Got to catch some of the rugby yesterday at Jeppe really young team and lots of grit by them to man up against a better conditioned Kempies team. Man for man we were out gunned but skills wise I think we shaded them slightly especially in the backline and that proved to be the difference.

Kempton Park also made some bizarre decisions towards the end of the game drop goal attempt as our boys looked out breath helped us rally in defence.

In all good tough game to start with and gives me hope for the upcoming season.

Although tons of our boys dropped like flies towards the end of the game hence the rally by Kempton Park. We might be fielding our second side for the game against Saints on the weekend.

Pity I will not be able to see it.

Vleis…Jeppe had some Irish luck that evening against Menlo. I am sure Jeppe would have good side as the season rolls on. Take nothing from the result as it stands.

@sewes: Kempies had the advantage of better match practice, but Jeppe should have been fresher as they did not play on Sat. That said, Kempies finished the stronger.

I didn’t expect a good (by their recent standards) Jeppe 1st team this year…but it looks like I might be proved wrong. Still very early days though. In theory, the Jeppe v Saints game this weekend should be close, as Saints won narrowly when they met as u16s. That said, with home field advantage and two good results in tough games v Menlo (draw) and Kempies (win) under the belt, I think that Jeppe are firm favourites.

The spoils can then be shared with those rough okes from down south. If I don’t do the trek then the DHS Hilton game looks like a great proposition.

@Greenman: Kearsney has played three games so far this season to get their combinations right and their side firing before the start of the domestic season and the KERF. I’m sure there’s a reason why GW hasn’t, but it would have been worthwhile.

Currently their results are mixed so I cannot peg their strength. For example. Menlo beating Valia. Valia losing to Kempies. Nelspruit losing to HTS. Nelspruit not convincing against KHS. HTS not highly rated. Monnas, Garsies, EG standing out. Which other two Tuks teams, mentioned earlier, will make up the top 5?

I believe that after this weekend we can start reflecting on the past 2 weeks. Is Valia, Kempton, Florida, Menlo, Klerksdorp, HTS Middelburg, Rustenburg and Nelspruit all in the same league and if so which league? EG vs Garsies. Both teams missing a key player (Saru camp) for the weekend. Eldo vs Monnas is now a 50/50 game I believe. Will Eldo take the oppertunity. Affies missing 2 players and Helpies missing Mark. A win for Helpies will but the Mark debate to rest. Lets wait and see

@Greenman: re your last comment, having the depth GW does with returning 1st and 2nd team players (including CW etc) and a strong group of u16’s (including GK players) coming through to contest for places, is a huge advantage for a long season, however it will take Mclaren some time to settle on combinations, not really a luxury you have with KERF fast approaching.

@beet: Hi Beet. I am not sure if Hilton has had any games prior to Saturday but they looked well prepared and solid in attack and defense. Line out balls were mastered and their backline fully of running. They definitely did not look out like a 2 tier team. I don’t know what they bought but if any money well spent. Met one of the ex- helpies dad’s. Simple response as to why Hilton. Hilton looks better on a CV and a chance not to miss. as far as GW was concerned, open rugby, no game plan just show me what you got. McLaren obviously want to let everyone in the mix have there day out to shine. Resulted in a lot of individual play which cost the team effort but that was what it unfortunately was all about. Lot of nerves to resulting in unnecessary fumbles. The big boys from GW did not play i.e JJ, Laubscher, JC and Conan. They currently have “small’ injuries and the coach did not want to worsen it. These guys are pivotal with their experience and physique going forward. All should be ready for DHS day. Summing up the day would be to grant Hilton cudos for playing flawless rugby and GW testing what they have got. GW however will have to get their squad identified asap as it is late in the day already.

@Wonder: Ons O/16A span ‘n goeie span.

@Bush: Which side was that? I remember saying in Jan that Hilton would surprise a few sides this year and I copped it from two Ex SBR aficionados in green. Not sure why the green guys were so offended by that comment. I would like to watch GW against a high tempo side and it seems the School – GW game is shaping up for a hum dinger.

@Greenman: As long as you didn’t roll your boerewors. Ja I thought it was stupid that the ref gave the GW player a yellow card. It was trials not a test match. I think it’s stupid to play the trials like that, it ends up like a proper game. Each team should get a fair shot at playing all their structures and combinations. Should share the possession 50/50. What’s the point of trials if you can’t do anything as the one side is dominating.

Anders as teen Grey.

@Gungets Tuft: Hi GT…JJ never played, neither did JC Conradie; Conan le fleur; Eddie Laubscher and a couple of other players.

Hilton looked very organized, especially on the ground and Glenwood looked somewhat unstructured. But I don’t think they played their strongest combinations in any one chukka and I also think that this was their first full contact session. The GW team has been training hard and I wouldn’t right them off….not yet.

@sewes: Die Kaapse skole sal daar wees! So ek is verkeerd oor of diamanveld se krag, affies se krag, of garsies se krag? Ek maak myself nou so deurmekaar ek voel somme na krag! My vriende daar is maar stil!

Was heerlik laasjaar by Garsfontein.

Dis vir my baie hartseer dat kloof se rugby so vinning so baie agteruit gegaan het. Dis amper soos centurion. Hulle was nog in 2012 BAIE sterk. 5 jaar later en dinge lyk anders. Maar julle weet wat julle probleem is. Ek weet net nie hoe julle dit gaan uitsorteer nie. Lyk my nie Paul Roos wou julle help nie, en my affies vriende sê my hulle gaan julle ook nie help nie.

More more manne, en moontlik dames!

Lyk my so paar spanne steek reeds vroeg hande op vir moeilikheidmakers in ‘n goeie sin! My vraag is maar net hoekom daar gaan speel?

Verseker a force to be reckoned with!

Kan dalk so een of twee spanne skrikmaak! Transvalia verloor teen kempton? Bietjie van ‘n upset/shocker!?

Garsfontein?

Gaan lekker hard wees.

@Rugbyrealis: Even if they do apply that rule, surely it means a lead of 50+, as why would anyone want to stop a game when one team gets to 50 v 49? If so, then I suspect that GCB’s lead only exceeded 50 in the dying minutes of the match anyway.

The Hilton vs House is going to be a great contest. House were brilliant yesterday against Clifton. Amazing to see such skill from boys that only started playing rugby last week.
From what I saw in the friendly between Hilton and GW. I doubt that that fixture will be reignited. Hilton were all over GW so much so that GW chose to fight rather than show off their skills. Maybe fighting is their skill????.
Westville vs House next week is going to be a hell of a game. Well done to all the boys. Glad to see them come through injury free?????

@beet: Angelo was outstanding. He only played the first half but scored 2 tries and made another. 6 flank AJ Rossouw and lock Janko Swanepoel stood out in the forwards. Set pieces were solid but passing/linking still looked rusty at times but to be expected for first game.

Second team beat Kasselsvlei first team 43-0. Was a wonderful evening weather wise and great to play at Durbell. Even spotted a foto of my old man in the club house of when he was part of the 1973 Bellville first team.

@Die Ken: @OudUppie: Agreed that is an awesome backline.

It’s very difficult for even the well organised SBR defences to cope with swift accurate backlines and I’ve seem a few big powerful centres cause havoc as well.

I would say that if you had to choose between a dominant pack or an explosive backline at SBR level, go with the latter especially if the conditions underfoot are good. This option switches around as the players progress towards senior rugby where it’s seems like a no-brainer to take the dominant pack over anything else.

I also hope that our coaches have the willingness to correct the weaknesses through selection we all so glaringly saw. As Laevelder mentioned the first 20 minutes was an absolute shocker, and if it wasn’t for van der Bank’s accurate boot we would have had bigger problems.

@Valkie: From my experience, there is normally a markable difference in performance between game 1 and game 2 for an SBR team. I recommend that a school has some sort of match conditions practice game ahead it’s first regular season match unless that first game is a relatively comfortable one to win going in cold.

    By Nelspruit:

    Pietersburg (3) vs Florida (3) (Plekke 9 – 13)

Weet jy watter groep speel kwartfinale by Nelspruit en watter by Garsfontein?

The Rooibulle got a good win in Nelspruit today. 25-22. Big about turn from that understrength warm-up vs Transvalia.

@Riempies:Soos Cappie sê dit was hackers. Ek moet net bietjie ‘stir’ in Spiesie se afwesigheid. Soos genoem julle game teen Eldo gaan n goeie aanduiding wees waar beide spanne staan en nou het jul tuisveld voordeel weggegee.
@Cappie: Die Witbulle se proewe is klaar.

@Cappie: Al julle spelers beskikbaar teen Diamantveld? Glo julle 2 Saru seuns nie beskikbaar teen Helpies nie. Sien Helpies gaan met n baie verswakte span teen julle speel. Glo 8 1ste keuse seuns nie beskikbaar nie. Mark, Mark, Mark, Mark, Mark, Mark, Mark en Mark. As David nou ontrek speel julle teen Helpies se 2des    8-O

@Hooit: Dink daar more al n paar mooi games. Monnas vs Welkom Gim, Gim seker sterkte in Goudvelde tans. Menlo vs Jeppe behoort goed te wees. Dan EG vs Voortrekker (Beth) Voortrekker altyd sterk daar in Oos Vrystaat.

Sterkte aan almal more.

Albei sal moet wen. Transvalia verder as Menlo.
