The Jansies host the Klofies for the second time in 2024, this time in a top-of-the-table Noordvaal Cup Premier League match.

In mid-April, Kloof stunned the South African schoolboy rugby fraternity by beating the highly fancied Jansies 45-38 in Boksburg. This win allowed Kloof to top their NWU Skolesportsreeks group and paved the way to claiming the cup. Since then, the Pretoria macro school has proven their worth as one of the top 1st XVs this year.

The groundwork for Kloof’s win against EG was laid by turnover pressure in the first half. Among these were a well-weighted kick inside the 22 that forced a 5m scrum, a contested high ball, a charged-down exit kick, and linespeed pressure in midfield that led to a fumble. They converted these turnovers into 35 points and had a comfortable 35-14 lead at the break.

Incredibly, the Jansies, who enjoyed a couple of long-range run-in tries from turnover opportunities of their own, fought back to level matters at 38-all by the time the hooter sounded. From a set move off the very last scrum of the match, outside centre Riwan van Aswegen busted through several tackles and carried for 60m to score a memorable match-winner.

In the other big game of the round, Nories host Helpies. Although the Wesranders have a match in hand, there is a must-win feel about it if they hope to stay in touch for a playoff place. Not making the top four in the league would not only be a setback for the improving rugby programme, but it might also result in the season falling short of expectations.

Helpies themselves are an unpredictable team. In fact, things are so tight amongst the top six schools this year that it is not inconceivable that the first team to sneak into the last playoff place could go on to win the overall title. It may all come down to fine-tuning, injuries, other luck, and form on the day to decide this exciting race.

Few very interesting games the last few years between the two teams and Saturday is going to be no exception. Both teams are on fire! Definitely my feature game this weekend with Menlo not playing 😬

Last time I watched a match at EGJ Boksburg, couldn’t find a seat so literally had to stand behind the deadball line, ground level southwest corner. Sulking over my bad luck the tries started raining down right in front of us. There must have been 5 tries scored in the corner that day, literally only a few metres in front of my eyes. And they were all stunning skilfull efforts, you could smell the deep heat, got dust in my eyes from the flying tackles, heard the sounds of impact. That’s where I’ll be standing again on Saturday.
