School rugby supporters in Kwazulu-Natal are in for a real treat in 2013. Hats off to Maritzburg College for this one. Despite already having their plates full organising what is already building up to be a top notch Easter rugby festival as part of their 150th birthday celebrations, College has bravely accepted the massive task of hosting the 2013 Wildeklawer Superskole event just a month later. Simply put Wildeklawer is the premier 1st XV schools rugby festival in the country. All the traditional rugby powerhouse schools are on the invitation list and the other schools making up the 16 teams in the field are usually not far behind terms of high performances in any given year. In addition to this, everyone who’s anyone of importance in junior scouting and agency circles is at Wildeklawer every year without fail. This gives a good indication of the talent on display and hence the importance of the festival. For spectators Wildeklawer always delivers on its promises. Both locals and visitors can prepare for a memorable occasion where they get to witness quality school rugby played in a good spirit. However it is not just about 1st XV rugby at Wildeklawer. Putting on a tournament that includes various age-group rugby matches as well as a girl’s nedball competition requires a lot of careful planning and dedication to the cause. Making it even more complicated to host in 2013 is that the 01 May Public Holiday around which Wildeklawer has often been centred, falls slap-bang in the middle of the week. This poses a huge challenge but College is up for the task. Players and coaches will be accommodated in and around Pietermaritzburg during their stay.

Grasshopper – agree with you
Glenwood need to host a top class 1st team tourno-
always said that
cannot remember when last Durban had something like this – lots of good enjoyable local 2nd tier tournos early next year though – Porties and Gelofte
I’m already filling in my leave form for that week ……..
@BoishaaiPa: It is so early that the confirmed things are that a/ it will be at MC b/that all 16 schools have confirmed.
Schoolboy rugby is going to rock again next year keep an eye on some of these players.
RudolphSnyman – (Affies lock)
EW Viljoen -(Grey College full back)
Warrick “Boogie” Gelant – (Outeniqua utility player)
Duhan van der Merwe – (Outeniqua left wing)
Thomas du Toit – (Paarl Boys High prop)
Alexander Jonker – (Grey College loose forward)
Justin Phillips – (Waterkloof scrumhalf)
Fantastic news for schoolboy scouts IMHO it’s more like Bulls idols.
It’s nothing new to Werner and Xander that’s where they seal some of the major signings now the Bulls just need a tukkies gazebo.
@beet: How sure are you that the dates are finalized? I heard there is still a few schools that has a problem with the 4th May date as they have other commitments. 27Apr to 1 May would suit most schools better. I also doubt that they will make PMB the permanent venue. WK home is in Kimberley and on occasion they will take it somewhere else when a school celebrates a special birthday.
Nice, I will now have to come up to PMB to watch. Can’t wait until Glenwood start/host a festival, Durban needs one…
And the added benefit that the local teams do not face the trip. I blame the travel burden from Grey and Wildeklaver this year for the big loss to KES as well as the injury toll.
Massive year for College next year if you look at the program. We will have our own Saturday batch at the Midmar Mile, our own start batch at Dusi, possible slight change of the Comrades route down College Road and round the Dusi side of the school. All good, looking forward to it.
@CyndiAtRugby: I bet there are plenty of Glenwood parents that are pleased about that one hey Cyndi
The possibility exists for PMB to become the permanent venue if all goes well.
Wow – that’s exciting and should also save lots of money in terms of sending my boys.
