@Tang: Please be assured that there was no breaching of any headmaster’s agreement. Though it was sad to lose such a talented player, Okuhle left Westville following an unsavory incident that prompted disciplinary action from the school.
@Van @ Star – Are you saying Okuhle Siyeni has left Westville and gone to Jeppe? He left Dale in 2018 and went to Westville for the 2019 season. Now he has left Westville and moved to Jeppe for the 2020 season!
If this is true it is more than alarming. He is a professional rugby player!
Last year on 15 July 2019, @Beet wrote a piece called fortunes of the matric movers. Siyeni was mentioned in the article.
If Siyeni plays for Jeppe in 2020, I would suggest it is a serious breach of the headmasters agreement.
@Beet: Good idea!!! More refs should do it. Will limit the bad coach behaviour.
@Wonder: I somehow believe that you punish the coach more if you give a player in his team a red card for the coach’s bad behaviour. Then he moves into the firing line of his own community for his own conduct as it has a direct impact on how his team performs on the field.
@Beet: Your comments reminded me about an incident last year, the ref gave the coach a red card, the game was stopped and everbody saw the coach walking accross the field to the pavilion. Unfortunately,it seems that the coach was not really ashamed.
@Djou: I agree, nothing more irritating than a coach yelling from the side all game long.
There is a few i know of…
@Playa: I don’t know Mr Wesson, but I like him – judging from that attitude.
@Beet: @McCulleys Workshop: Saw a pretty awful example Saturday at Loftus. Coach throwing hands in the air when referee gives penalty against his team, shouting at the ref, swearing loudly and thus making sure that all the spectators can hear (his team’s reserves next to him). Eventually his team lost by 3 points. It was so shameful that some spectators moved away from him and the other coaches.
@Beet: Hi Beet, I agree wholeheartedly with the second half of your post. There’s no point in singling out a game or school, but it happens consistently. I heard calls being shouted at the ref on Sat and thought, jeepers this linesman is getting involved, until I realized it was only the petrol attendant who should have only been topping up the water and checking the oil! I agree that schools should address it.
There was an interesting and humorous moment in the HTS Middelburg-Boland Landbou match partly due to the way the commentator communicated it. The match was heading towards a tense finish. 12-man HTSM were 24-12 up towards the end of the match and were awarded a penalty in kickable range. At the same time their 12 was in considerable pain due to what looked like an elbow injury. The medic races onto the field in the direction of the injured player but does not gear down as gets closer to the youngster. Instead he motors on towards the huddle of players further away where he passes on team instructions and the kicking tee, while the injured centre has to sort himself out, which fortunately he did.
It was such a tense finish to that game, that I doubt either set of supporters watching could have enjoyed that moment but in retrospective now, maybe they can see the humour in it. But it also points where the priorities lies when push comes to shove and there’s a game on the line.
@Playa: While male school teachers that can coach sport seem to become more valued and marketable by the day and can probably sign off on coaching duties on a Thurs after practice, these days SBR has a professional component that does not enjoy the same kind of marketability to it as well. I interact with a number of contracted coaches. For many the job security isn’t always great and their assessments are often based on the scoreboard. It’s not that easy to find suitable work in the industry or move up the ladder. If they had to say their work ends on Thursday, come Sunday chances are they’d be without work.
Personally I don’t have a problem with the coach who wants to ensure that the players are following his instructions and playing patterns during matches, especially if he’s going to be held 100% accountable after the final whistle.
Where I do take exception is when schools condone the behaviour of assistant coaches that patrol the sidelines and do their best to influence each and every decision the referee makes, often throwing in unwelcomed comments when decisions do not go their way. That sort of gamesmanship is contrary to good values taught at schools and should have no place in SBR. Referees should be empowered to penalise a team when a coach interferes in his officiating and bin the captain if the unwelcomed comments keep coming. Headmasters should also act against such characters.
@Bush:
@Herakles: Congratulations Welkom Gim! It also put the Menlo/Gim game in perspective.
At least Menlo learned that you don’t travel to Welkom unprepared and in the same week of trials.
All the best for the rest of the season!
@Playa: The right attitude from Mr Wesson. Now days the coach introduces himself as Coach, Captain, and Kicker.
@McCulleys Workshop: From my angle I though he was the HC Sangoma as it looked like he was throwing bones every time the Ref made a call for GW. Then I realized it was his HC Cap. At one stage he got better distance kicking his cap, then HC oke did with the ball for touch. Forget Monty Python.
@tzavosky: That’s very unfortunate. And we are seeing more and more of this. I was commentating for SSL yesterday at the Brackenfell Sports Day. I was so annoyed by the amount of coaching staff interference. Sport at school level is supposed to instill responsibility and decision making ability. What are kids learning when they have instructions shouted at them die hele tyd?
Mr Wesson used to tell us “My job as coach ends on Thursday gentlemen. You’re on your own on Saturday”
@Bush: And there I was thinkIng he was the medic!
@Playa: Yeah, I’m with you and Bush on this one, it irritates me when coaches constantly shout the calls from the sidelines.
That said, I thought about Beet’s question last night, and with SBR becoming more and more professional, we’re probably going to see more waterboys and physios running on to the field at every break, like at higher levels – perfect little robots in the making.
@Beet: Captain. Always the captain. It’s my belief that during game time the coaches are just spectators
@Herakles: Siyeni is a prop. Dodo is a center. Please do read carefully. I’m also not sure why you’re being so defensive aggressive.
@Herakles: Shame, you are forgiven.
Don’t take it so seriously – we all make mistakes.
@Beet: It’s quite an easy answer that Beet, it’s SBR play it as you see it. How is the Captain ever going to learn if he can’t make his own decision, even if it’s the wrong one. That’s what school is about learning and life skills. Come and watch a Hilton game, coaching staff on the field giving skills techniques to the kids during play. It’s more humorous than watching The Life of Brian
@Dixon’s: There was a similar match deciding moment in the Northwood – Maritzburg College game. With about 3-4 minutes to go, Northwood brought on the heat and forced a penalty inside the College 22 literally in front of the posts. It would have been a tap over kick to lead 17-14. Instead they opted to take a quick tap and go to the left where they had scored the equalising try a few minutes earlier. Fateful mistake. Possession was turned over and they were unable to create another point scoring opportunity. NW captain is their 9 who took the quick tap.
Earlier in the half, College experienced something similar. An assistant in a red top jogged on with the kicking tee, only to watch the ball being hoofed into touch on the far side as he approached the penalty spot. It would have been a more difficult shot at goal than the NW opportunity.
Anyways the ordeal leads me to ask again about who should ultimately be charged with making those kinds of decisions for kickable penalties, the captain or the coach???
@Herakles: I watched one half of Welkom Gim vs Grey College last week. Grey were on fire but the Gimmies can definitely jol. When they attack they can open up just about any defence hence the 33 points against Grey.
Testimony Dodo went from Hudson Park to Dale to Westville to Welkom Gim I believe. Last year he played flank mainly for the Westville 2nd XV. This year he’s an inside centre mainly because the WGim loose-forward trio of Pienaar, Mingo and Morabe are outstanding.
@Herakles: Glad for you and Gim.The last couple of years Gim treathen to have good teams but somehow fall away during the season. Will be something to see another top 10 team from the STAAT!
@Djou: A surprisingly paternalistic response to a bona fide question.
As already pointed out – I do not know the players. From Star’s post it seems as if Dodo is a prop and from Van’s response it seemed as if he went to DHS. My humble and unqualified apology if I failed to execute a proper empirical study of the contents of the blog before airing my ignorance.
I would hate to be earmarked as an ignoramus be an esteemed blogger like yourself.
To add to earlier my posts – the game between Wekom Gimnasium and Helpmekaar (which I attented) was played in Welkom earlier today. The referee was appointed by the Griffons Referees Society, the referee incidentally being a former learner at Welkom Gimnasium.
I – and many of the other spectators – were of the opinion that he did not have a especially happy afternoon. He made a number a glaring errors. Furthermore he punished Welkom Gim mercilessly at specifically at the breakdowns, resulting in a stop-start match that struggled to get any margin of flow. (I am always amazed if the dominant team is deemed to have made 80-90% of the errors! I do not know whether the referee was being evaluated by Referee Society or whether the spectators were simply to far away from the play to spot the infringements. All I now is that he will received a glowing report from Helpmekaar.)
Be that as it may, Welkom Gim had – due to the calls of the referee – very little possession in specifically the first half. However, when they managed to get their hands on the ball, they with all due respect overshadowed the backline of Helpmekaar.
With the latter lying very shallow on the defense, Welkom Gim simply chipped over their heads with their speedsters chasing. In that way they scored two tries in the first half with at least three tries going begging from the 5-6 times they managed to get possession. (Credit has however to be given to the scramble defense of Helpmekaar – by default of which the scoreline could have been really embarrassing.)
I read a post from another blogger last week that said that he was impressed with Helpmekaar’s structure jnsofar as their defensive and attacking ability were concerned. I cannot share the sentiment. As already pointed out, they were badly exposed whenever the ball were kicked behind them.
Furthermore, they were ineffective on the attack. The only time the defense of Welkom Gim was broken was about two minutes from full time when a dubious penalty was awarded to Helpmekaar after a kick-off and they took a quick tap about 15 meters from the goal line and scored. By then the game was long done and dusted.
Helpmekaar was dominant in the scrums. Welkom Gim lost their first two balls in the line-outs but thereafter they secured good ball from that facet. They also managed to steal a ball or two in the line-outs.
Welkom Gim must have conceded between 30-40 penalties at the breakdowns. It is thus very difficult to make any sense of that facet of the play. It did keep Helpmekaar in the game.
The line-kicking of Helpmekaar was very average. At crucial times in the game they messed up important kicks. On three instances they did not manage to clear penalties which resulted in Welkom Gim running back at them. On two instances they kicked penalties behind the corner flag – relieving huge potential pressure on Welkom Gimnasium. (The wind was mild, about 3-4m/s)
Granted, Helpmekaar really tried hard until full time. However, I do not think that they have the pace and skill in their backline to again end up in the top ten schools in 2020. Their forwards will compete against any other pack, with specifically their no 7 flank being impressive.
For Welkom Gim, Keke Morake and Calla Pienaar were outstanding. The team’s tackling in general were ferocious. There are a number a very quick linebreakers in the backline but I do not know the boys by name and cannot point out the stars.
Wekom Gim’s skills are very impressive and the second last try was the result of a 35 meter pass right into the hands of a fellow-player. I have rarely seen the equivalent of that at schoolboy-level. Their Achilles heel might be their scrums, but knowing Roean Bezuidenhout – he is much more concerned about the general skills of props rather than of their brute scrumming ability.
Pardon me if I seem to be gloating. In a part of the country where the local government is as incompetent as they get and the local economy is as poor as it gets, it puts a rare smile on the face of some of its people that a local school could beat a regarded and respected competitor like Helpmekaar.
Nobody knows when this feat will be repeated.
Due to COVID-19 it may even be one of the last schoolboy rugby games of 2020!
@Herakles: Try reading a book from chapter 1 and don’t start in the middle.
Go to the top of this thread and look at the conversation between Van and Star.
Firstly, I have to admit that the last time I had any intimate knowledge regarding the workings of the Renaissance of rugby at Welkom Gim was in 2015 – which now appears to be almost a lifetime ago. There are about three to four of the current first team members that I can recall from their U/14 days at Welkom Gim.
My son the was the tighthead prop of that team that went on to win the Shimla Cup in 2015. After that I still followed the progress of the team.
I assume that you have some factual base for your contention regarding Dodo. I would be interested in knowing the basis for your contention – not that it would in any way influence the reality of schoolboy rugby in the South African landscape.
@Playa:I couldn’t understand all the handling errors but I think the ball was to scared to be handled by the boys in case it got Corona.
That is now if you you take the extinct flightless bird that lived in Mauritius that was extinct by 1662 out of the context of SBR.
@Herakles: Your 12 according to the team list. Seems like a journeyman.
@Herakles: die span wat Gim gaan onderskat die jaar gaan sy rieme styf loop
@<a href="#comment-192287"Who is Dodo?
@McCulleys Workshop: So McLeod-Henderson earned his million today? Hilton had a secret plan. “We’ll let you smash us for a few years. Then suspend relations due to you being too professional. And then bring back the fixture, and viola! We’re back!”
What a weekend of rugga! Dale losing to Muir, Grey PE losing to Brandwag and Glenwood losing to Hilton. It’s the coronavirus I tell you
@Van: Dodo is at Welkom Gim
2 key moments of the Glenwood v Hilton game.
1. Glenwood just scored a pen to go up 10 – 7 with a few minutes to play. Patting themselves on the back and not focusing on the game. Hilton ready at the line. Hilton forwards stacked left. Glenwood forwards daydreaming on the other side of the field. Hilton kick of and get the ball back deep in glenwoods half where they stayed for the remainder of the match and ultimately scored to win.
2. Glenwood under big pressure on their own try line. Scrum, Glenwood ball. Instead of hoofing it into McDonald Road. They decide to crash it up with 12. Lose the ball and keep themselves under pressure that hilton would eventually capitalise on.
@star: Alan took his own advice. Howzit Star, u16 A was also a turn up for the books HC won 22 – 3
1st game was very evenly contested although a scrappy affair with poor handling. GW had a number of opportunities with the last pass often going awry. The HC kicking game needs help and the ball boy behind the posts a haircut! It will be interesting to read Beets write up, however both sides produced journeymen performances, nothing more.
Westville 47 DHS 7 Good day all round for me. Well done Hilton. It must be decades since we last won on Dixon’s. Where is Grassy when you need him to confirm such stuff?
Hilton 14 – 10 Glenwood
Welkom Gimnasium 35 – Helpmekaar 7
@Skywalker: Yeah I think there are 3 interesting games here in KZN.
For Westville vs DHS it will be Ruan Lombard’s debut as a head coach and that might add to the unknown about DHS. There no.8 is a super athlete on the field and they have a few other guys there with decent experience. Westville have the potential to have a cracking backline. I don’t see their first choice 9 from last year listed and perhaps much will depend on how their 10 performs to get the line moving. I wanna say Ville are favourites but having watched a couple of these more recent games, the results have gone against what’s on paper. Last year was a good example and that DHSOB game on Van Heerden’s was insane for the number of chances the home team created and did not convert into points, allowing Ville to win aided by the exact opposite – a couple of well taken tries. So complacency for the favourites to win has to be guarded against.
At Northwood, I’m sure the Knights pack will be up a notch on fitness and they will be a force to be reckoned with. Weather they can do a bit more exciting stuff with frontfoot ball is possibly where the challenge lies. I thing the battle in the scrums of Matonga vs Cele will be a highlight. Are College adequately prepared is the question to be answered on their side. The core of this team was really good at u16A level and they have the added benefit of having Cameron Frazer, the coach from u16A in 2018 as 1st XV head coach now (2nd season for him). With Halstead seemingly out of the picture for Glenwood, it might clear the path for Goedeke start the season as KZN CW favourite at 10. He has two nice players around him at 9 and 12 but can they step up as a team going wide or dominating up front? Not sure yet. History says College to win for sure. More competitive NW will have other ideas for sure.
The match of the day is probably Glenwood vs Hilton. Glenwood without three dependables in Henk Gouws, Hulk Khuzwayo and Sikholise Nanto up front definitely weakens them in that dept. It looks like Hilton might be without a 1st choice prop as well. The beauty of this match may be in the contrasting styles. Under Derek Heiberg, Glenwood try to play that looser Grey College style of speeding up the game involving good handing and interplay and it generally catches slower less fit defences out. However the bit I know about BMH as Hilton coach is that he thrives on preparing his side to produce disciplined rock solid defence as well as physicality up front – and Glenwood generally don’t enjoy the latter to the extent that it sometimes reverberates through the team and otherwise dangerous backs lose their confidence a bit. Hilton is another of the KZN teams that does not offer the high gear quick formation counter-attacking style – you might even describe them as 1D in backline action. They preparations for the season a bit off with the practice match last week being cancelled. It might count against them later on in the match.
@Van: Yes its the same one and only Stoney. When he puts his mind to it, he is a really good player.
@Van: Dodo is now playing at no 12 for Welkom Gim
@Skywalker: This backline has the potential to cause havoc this season, provided they get quality ball from upfront. The only boys back in the starting eight are Xego and Phakathi.
I am not familiar with the DHS team at all. I don’t think they will be anywhere near as potent as 2019 definitely not 2018.
2020 will be an interesting season.
So almost an all KZN backline for WV, wow and some in the forwards as well. Should be a great year for them.
Any views on the DHS team you are up against?
Also no talk about Hilton but based on their 1st XV and u16A last year (and not sure if any new recruits), they should be contesting for high honours this year. The game against Glenwood will be huge i would imagine!
@De-flea the Dog: Good player. Strong and fast but needs work on his passing off both hands. Having been a 8 for so long has not helped but if he wants to take it further he will have to get that aspect of his game up to standard.
@Van: Mkhize, ex Glenwood, is a machine.
@Strepie: ja kannie meer hoogskop en storm nie
@boerboel: Dit gaan weer klippe kou wees more.
Daardie ligte by Porterville is blykbaar opgegradeer.
@De-flea the Dog: allegedly u16
@Monnas15: ja hjs baie jonk-goeie kans
mag die beste span wen
@star: Both left. Siyeni to Jeppe and I heard Dodo to DHS, but is not in the team, so I may be wrong.
McLaren did the same last year when he changed Beavan from centre to loose forward and the other way around with Mkhize.
Quite a potent backline for Westville with 3 returning CW players(Nkonki,Nkomo and Mkhize) and an Academy player. The flyhalf is also the talented GK rep.A bit surprizing to see E.Hooker who played GK on the wing now at flank. I wonder where the SA Schools prop O. Siyeni and T. Dodo are.
Is that Stoney Stenekamp that was at DHS last year in the Drostdy team?
Hoop Monnas kan geskiedenis maak, sien uit !!! sterkte aan albei spanne !!!
Reviewed the Glenwood team again, only new name to me is Roger Heath at centre, otherwise it’s quiet a young one with 6 x u16a’s from last year and 8 1st/2nd team from last year. Three of the backs were u16a
Glenwood seem to be missing two stars, Henk Gouws and Nanto….not sure why…
@Beet, out of interest what are your thoughts on the KZN team lists?
