Ref stops play to lecture players about the value of respect

Salute to Michael Collier, the referee during one of  last Saturday’s  Grey High Festival 2022 high profile matches. Collier had had enough of the antics of the players towards each other and more embarrassingly for their schools, towards him as an adult and the referee. He stopped the match and gave both sets of the players a much-needed lecture individual lecture.

Headmasters and senior school officials have zero tolerance for noise while a kick at posts is being taken but seem fine with their boys and employees having a full go at match referees and society assistant referees. This is a standard in a downward spiral. Hopefully those with the power to influence change, can bring about a more positive attitude in line with the ethos people have come to expect from just about all of the top rugby schools.
