School rugby coaching structure changes for 2022

As usual there are a number of big movements in schoolboy rugby. Here a list containing 17 changes that have taken place in recent months.

1 Robbi Kempson Grey HS Pro Rugby / SuperSport Director of Rugby Queen’s
Arguably the highest profile appointment in SBR over the past 12 months is that of Kempson, who effectively replaces Allan Miles at the helm. Bëan van Eeden continues in his role as head coach, while Miles is still a teacher at Grey.
2 James Winstanley Kingswood Hudson Park Head Coach Dale The massive loss for Hudson and Border rugby is the massive gain for Kingswood. Winstaney replaces Jonny Mallett who returned to his alma mater St Andrew’s College during the second part of 2021.
3 Sean Erasmus HJS Paarl BH Pro Rugby Head of Rugby Escourt If ever there was a SBR coach who had paid his dues and earned the right to advance to the top echelon of the sport, it is Erasmus. Sadly for now it is not meant to be. No matter how it goes this time around at first team level, he has already achieved immortality for those three unbeaten local seasons in a row during his last stint with HJS. Unparalleled stuff!
4 Peter Engledow DHS HJS Paarl BH Head Coach Table View The former Griquas pro rugby head coach left Boishaai with the kind of record most SBR coaches could only dream of: played 26 won 23! That has to say something very positive about his pedigree because the Cape is often the most difficult region to succeed in.
5 Ruan Lombard Glenwood DHS u16A Head Coach Affies After a couple of years as the Durban High School head coach, Lombard leaves the residential suburb of Essenwood for Glenwood. Interestingly as part of the reshuffle, former Bok prop Heinke van der Merwe will move up from u16A to assist Derek Heiberg at the Green Machine 1st XV level.
6 Corne Uys Paul Roos Pro Rugby Head of Rugby The hardest SBR job in all of the Land! Paul Roos changes head coaches almost as fast as Chelsea Football Club boss Roman Abramovic axes managers. Even still it’s one of the most highly sort after and therefore prestigious jobs in SA SBR.
7 Hans Coetzee Drostdy Durbanville Head of Rugby Rustenburg After his top-billing achievements last season, the experienced campaigner was head-hunted by the Donkeys.
8 Sylvester Booysen Eldoraigne Drostdy Head of Sport Eldoraigne As an old boy, Booysen is set to be extra motivated to help turn things around at Eldo with signs looking quite positive after a bit of a downward rugby spiral in their rugby in the recent past.
9 Peter Schutte Durbanville Ben Vorster TBC Eric Louw (Messina) A passionate coach and educator, looking to make a difference in the Northern Suburbs at a school that’s made a meteoric rise to the top but now face a few difficult seasons ahead.
10 Reinhard Gerber Ben Vorster Germany Director of Rugby Monument Highly respected coach who seemed destined for bigger things while in Durban. A good acquisition for the Vossies of Tzaneen.
11 Jeremy McLaren Northwood Northwood u16A Director of Rugby Sentraal (Bloemfontein) Sort after KZN Sharks Craven Week coach McLaren, who has coached Glenwood and Westville 1st XV’s in recent years, replaces old boy Jonathan Scruby, who had been excellent in that role. Scruby has moved to the UK.
12 Grant Ball Michaelhouse Michaelhouse 3rd XV Head Coach The former St Stithians 1st XV coach and English teacher has been promoted to the top job following the departure of Carl Bezuidenhout to the UK. This has also been a one of those jobs that has changed hands a quite a few times in recent years.
13 Cameron Fraser Maritzburg College Hilton 1st XV assistant coach Goudveld Worth his weight in gold, the former College 1st XV head coach and teacher will plug the hole left as a result of the departure of AC Blume to a deputy head possie at Paul Roos.
14 Tim Orchard Maritzburg College Maritzburg College u16A Head Coach Maritzburg College Second time in the hot seat for the likeable MCOB / teacher who held the reins a few years back and will no doubt bring a lot more experience to the structure this time around. This job rates right up there as one of the most unstable in the nation due to all the chopping and changing for going on a decade now, so hopefully with heavyweight rugby director Hein Kriek and Drikus Hoffman in support roles, College can aim build a bit of continuity.
15 Waylon Murray Kearsney Westville Director of Sport Westville The former Bok centre replaced stalwart Keith Thompson who had been such a great servant to the College before retiring during 2021. Big shoes to fill!
16 Bart Schoeman Garsfontein Pro Rugby Agent Head of Sport As a former Golden Lions recruiter, Schoeman played a key role behind the scenes and his player acquisitions contributed to the success Johan Ackermann went on to enjoy during his time in charge at Ellis Park.
17 Christiaan Gouws Oos-Moot Voortrekker (Beth) Head of Sport Grey College Gouws led Beth Vorries to the Wesgrow title but due to the economic impact of Covid, he unfortunately had to part ways with the Griffons based school. He will add good value in Pretoria.

  1. Welcome back Beet. Lets hope for a good Noord/Suid, Wildeklawer and Virsekerbeker.

Some interesting appointments, some rediculous ones, and some predictable ones.
