Lying low Monnas keen to win the Malcullum Marx Match

Monument are normally a school 1st XV that draws a huge amount of interest at the start of any given season. In 2024 things have been a bit different. It has been a subdued, no attention grabbing preseason for the Witbulle, a main feeder school for the GLRU youth week teams. It may have something to do with lowered expectations amongst the public about how they will fare in 2024.

The talk and speculation are finally over. It is time to unveil the team. First up on 16 March is Welkom Gim, who after three meaningful matches have their eye in and are relishing the challenge of taking on the well-known rugby high school in Krugersdorp.

Welkom Gim settling in well and prove too strong for Glenwood (26-21)
Welkom Gim matched Glenwood’s physicality from the word go. Gim also scrummed well and used the good base to launch meaningful attacks. Gim dominated for 60 out of the 70-minutes. Standout coach Roean Bezuidenhout was very pleased with his team’s form and they are hoping to carry it into this big match.

Monnas have great success in their first home game of the season. Thanks to tradition and commitment to keeping the memory of a former 1st XV player Malcullum Marx alive, this first home match carries special meaning.

Marx was an outstanding wing in the Witbul team of 1992 and 1993, with the 1993 season being one of the best in the Co-ed’s history. It consisted of 28 wins in 29 games and included a hard-fought win against Affies. Marx scored 18 of his school’s astonishing 144 tries that year and was selected for Transvaal Schools. Before he could take advantage of doors that had opened for a bright rugby future at the Bulls after school, he tragically passed away in a car accident in the school holidays at the end of his matric year.

The first home match of the Monnas Witbulle season is now named the Malcullum Marx match.

64-28, now that is a statement! Maybe shows how poor Glenwood were. I hope not. Monnas top 10 again…
