss)
    6.Grey PE 7/8
    7.Paarl Boishaai 7/8 (1 draw, no loss)
    8.Menlopark 7/8
    9.Maritzburg College 4/5
    10.Selborne 7/8
    11.Paul Roos 5/7
    12.HTS Middelburg 6/8
    13.Tygerberg 6/6
    14.EG Jansen 5/7
    15.Transvalia 5/8 (1 draw, 2 losses)
    16.HTS Louis Botha ?
    17.Waterkloof 4/6
    18.Nelspruit 5/7
    19.KES 6/7
    20.Dale College 7/9

Maybe, as mentioned, Outeniqua (4/6) should be in there.

@Woltrui: As stated last year, the age group rankings that I posted was courtesy of Schools Rugby Scores, for which a link has now been added just above the stoopstats link on this blog. I will check with Desmond when he will be posting his first age group rankings and maybe Master Beet can then arrange with him to post them on here directly every week, as they do provide for good conversation. I unfortunately do not possess the acumen or knowledge to compile my own rankings.

What I do know with regards to BHP’s rankings though, is that Outeniqua has indeed played 6 games (they are 4/6) and should perhaps feature in the T20. Oddly Paarl Gym will once again not feature on the rankings after Wildeklawer according to the 6 game criteria, as they will still only have played 5 games. Maybe the qualification should be adjusted?

Early days, but I like it as it lies now. I honestly don’t think Glenwood will be able to maintain an unbeaten record but Top 10 is still a possibility. They have some huge fixtures in Waterkloof, Outeniqua, Affies, Grey Bloem, Monnas and College twice to get through. If they can win 2 or 3 of those then certainly top 10 by end of the season…..Go Green!
