Bosch has a date with Triple Crown destiny

01 June 2024
The first Southern Suburbs coronation ceremony of 2024 seems to be a formality. Rondebosch heads to the normally no-cameras-permitted arena of the Piley Rees to play the battling Bishops. As a measure of their strength, Bosch has seven representatives who were picked by Western Province for Craven Week and another two for Academy Week, compared to the nil from Bishops. With high-scoring round-one wins against SACS and Wynberg under their belt, Bosch are firm favorites to test the 50-point barrier in this outing, which is expected to deliver them the hat trick of Southern Suburb wins, commonly known as the Triple Crown.

Rugby continues to flex its muscles at Bishops, where the recovery plan is set to get more priority in the form of a Q&A meeting involving the under-pressure head, coaches, the chairman of the council, and parents. Date: Tuesday 4 June 2024

The other Southern Suburbs match promises to be a more interesting affair. A strong Wynberg hosts a competitive SACS team. Wynberg also has seven boys who were called up for Craven Week duty and a further three who will be heading to Academy Week. The well-coached SACS, with two Craven Week players, is not the sort of team anyone wants to take lightly. With the Berg defense conceding an average of 44 PPG during their last three matches, this is one area of massive concern that they will be looking to fix. A win against SACS is imperative if Berg hopes to stay in the race for the overall title.

@ Beet. I agree. There are some defensive weaknesses. I am not close to the school/team at the moment but I wonder if they are not missing the input of Craig Childs the former head of rugby. He has/had been the defensive coach for the Ikey Tigers and Wynberg for many years but has moved on to coach at WP under 21. Hopefully the boys manage to pick it up for the second half of the season.

    SACS beats Berg 30-29.
Wynberg’s season started so well incl the last minute win against HJS but going South at the moment. Four loses in a row now (three at home). Defensive can’t keep opponents under 30.

Bishops gave a good account of themselves throughout the match. Lots of positives. Bosch, maybe not their best effort today but used their maul to good effect and also had their star players come to the fore when it mattered.
    Bosch 31-16 Bishops

Bishops vs Rondebosch is on TV today.
    Its a PI interschools match.
So the only Piley Rees game that gets broadcast.

It’s a derby game and anything can happen, but I’d be very surprised if it’s anything other than a Bosch win on the Piley tomorrow. I never ever want to discount any opponent (look at what happened against Milnerton!). Still, I think Bosch will prove strong and should be comfortable in the end.

I think the SACS v Berg game is going to be a cracker! Berg clearly a talented team but are wounded and have lost some form recently – SACS are very competitive and shouldn’t be discounted. Both teams will be well up for this.

    Predictions:

    Bosch to win by 25pts
Berg to win a close won by 5pts

Here’s some recent facts about Bish-Bosch at the Piley. Results since 2009 (hope I got the scores right as this is from memory):

    2009: Bosch won 16-10
    2010: Draw
    2011: Bosch won 34-18
    2012: Bosch won 19-11
    2013: Bosch won 22-7
    2014: Bishops won 22-21
    2015: Bishops won 36-23
    2016: Bosch won 30-26
    2017: Bosch won 32-19
    2018: Draw
    2019: Bishops won 36-26
    2021: Bishops won 51-10
    2022: Bosch won 20-15
    2023: Bosch won 36-25

    Pld: 14
    Draws: 2
    Bishops wins: 4
    Bosch wins: 8

Find it odd that Bishops have struggled at the Piley in the derby for the last decade or so. I think it’s more even on the Tinkie Heyns but still…
