Bishops are all set to host a rugby festival to commemorate their 175th birthday in 2024.
The festival will consist of two matchdays – Thursday, 21 March and Saturday, 23 March 2024.
Out of province schools Grey High, Hilton,Kingswood, Michaelhouse and St Andrew’s will join local Cape Town schools Milnerton, SACS and Wynberg as the confirmed participants.
There should be interesting international flavour as well. The Stellenbosch Academy of Sports is listed to attend and plan to field an u19 team with a 50% foreign composition. Youngsters from the Netherlands as well as Australia, England, France, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Namibia, Russia, the UAE and the USA could be amongst those selected.
One of the main matches will be Bishops versus Michaelhouse for the Guy Pearson Trophy.

@yesnomaybe (Comment #37)
If you stay in the Woesrand it might be deemed deliberate.
@Ystervark (Comment #35)
Ok managed to open link, thats called a clash of heads. No player deliberately runs into another player aiming to hit him with his head head, so I disagree with ur assessment of a cheapshot. In Pro rugby & in slow mo there most probably would be a card as the body height was wrong but its definitely not intentional or in ur case a cheapshot.
@Ystervark (Comment #35)
If u wanna back that up
send a link that can be opened.

@yesnomaybe (Comment #33)
I have the video and Wynberg 7 smashed him in the back with without any arms and he got concussed from the whiplash
@Ystervark (Comment #32)
Wow, where does that cheap shot comment come from. The match was played in good spirit with not a single incident off the ball. Before u open a whole can of worms, I have seen the video & it was a clear clash of heads. The boy suffered an epileptic fit on the field, he went to hospital & thank goodness was released the next morning in good health. So before you make some wild observation from a beer tent, do some research, look at the video & then make ur comment.
@Toffee (Comment #25)
The St Andrew’s player was injured by an off the ball cheap shot by one of the Wynberg boys. Nothing to do with heatstroke.
@yesnomaybe (Comment #30)
Thank you. Not sure what happened to make that result disappear.
@beet (Comment #28)
It looks like you missed the Grey High vs Sacs match which was played on the Thursday which I see is not reflected anywhere. Grey won 7-3.
@beet (Comment #28)
As I told you the other day, Wynberg to scramble a few big eggs this year
@yesnomaybe (Comment #27)
I’d mentioned to someone before the kickoff that I would put a lot of money on Wynberg to beat Kingswood, because I was so confident that they would win.
I would have been 1/4 in predictions yesterday because the other three results went against what I expected the outcomes to be.
@beet (Comment #26)
@beet, you mention all the teams,so why no mention of the Wynberg demolition of the “giant killers”. Thought that Berg completely dominated the set pieces & once that started the Kingswood jeering & excitement soon faded. Wynberg pack starting to fire properly with a big frontrow, solid locks & a good combination in the loosies, with a twinkle toed 8th man & an enforcer at blindside flank. Big tests still to come but will be interesting to see how this team develops.
1st XV Day 2 produced some surprises.
Hilton with a margin over Grey High
SACS scoring late to beat House
Bishops edging out SAC
Saw the last few minutes of the Kingswood/Hilton game and they were defending their try line at the end with some desperation and you could see it meant a lot to win. The St Andrews vs Wynberg game was a lot closer than the score indicates. St Andrews played some brilliant high risk rugby and in the first half unlocked the Wynberg defense a number of times. Wynberg were predictable on attack in the first half with the big inside centre going for the crashball every time. St Andrews I think turned them over in the 25 at least three times (the St Andrews no 6 was very effective). St Andrews deservedly led at half time, however they succumbed to the physicality of the Wynberg team who ran away with it in the second half. There was a dampener in the 2nd half when one of the St Andrews players collapsed and went into a fit. It took a good 10 to 15 minutes to stabilize him. From what I heard it was from heat stroke. Playing rugby in 30+ degrees is very difficult. I struggled with the heat watching in the shade!
Bishops are going to struggle this year, certainly from what I saw of them at the Wynberg festival. Michaelhouse are a good side. Hopefully St Andrews will be able to get up for the Bishops game tomorrow, they looked very tired. Both sides play high risk running rugby and should be great viewing.
Wow! So Kingswood is going to be the Giant Slyers this year! That is an incredible result against Hilton. Something is going right at Kingwood and horribly wrong at Hilton..
REVIEWS ANYONE?
Wynberg Kingswood is a game to look forward to
Michaelhouse 37-17 vs Bishops away. Statement (I think) and/or fading Bishops star? No video may make sense …
Nhaa silly stuff from Bishops, was so keen to put my feet up and enjoy some school rugga. Madness and indeed selfish.
Indeed, what a stupid policy. I don’t understand it and to keep the country school rugby lovers from enjoying the feast of rugby makes no sense at all. It’s irrational, sad and selfish in my opinion, whatever the reasons!
@Running_Rugby1861 (Comment #15)
What’s the reason given by the top brass for not streaming any home games?
Congrats on the 175!
@beet (Comment #13)
Yes, at least 65% of the 1st XV and about 45% of the XI hockey games end up being streamed anyway.
@Roger (Comment #14)
Would not change the no numberd for anything
As a person who lives Bishops Rugby, streaming is a dirty word at the school. Not that people don’t want it, but it’s being blocked by the school top brass.
Anyway, congratulations on 175 to my school.
@beet (Comment #13)
I’d love to understand their reasoning? I mean, with their no numbers policy, no-one knows who the f#ck is who anyway.
@Roger (Comment #11)
They can only control it on their home events. For example both their games at Wynberg last weekend were streamed
@Toffee (Comment #10)
From a SBR viewer point of view that policy really sucks.
I wonder who is the driving force behind it.
Hopefully it pays dividends in live attendance figures to justify it
@Toffee (Comment #10)
that would be home games surely – Bishops are playing KES at at the KES festival and I’m pretty sure the entire festival is televised?
Bishops had a policy last year of not allowing any of their games to be televised. I am hoping they will change this for 2024 but have no expectations. I live within walking distance so planning to see a few of tomorrows games and hopefully one or two on Saturday. There are some interesting match ups and it is not often we get to see the likes of Michaelhouse and Hilton against local sides so looking forward to it.
Will this be televised, the Bishops festival?
Guy Pearson
Interesting sidebar here : his identical twin Lindsay, was principal of Grey Primary in PE before his retirement. Their older brother, Clive – whom you may remember – had some probs as head at Maritzburg College ‘cos he wasn’t an old boy of the school. He left and became head of Port Alfred High. (MC actually formally apologised for his ordeal some years later). A great family of educators and true-to-their-E Cape-roots lads.
@Snelvuur (Comment #6)
Yes Milnerton doing good things this season so far.
They are going on a tour to Namibia to take place in the Desert Festival in Walvis Bay 26-28 March, so perhaps the rest next weekend will be better now.
It’s a shame Milnerton has not been given a match against one of the schools’ teams. They nearly, nearly stole a result at Boland Landbou last week. I was impressed with their 9 and 12.
@vonke_44 (Comment #4)
Yeah. Kearsney pulled out and I’m not sure if Bosch ever confirmed their attendance or if they saw playing at Kings Park as a better opportunity for their players
Should be a great weekend of rugby. Could be mistaken, but were Rondebosch and Kearsney not on the preliminary attendance list as well?
assuming that’s Adelaide, Eastern Cape.
175 an incredible legacy
Fantastic news – have been hoping for these KZN vs SS clashes!
