Grey College’s powerhouse rugby results

A Wildeklawer match-up between the Grey College, the best South African boys only high school at rugby and Paarl Gymnasium, the best South African co-ed rugby school looks set to be made official next week. This effectively means that Grey will compete for a powerhouse grand slam for only the fourth time in their history, with 2010,2011 and 2012 being the three previous seasons in during which they took on all four fellow powerhouses namely Affies, HJS Paarl Boys High, Monument, Paarl Gymnasium and Paul Roos.
Grey has annual inter-schools dates with Affies, Boishaai and Paul Roos but opportunities to play against Gimmies and Monnas have been limited in the past. The arrival of the school rugby festivals in the form of  the Wildeklawer Skouspel (2009) and the Kearsney Easter Rugby Festival (2008) has provided the Bloemfontein powerhouse of SA school rugby with new opportunities in recent seasons to take on these non-traditional rivals and make Grey College unique in the sense that they are the only 1st XV that has the chance to win a powerhouse grand slam.

In 2010 Grey’s amazing undefeated team completed a clean-sweep, winning all five games as part of the perfect season. Their 2011 team also went through the season unbeaten but were held to draws by Boishaai (and also by Selborne) along the way.

There have also been eight occasions when Grey has played four out of the five powerhouse schools.

Grey College’s record against the powerhouse rugby schools from 1987 – 2013.

@BoishaaiPa: Thanks. Great stats. The rugby participation rate is clearly higher at the boys schools.
As for the Pretoria schools, Waterkloof provided the wrong stats or it was written down wrongly (rule of thumb – always doubt the round numbers). Waterkloof, Wonderboom and Eldoraigne are the largest schools in terms of numbers – all of them having about 2 000 learners.
The new stats should become available within the next week.

@Beet, yes, heard the same news.

I have also heard that Maritzburg College now plays Grey PE at WK

@Djou: Not all the Boys in a Boys only school play rugby either..but… In 2011 Paarl Gim did a analysis of all the schools that participated in their u/16 tournament and came up with these results. The obvious result is that the bigger the amount of boys, the more rugby players available, but % wise the smaller schools like Boland Lanbou and Marlow have very high % participation. What is prevalent though ( and in line with your thought) is that the mixed schools might have about the same number of boys and some even more than boys schools , but the % participation is much lower.

@Tjoppa: You’ve got me – what school and what news.

But 900 boys – no think twice, maybe here and there in a super macro school. I would think it is about 700 boys. Remember the demographic composition of SA – roughly 55% girls and 45% boys according to the census. In a school of 1 600 it gives you 720 boys.
However, it is not just the number of boys that counts. In a “mixed” school, many boys don’t play rugby or are not interested in rugby at all.

@Maroon: In my opinion the boys only schools should always perform better on the rugby field.
But they can’t put girls netball and girls hockey teams on the field.
So maybe we should differentiate between top boys only schools and top schools.
Only Paarl Gim and to a lesser extent Waterkloof can compete on the rugby field against the top boys only schools. But even they will struggle to field 28 rugby teams.

@jakes: Jakes the fact that all the competitions are structured around the first teams are one of the reasons Affies withdrew from them. It can’t be fair to the laaities playing in the lower teams can it? At Affies the laaities in the lower teams, and remember there is 6 teams in every age group-up to 10 teams in the open groups, must also have oppurtunities to play rugby. What must the schoolboys do when a small percentage play the 6 weeks long Tuks reeks and then the Beeld trophy, which is just as time consuming. That is why it is IMHO better to play interschools against the likes of Grey Bloem, KES etc. These schools also provide competition, 4 games per age group, in sports like hockey. My kids played in the Super 16 (Tuks reeks) as well as in interschools. I prefer Interschools by a long shot.

@ Maroon- I understand to what is meant by “powerhouse”. But fact is these days the up and coming rugby schools only focuses mainly on their A teams and their 1st teams,Simply because that is the way it is headed to..Money, lack of coaches, lack of interest by boys makes schools only focus on their main teams. ALL the competitions in the Noordvaal are structured this way these days and that is the future of schoolboyrugby, especially in the Noordvaal..

@jakes: A “powerhouse” is a school that competes with all 28 teams and not just with the 1st xv. That is the true measure of depth and coaching. Too many schools these days invest only in a 1st xv and age group A teams.

@ Bog- I am sure in those years(70’s 80’s and early 90’s when Kempton park was rated as one of the top rugby schools in the noordvaal, they could have matched Grey very easily..They took a dip for a lot years. Now they are right up there and might soon field a team that could take Grey on or even beat them.Only time will tell.. All I am saying is that it is good that there are more schools that can take GREY on than the original powerhouses. It still does not change the fact that Grey are rated the nr. 1 school in history.

Scary stats. The 2010 Grey Bloem side winning all the top schools by big margins. Remember the Grey Affies game. Just when Affies thought they were coming back into the game Grey just went into a next gear, almost scoring at will. These Bloem okies are still way ahead of the pack. What is the most impressive about Grey Bloem is their depth. If you compare the lower teams scores against opposition a person get the idea how far in front they are.

KES has a fantastic record against Monnas played 24 won 14 lost 9 draw 1

therefore KES should beat Grey regularly
