@Vyfster: :-D Jy is doodreg!

@Vyfster: Just my five cents worth – I really enjoy the new PUK series we play in. Much better than current Tuks series. Good competitive sport for us as we are not as big and strong as some of our Pta neighbours. It also exposes our kids to new schools that we are not used to playing and although the travel aspect is difficult for us, we will learn to cope with it over time. I agree that in its current format the Tuks series has served its purpose.

With regards to Virseker – You must remember that the group structure for this years competition was based on previous years’ results and also that of the whole school and not just the first teams (and maybe a little thumb suck as well  ). It therefore stands to reason that there might be 1st teams this year that will beat other 1st teams that are in a higher division. I think that the current Virseker structure is the right way to go but that it will take a few years to have the right schools play in the right divison. However, I fully agree with you that you can expand the divisions to 10 each without weakening them. I agree that schools like BV, OM, FM, Lichtenburg, Ligbron etc. will not be out of place in division two. But on the whole, my view is that in all three top divisions you will have extremely competitive rugby with everybody standing a chance to win on the day and ultimately that is what we all want – to have strength vs strength rugby with the best team coming out on top.

Just another side comment – In my days all the winter sports played the same schools which created great atmosphere on a Saturday when the rugby boys got to support the netball (or korfbal!lol: ) and hockey girls and vice versa. Nowadays the netball and hockey leagues are played during the week and the rugby end up playing alone on a Saturday with half empty stands. That is why these mixed sport friendlies early in the year are so great as it is the only time during year that the whole school end up competing together.

@tzavosky: Great idea, i fully agree.

on a slightly different subject, i believe the shield teams are as a group stronger than the plate teams in division 1, and putting 10 in each group would adress that issue as well to a degree.
In Yesterday’s NWU interprovincial finals , the game for 1st and 2nd place was between Lichtenburg and Middelburg (both Shield Teams) whilst Noordheuwel, Marais Viljoen and Zwartkop (all plate teams ) fought it out for minor placings…in fact Zwartkop lost against Potch Volkskool (division 2 team), think MV finished 13th.
Some scores between shield and plate teams illustrate my point
    Ben Vorster 39-8 Centurion
    Oos-Moot30-19 Centurion
    Oos-Moot 36-16 HTS Middelburg (div 1 cup)
    Lichtenburg 43-15 Noordheuwel
    Lichtenburg 37-31 Marais Viljoen
    Lichtenburg 18-17 Zwartkop
    Jeugland 27-26 MV
    Pietersburg 12-12 HTSM (cup)
    Die Anker(div 2) 18-12 Noordheuwel
    Potch Volkskool (div2) 39-22 Noordheuwel
Potch Gim (div 2) 27-21 Montana

Just a few examples to illustrate my point….it shows clearly that 30 teams in div 1, divided in groups of 10 will be even more exciting…move Rustenburg to the cup, add Waterkloof for their 10…..then 3 of the shield to the plate, maybe anyone of Oos-Moot, Ben Vorster, Lichtenburg, Middelburg or Florida
That would leave 5 teams to move from div 2 to div 1 shield….maybe Potch Gim, Ligbron, Frikkie Meyer, Potch Volkies and Secunda
That would add even more spice, to an already very exciting format!

@Vyfster: If it was my call, I’ll increase each section of division 1 to 10 teams (adding Waterkloof to Cup, plus the winner of Plate, etc) and starting the competition earlier, with a number of friendlies arranged by schools themselves during March. But that doesn’t bode so well for the hockey and netball girls.

@tzavosky: yeah, I fully concur….Tuks series is regarding Rugby not a good thing anymore, basically just Helpmekaar joining the same teams for Virseker with Eldo’s, Pieties and Kempies dropping to shield and plate, I think its days are numbered
It is a nice competition for all the other sports, but not rugby anymore….we’ll see what happens next year, originally TUKS were 16 teams, now they are only 11.

@Vyfster: Another nice touch about this series is that apart from BV and Oos-Moot none of these teams will play against one another in the league stages of Virseker (BV and O-M used their fixture to count for both). However, if you look at the fixtures of the Cup section of Virseker, it’s basically the same teams that played one another in TUKS.

I don’t know what the arrangement was between Lichtenburg and Middelburg, but at 1st team level they’re scheduled to play one another for the second week in a row next Saturday, which I think is unfortunate.

Interestingly, this Matric group of Klerksdorp and Transvalia was in their grade 8 year the 2 top u/14 teams in the Northvaal by a countrymile, and definite top 5 material countrywide. They demolished all macro teams that year.
They played each other in Tuksreeks final, with Klerksdorp winning….then it was reversed in Beeld series for big schools, with Transvalia the champions

Klerksdorp has lost many of their players, whilst Transvalia retained the core, and even strengthened their team, as their 1st team results show this year….amazing how their fortunes have diverged

Some of Transvalia’s results this year borders on the ludicrous, who else can put a score like today against EG Jansen? Not even Grey came close

@beet:I Think it was first postponed due to heavy rain, second date also rained out, fixture cancelled and point shared for purpose of the series.
This series doesn’t have a final….just 5 schools from different provinces playing each other. Winner of series determined on points for wins etc, just like a normal leaugue.

Ben Vorster is again the overall rugby champions….and their first team also winning series. They won all 4 of their opponents, OOs-Moot lost against BV and FM, Centurion also lost twice, against BV and OM, FM lost 2 of their 3 completed
games (against BV and Centurion) and Klerksdorp lost all 3 their games with the 4th game against FM cancelled
    I think Klerksdorp”s u/14A are their age group champs. and Centurion’s u15’s
Oos Moot also have a couple of team champs, so it’s a very nice little series to start the season, between schools fairly level in strenght….good warmup for Virseker, and a nice change to experiment a bit

@oppimoot: Verwag ‘n nog ‘n harde dag Sat daar by julle. Veral na julle goeie wen by KHS.

Interesting, Klerksdorp ran into the same Boksmart problem as BV last week – both starting and reserve props were not allowed to play, which was compounded by injuries to the LH and the replacement LH.

@tzavosky: If comms an issue, then school must start the process months ahead of need and sommer use a blanket approach. Maybe easy for me to speak after the fact, but safety of kids NNB. Even if parents agree, the coach must assess and vet (in my mind).

@Valkie: I originally spoke of BV’s particular circumstances – 30% of their learners are black kids, many of them are from rural areas, which sometimes make communication with parents difficult, which accounts for the signed letters of consent being received only on the morning of their first game of the season. It’s not that the coaches and administration didn’t take the necessary steps.

@tzavosky: @beet: Is not the responsibility of the coaches to ensure that all is legal in terms of ‘boksmart rules’ even before a season starts? You cannot arrive for a game as a coach and not know what is going on or attempt to do something that you know is not above board. I don’t have the facts in this case thus my comments are neither here nor there.

I know what the coaches and administrators do in Puma land and they are very strict on the application of ‘boksmart’ protocols.

Also if I understand the ‘boksmart’ protocols correctly, front row players are treated differently to other players, I also don’t agree with it but it’s there for a reason. I have a son in a similar situation/position.

@beet: @tzavosky: Like BB rightly says this has been around a while. We encountered the problem in 2016 when a hooker (then 16) could not play at the St. John’s against Boishaai due to this ruling and he got him cleared to play only 2 hours before the match. It happened again last year when an u17 prop (but this time not an experienced front rower) of the same team was not allowed to participate and the rumor mill was due to the fact that he is u17 in an u19 tournament and then the twist…..he did not have 2 years front row experience. To me that was a paradox, but nevertheless he could not participate. The tragedy of this to me is that it in fact robbed this very physically strong individual (who could seemingly compete well at that level) of valuable experience, whilst another u17 team mate was in fact allowed to play in that same team for the entire season. To me if there is a rule, no problem, just apply it consistently, not only at the festivals and the top tier of schoolboy rugby.

@tzavosky: I worry about a situation where a technicality or school official not making sure all certifications done on time results in a boy having to play back to back games in the frontrow and right at the start of the season as well when match fitness is often still an area with room for improvement. Surely the risk of injury to this overburdened frontrow player is unacceptably high?

@beet: I don’t know if this is new, but I only became aware of it when someone explained why BV could not field their preferred front row.

From what I understand: In case of an u17 frontrower the school needs a signed document of consent from the player’s parents. With BV’s particular circumstances those documents of consent were only received this morning. They were handed over to the match officials, but apparently they must be countersigned and stamped by the chairman of the referee’s association of the province (or some such). That person was in Pietersburg today, so BV phoned him and offered to mail him the documents, but apparently he doesn’t accept mails.

    Not an ideal situation!

@tzavosky: Has there been a change in this regulation. I remember ahead of last year’s preseason warm-up tournament in KZN (Vories Night Series) there was also a caution issued by the KZNRU but in terms of u17 frontrow participation it really just meant that the schools had to do their homework and have their u17 players properly certified to play in the frontrow.

This was the KZN statement issued:

A match day audit will involve checking the BokSmart status of each coach, manager and referee involved in the festival. I would strongly advise emailing all the school’s involved in the festival to warn them that a BokSmart audit will take place and that their team lists and the certification status of coaches/managers will most definitely be checked.

Depending on whether the tournament is U18 or U19, BokSmart Schedule A and B forms may required for players where applicable. Please clarify the age-grade of the tournament for me as soon as possible. This especially important for U17 front row players who may not play in the U19 age-grade, and/or U16s in the U18 age-grade without the requite clearance from KZNRU (ONLY Archie S). No player will be allowed to participate in the festival without the correct documentation – this is always a sensitive issue for schools so the more warning they have of this, the better.

Please request that every coach, manager and referee have their BokSmart cards available for inspection, failing this they should at least be in possession of their ID Number so I can verify their status on PlayerCap. Referees will be carefully scrutinized to ensure they conduct ALL the correct pre-match safety checks and that referee match day forms are submitted to you at the end of each fixture (this information will be disseminated by the MRRSS to its officials).

The audit will also involve an inspection of the fields to ensure they are correctly marked and that other controls and safety measures have been put in place (like crowd control, technical zones, medical aid, emergency action plans, venue map etc). If you are unsure of what protocols to follow, send me your cell number and I’ll call you later today to discuss these details. Should you wish to review the match day audit protocols yourself, you are welcome to refer to your BokSmart DVD or go to the website: http://boksmart.sarugby.co.za/content/boksmart-legislation [audit controls].

@Vyfster: Team disrupted at the last minute by a Boksmart ruling about u17 frontrowers which meant 2nd team props had to play two full matches – ask Piet Smit about it, he knows the full story.

FM was full value for their effort. Almost a repeat of last year’s Limpopo final, only saved by a brilliant individual effort by one of the centres at the death. Probably early days, but backline not as slick as usual.

@Valkie: Ek dink variërende vermoeëns speel ‘n groot rol in die rondskuiwery.

    dus

Ek wens KHS sterkte toe hierdie jaar.

…Ek skimp Mnr Brand…..
