Craven Week Team of Day 1

With the help of Ludz and Noordwes, I’ve put together this Team of Day 1.

# NAME TEAM SCHOOL DETAILS
1 JP Zaayman Pumas HTS Middelburg Was outstanding in the first half vs WP today
2 Jayson Reinecke Border Cambridge The relatively unknown player did very well.
3 Conraad van Vuuren Pumas Nelspruit Led by example for 70 minutes. Incredible workrate
4 Hyron Andrews Bulls Garsfontein Did brilliantly in the lineout
5 RG Snyman Bulls Affies Forward of the Day. Not just great at setpieces. Good in the tight and he is ball player in the loose. Provided the assist for 2 tries
6 Daniël Maartens Pumas Nelspruit The opensider was phenomenal today. Contested tackle ball and carried extremely well
7 Hanro Liebenberg Boland Drostdy An outstanding game. A go-to player who came up with a big play when his team needed it most
8 Ayron Schramm KZN Kearsney Showed his x-factor today. His 2 individually brilliant tries were a big part of the reason why KZN were able to keep the Bulls in check for the first 35min
9 Rowan Gouws Pumas HTS Middelburg Has a solid all-round game. Neat pass and good box kick.
10 Andries Bruwer Limpopo Ben Vorster The little pivot was the key to most things good for his team today
11 Dimitrio Tieties Griquas Noord-Kaap There was little agreement on this choice. In a very disappointing Griquas effort Tieties was the only decent player so I made the call. Jade Solomons, Arno van Staden or Liolin Zas could easily have filled this position.
12 Daniel du Plessis WP Paul Roos Back of the Day. The word fullhouse most adequately describes his effort. His decision-making, carrying, passing and physical presence all top notch.
13 Jurie Linde Bulls Affies An attacking weapon of note. Jurie is incredibly quick and picks the right lines. He showed some good footwork as well.
14 Grant Hermanus WP Paarl Gim Another thinking player. He plays a high percentage game based on making good run-kick-pass calls
15 Raylin Philander Boland Hugenote A day when the obvious choices Corne Vermaak and Eduan Keyter had a quiet day, Philander stood out
16 Francois Steyn Bulls Affies Had a solid match as part of a dominant pack
17 Johan Van Wyk Bulls Waterkloof Another rock solid performer in the tight.
18 Johan du Toit Boland Swartland The Boland lineout functioned very well today.
19 Willandré Kotzenberg Pumas HTS Middelburg Had an amazing workrate today.
20 Damian Stevens WP HJS Paarl Livewire scrummy exercised good options today
21 Dennis Cox WP Excelsior Touch and go here. Jameel Warnick played a composed game for the Bulls. Cox however produced an outstanding accurate passing game.
22 Franco Naude Bulls Garsfontein Unlucky. On any other day, his effort might have earned him a start. Today Daniel du Plessis was untouchable. Franco was very good too.

Waar is die toernooi? Sal graag weer Stellenberg se o14 span weer sien speel.

Couple of things that stood out for me.

    1. Quality of games werent very good. Players dont think on the field.
    2. The Doop brothers might be very physical but their work rate is very low. Read they might be injured and if this is the case I would not play them.
    3. As mentioned before the 5 lock of Bulls really stood out.
    4. Couple of other players not mentioned yet that I like was the 11 of Limpopo and 6 of Boland.

@Ploegskaar: I understand what you are saying, believe me I do and you are right, but I do not whole-heartdly agree with you.

Both age and size do play a role, no matter how much you may disagree with me. A big, strong boy who has good pace off the mark, is going to cause a smaller boy a lot of trouble in a game. The smaller boy may tackle once, twice, three times, but eventually in a one on one situation, the power and size advantage will tell.

You made mention of Aplon and Cruden, Aplon should not be mentioned as he does not defend an inside channel, most of his defence is lateral – oushing players to the outside, which he does well.

Cruden is very well looked after by the likes of Reid, who is just an amazing number 8! If Mr Spies came charging off a quick lineout at Cruden, believe me, he will get over the advantage line all the time! Nonu is a master at breaking the line, this is due to size and power – simple…

Again, Jamie Roberts of the lions, George North, they will always make ground – just the way it is

@Ploegskaar: In general, defense at school boy level is not of a great standard. The boys bodies are not yet ready to put all on the line, as in open level with Super 15 etc

An 18yr old may be big and strong, but his skeletal structure is still very young and in the process of getting not only bigger, but stronger too.

They can not be expected to kill themselves on defence! Besides, it is SBR and I love watching running rugby, albeit with weaker defence

@BoishaaiPa: And that’s my point, yesterday’s games looked more like festival games, ‘n los-tros getjommel with plenty of running and very little tackling, but let’s put that down to the lack of cohesion you mentioned. I hope to be surprised, preferably pleasantly!

@Ploegskaar: That is probably because of expectations and point of view…You will rarely see a great match at these weeks because these teams have only had a few weeks to gel into a unit..it is not like pro teams or school teams that have known and played with each other for a long period….and the nature of the competition also is not conducive to having great rugby spectackles…Here it is all about winning your matches and performing well so that you can get a shot at the SA Schools spot!…or the unofficial “final”..This is not festival rugby…this is more like test rugby, although with a lot more running! If you dont expect to much..you can still be surpized! Lesson learned long ago!

@BoishaaiPa: Since 19-voertsek I have seen small boys with big hearts floor big fatties at primary school, age group and u/19 level, and the two things that set those smaller boys apart are the basic requirements for good defense: technique and most importantly attitude in the tackle. As jy bang is gaan jy op jou gat sit! With regards to expectations, a bit unfair, as when it comes to SBR I never have any besides wanting to watch a good game of properly played rugga. I saw good moments yesterday, but not good games.

Some good & some not so good rugby on day 1 – lot’s of players trying to show their own skills off and quite often it looked like a sevens tournament – lot’s of good running, offloading and most first halves were played at unbelievable pace – with the more solid sides taking control in the second half. WP vs Bulls on Wednesday should be classic. Looking forward to SWD’s game today – they should make the “final” in my opinion.
It’s still a great tournament and it’s great to watch.

@BoishaaiPa: We watched all the games yesterday but we are not perfect nor experts, so the differences in opinion are welcomed. :) The list is subjective. For me it is there for a dual intention: to inform and to provide a platform for debate. I for one will be surprised if Vermeuelen and Bothma are not invited to final SA Schools trials even though they are not on the list.

I also wanted to say it’s one thing to praise a player for a good performance and another to say he was the best performer of the day in his position. To make the latter assessment one has to at least watch all the other players in action that day.

@BoishaaiPa: Your post, as expected, is slightly tainted by the distinct Boishaai flavour of the WP team, don’t be so protective! By the way, the first paragraph of my comment was more an observation than criticism and a reference to all the games, not only the poor performance of the WP forwards. On a positive note, at least Dante is on his way to the CW, he would have been a deserved selection initially.

@Boishaaipa: I agree with you about your wing and about your statement on play. The standard is blady high.

In terms of missed tackles, that is going to happen. Some of these boys are 100kg plus running with exceptional pace and power, not easy to tackle.

I heard some comments about the Bulls flyhalf not being able to tackle when Schramm wen through him – made me laugh! 103kg against 75kg – the flyhalf tried his best and got handed off, it happens, where were the loosies? Why were they not protecting the inside channel?

Anyway, yes, the standard is high and none of us could do any better! Must also just say, your number 12 is crazy good – is he releated to Carel?

Critics everwhere….The game changed a lot with different scrum rules etc etc…Every year since 19 voetsek I hear the complaints about the poor standards…As if any of us could do any better!..I think you are expecting to much from the boys.

That being said I think that maybe Beet and Co did not watch the WP game that well!..No 11 from WP was by far the best 11 on display…cutting in at angles at pace and offloading well…and rounding off a well worked try…Generel defence was also good except for the 1st Pumas try when his own fullback took him out of the defence!

Having watched the recorded games last night, the general standard of rugby honestly left much to be desired in my opinion. From the poor set-pieces to lack of basic skills, most of the games resembled Sunday touch games between two teams of babbelas students, as opposed to the country’s top players representing their Provinces in our SBR showcase. Even the moments of “individual brilliance” were mostly down to poor or non-existent defense and should put the performance of the relevant individuals in perspective.

BTW, going on above list of players, one would think that the Pumas won the game. Remember, our standard of rugby and SA sport in general will only improve the day that we discontinue the nasty habit of rewarding failure.

By verre die beste slot sover. Boland Limpopo game was regtig patetiese rugby.Dink Zimbabwe sal hulle beide in flarde gespeel het vandag.Enige iemand wat vandag twee of drie goed in die wedstryd reg kon doen sou goed gelyk het.

Really impressed with RG Snyman today, very impressive both at the set piece and in the loose, Daniel du Plessis was simply in a class of his own today, enjoyed the Limpopo flyhalf, everytime the young lad touched the ball things seemed to happen. Also very happy to see a favourite of mine 2 years at the Grant Khomo play well in the latter stages of the final game. JP van Wyk the Limpopo no.12 was an impressive flyhalf 2 years ago

Conraad van Vuuren, the Pumas tighthead, I really enjoyed this guy, great energy, great workrate, good scrummager, definitely an SA Schools candidate for the no.3 jersey.
