@Gungets Tuft: yep, not quite the same except greedy parents. You can’t really blame the schools that take them though. Also that sort of friendship is built in many derbies, thank goodness ?

@Grasshopper: No similarity except for ambition on the part of parents trumping the fact that kids need to be taught about teamwork, comradeship, loyalty as well.

I’m over the soapbox stuff but the lightie might be worth following for the next 5 years to see how he goes. For his sake I hope it works out, there aren’t going to be many schools lining up to offer him a spot.

This morning the PBHS kid that we hosted for 5 years from 2011, and who hosted my son on the return for 5 years, visited us in Durban with his folks and younger brother who is still at PBHS. Brothers from a different mother, that’s what gets built by looking at the big picture, it’s a pity that some don’t get to see that.

@GreenBlooded: Agree 100%. If the parents have acted like that what sort of expectations has the boy got.

Perhaps it will end up like the spot filled when my lightie was in second form. Kid came in at 1/2 year, ended up 1st cricket and hockey, KZN athlete. Good at anything he tried, he just didn’t have enough time in his day to try everything.

    @Gungets Tuft:

Ja – lesson to be learned here for schools. If you don’t have some form of deposit from parents (which you don’t get on a 100% scholarship) then you run the risk of this happening.

What I understand is that this kids parents have been horse trading the kid to a number of schools trying to get the best deal. Glenwood signed him in July apparently – it remains to see if he arrives there. Westville also involved in the bun fight and perhaps some others. Can’t blame any of the schools involved but disgraceful and selfish for this family to deny other deserving boys a chance. It’s not a simple matter of taking the next on the list either. School starts in 3 days – boys will have bought uniforms, paid deposits etc at other schools. What a stuff up.

For me, the lesson here is if a school comes across these human traffickers in future, cancel the deal and have nothing more to do with them. If it doesn’t happen on day 1, it will happen at some time in the future when a better deal comes along. Better to invest the time and energy into a boy that will stick it out.

@McCulleys Workshop: Those are the announced ones. Every school has the others, the silent bursaries where companies and trusts sponsor them. Such is life, imagine any of the other schools in KZN playing with that sort of cash. College could have bursaries for 1/2 of their intake 8-O 8-O

One empty bed at College. Scholarship kid who’s name was already on his locker simply didn’t pitch up. Calls to track him down say he’s been offered “something better” than the full College deal. Be interesting to see where he surfaces. Someone on the waiting list will be moved up, bummer though, the new kid will miss the first week where so much gees is built.

@Gungets Tuft: Morning GT, I’m not sure Hilton have offered more scholarships this year than in previous years, however with the calibre of coaching staff they have employed, they will want to ensure they have good talent to produce results. I think they could pull off some surprise wins this year and prove to be very competitive.

Just been pointed out to me that Hilton celebrates their 150th in 2022. Could explain the buying spree this year, I suppose we can expect the same next year if they are determined to have a good sporting year. It would explain the big money being spent on specialist coaches and sports admin. I’ve added up close to R3 million a year if you add just the rugby, cricket and hockey coaches. That’s benchmarking on what BMH was earning in his last stint, and info on one of the other coaches.

Hilton are playing with proper money in their sport. Certainly adds an edge to the decision to pull out of Glenwood fixtures for professionalism. I know it’s already been said, but when you do the numbers it makes your eyes water.

The 2nd team pulverized the Monnas scrum and that front row should have played 1st most of the season. But credit to Monnas they were immense and better prepared. Also more hungry. @Grasshopper aka Alan Morrissey: Knock yourself off with your assumptions. Annually, I am made aware on this blog, of the player movement away from GW. I’m not assuming it’s poaching, and we are talking post grade 8. The only reason I am aware of it is due to yours and other GW suporters posts, so it’s not exactly state secret stuff. I am not aware of any post grade 10 talented rugby players leaving House, Hilton, DHS, Westville, Kearsney, GB, Kes, College, etc. Maybe, as I suggested, it is due to the fact that you advertise it, or maybe it is due to other reasons.

@McCulleys Workshop: Movement is very prolific everywhere, you just hearing about the Glenwood ones. Poaching/Buying whatever you want to call it has infested school boy rugby, rightly or wrongly and kids are being traded ‘by their parents’ all the time. Long gone are the days of being loyal unfortunately. Especially at ex ModelC schools where families are not as wealthy and they looking for the best option/deal for their kids. I think the economy/future prospects in SA plays a big part of this. Families know the opportunities are scarce so they hoping their kids can get a professional contract and make money that way….it’s sad but true. But I know you prodding the beast to get a reaction…

@Roger: That 08 team was good the 09 was frightening nearly relegated us to Wednesday Fixture pummelled our poor boys 69 – 10 scenes of Kes old boys hosting Teddy bear tea parties in their in-goal while their merciless team ran in try after try after try still haunts me.

2012 was Marx’s matric year the seen of him and his other SA schools teammate running onto the field 20 mins into the game and our boys savaging them is still one of the nicer memories I have …… that and the win in 2002 when Motsumi and George showed true heart won the return fixture against Kes during the last game of the rugby season of kes’s centenary year.

I still say that 2002 Kes game gave Jeppe its first black Headboy KL Motsumi in 2003. For all intensive purposes the rowing club captain would have been headboy in 03 had it not been for the miraculous exploits of one Mr Motsumi on the rugby field that fabled June Saturday. What a top lad hope he is doing fantastically.

( See @Tang even when we were losing we still made decisions based on the rugby field )

    Its not a new thing.

@Greenman: huge pity about Terblanche he would have given depth at lock & loose forward. Great for Jooste. Heard O’Neill left too, massive loss. Might struggle at loose forward now…

@Ringo: maybe you right – the fixture will probably resume next year when the twins have matriculated. As far as I understand it – KES and Spilhaus parted amicably. Almost ten years as coach – time for a change. He coached some great teams though – 08, 09, 11, 12.

@Grasshopper aka Alan Morrissey: Thanks for the heads up! He has been very unlucky so far i.e injuries(benched GK), stiff competition in his position last year but I am sure he will reach his goal and achieve this year(God willing). Bit older and much bigger. Only turned 17 last year November which could have been a factor as well.

@Tang: I will say for many years to come I went to Jeppe when we went winning rugby matches and I still thought it was a magnificent school.

However I must say Boys seem happier now though now that the school is winning and its easier to collect school fees these days then back when we were not winning and the headmaster’s son went Boys High, it was a terrible time back then.

The school was not bad it was just hard to keep facilities, infrastructure and teaching staff at the right levels as the school was virtually insolvent and could not run itself.

Wining rugby games has helped fundraising efforts and raised interest in the school.

But in no way defines Jeppe’s worth as a school.

@Roger: I think Parktown was heavily aggrieved by the commentary out of Kes in regard to the incident with the twins. I definitely think that them beating us and the we beating Kes last year stirred the pot a lot further; thoughts of what may have been if they had those boys. I definitely think that you play each in future though just not while those Kids are on the field for their own safety I think.

Also from what little I know which is mainly hearsay Parktown is aggrieved on a matter of principle and not the specifics of this situation.

@Grasshopper aka Alan Morrissey: I gather you mean football….. you should see all the pictures in the Payne Hall of the soccer exploits of Jeppe we were great at it. It was a hard decision to swop codes hence you see that is why we were one of the last to take up the oval ball which has come to engulf the psyche of the school.

Ringo, I liked your post about Jeppe. I read the article some time back – splendid.

I have one comment. Attending school is about getting a rounded education. The emphasis is on education. Sport is a privilege, not a right.
There is still way too much emphasis on sport and sporting results from many of the top Boys Schools. We need to stop defining schools worth by the results of the first rugby team.

@Ringo: The thing is most of the ex ModelC schools are great, they have passionate OB’s (like us) ensuring that. The point is I cannot help the passion I have for Glenwood and if it brings more haters then so be it. In fact Glenwood and Jeppe have quite a bit in common, similar demographics, age etc and both were never considered top of the pile, but in the past 20 years both have risen to become more respected allround. I salute both schools…

Happy new year everybody and best wishes to all expect Bog he has God on his side and does not need my good wishes with my head in the sand.

Well done to the class of 2016 and especially the top performers!!!!! Let no one tell you your A does not mean a anything

I do not speak for everybody but certainly as one who’s last straight A average was in the third term of std 8 and before the old people stand up and fight it was still called std 8 in 2002 “I think that is the last year it was called standard, Ironically according to the all knowing and all seeing BOG’S assistant in the UK Grassy; that by Grassy standrard time is a year before the standards fell     ” many many moons ago. I did okay at school and gone on to do alright in life after school so not bitter about marks at all.

But alas what is the purpose of my post…. Well it is for Grassy you make me stand with elitists well in my eyes any way ( Kes and college) but they are right move on buddy stop trying to throw shade on peoples achievements or making everything a comparison to Glenwood. Glenwood is a great school and if all schools in the townships and rural villages were similar to Glenwood we would be all living in utopia. Your insistence to be negative and then glenwoodize everything is bring the school more haters then admirers if you did not know….

For me I publicly, admired, and praised the fact that glenwood was able to arrest their perceived slip in the 90s to be great in all facets in the 00s and beyond, but now after after your taut on this blog I cheer every misstep that Glenwood make.

Some schools are just better at getting distinctions out of their boys others are not. If you are comparing Jeppe did not get a 100% matric pass it was probably some between 98%-99% and you know it is a great school today and will be great school for many years to come:

@Grasshopper aka Alan Morrissey: This is all opinion and not fact. Your opinion is not validated by the fact that you know where I live, where I worked 13 years ago and which mall is nearest to me. You project your world view onto modern kids. My family is not as large and connected as yours, but with a daughter who’s just graduated, a son studying, nephews and nieces at UCT, Stellies, UKZN, as well
As just having graduated from all those, none, I mean NONE, want a cushy lifetime job anywhere. From qualified yacht skippers chattering boats in the Seychelles, to currently living on yachts in Florida, teaching English in Cambodia and Dubai, they’re all keen on ripping the ring out of life, rather than strangling the life and joy out of everything. They don’t want jobs for life, they just want to finance the next thing.

You need to cheer the fuck up boyo, stop measuring everything, lift your head up and enjoy the moment. The world isn’t ending, not here, not in the U.K. with Brexit and the Tories, not in the USA with Trump and the Klu Klux Klan, or Syria. As mind boggling as you might find it, the world is generally in a better place than it’s ever been. If you look for fact, rather than confirmation of your fiction, you will get a hint that the sky is not falling. But if you want to say “I told you so”, not to worry, there are plenty of stories that will assist you to feel depressed.

There is much to be positive about in SA, but you can’t just ignore the negative. My cousin is the eternal optimist living in Umhloti, running his own IT business, earning pounds in SA and even he is shocked at the exodus. He is seeing friends & family leave every month. Now either they all dumb or they also seeing something not quite right. But hey it’s your choice to live in Durban North, pop down to La Lucia etc, the bubbles are bursting as we speak. Perhaps all family haven’t dragged themselves into the modern workplace where academics are a poor indicator of how someone will perform in real life. The young grads I come across are mostly excellent. They’re free thinkers, not drones. The modern workplace needs that. @Gungets Tuft: Genuine allrounders are a rarity, so well done to the kid. Nama Xaba, Head Boy, KZN rugby and 5As in 2015 was Glenwood’s last one. I believe he is doing well at UCT and playing Province Under19 rugga. That waterpolo playing Glenwood lock from about 2013 was another…forget his name..

One of the College kids I know that got 6 A’s was also a 1st team cricketer, picked for the KZN provincial schools side as well as the SA Colts cricket side. Superb all round boy, also played hockey with my boy. You just know that he’s going to crack it. Haven’t checked the others, cannae be assed, but checked this one because he’s a mate.

All rounders like that must have extraordinary levels of self discipline as well as life balance. Probably the type of people you would want to employ.

@GreenBlooded: Father Christmas works all night.
Sorry what I was trying to say is that there aren’t that many Primary Schools that are a main artery to relevant High Schools. For example Merchiston you would go to College. Now that Clifton offer up to grade 12 those kids won’t be fed to House or Hilton therefore the busary net for House and Hilton needs to widen in order to make up for those numbers. Then maybe bursaries on offer are for any applicant from any school. They not necessarily head hunted. Don’t kill me with your police issue AK 47, it’s just my thought nothing else.
Wishing you and your family a Blessed Christmas. I have one more run to carry out tonight and it’s the Highway Area. Hope your kids have been good. ????????

Maybe you need to define what you mean by ‘directly linked’. Highbury boys get automatic acceptance into Kearsney College. They share facilities. They are less than 5km apart. 80-90% of Highbury boys end up going to Kearsney – the balance mainly to Hilton or House. Some to College and Westville. The only way to link them more directly would be by mono-rail up Bothas Hill.

    Have a great Christmas!

@GreenBlooded: Thanks but those aren’t directly linked. For example DPHS use to feed DHS. Clifton Prep in the days use to feed Hilton and MHS. Same with regards to Merchiston and College. It seems there are no direct links to Primary Schools these days. Peace and Love Brother.

Your problem is that you cannot distinguish between your opinion and fact. You make your mind up about something and don’t let the facts get in the way of a good story-like there are no good government prep schools in JHB. Great story – patently untrue. @Gungets Tuft: funnily enough my wife’s cousin sent her boy to Glenwood from DPHS, no bursaries etc. He is not sporty, in grade 8 and in the debating team. I told her my concerns about Kershaw when she was doing her research and selection. She looked at Northwood, Westville & Glenwood. DHS wasn’t even on her list. She said to me Glenwood were streaks ahead on the Open Day and overall interaction with the parents. She lives in Innes Road so a schlep to drive, but she reckons it’s worth it!

@Alan Morrissey: DPHS is a Govt school in name only. The costs are almost double any other primary school in Durban and they attract the top kids – mostly due to sport. The monthly fees were R2635.00 on 2010-10-28 – the last fee I paid for my son. I think you can reckon on at least a 10% a year escalation since then, so it’s probably about R46,000 a year now. Other very good schools like Chelsea, Virginia, Northlands would be less than that.

As for the “smart parents” .. .bwahahha .. come on boet. You know well that Pete and John are Old Boys, their boys were always going to go to Glenwood.

The last really successful recruit from DPHS to DHS (as far as I know) was the 2010 year at DPHS and that was due to the efforts of a SuperMom who lobbied like crazy. About 65 boys from that year (out of about 90) went to DHS. The others went to Clifton (polo scholarships), Westville, Northwood (3 I think), Kearsney (quite a few), House, Hilton and College (5 – of whom only 2 stayed the course – others went to DHS, Clifton). I doubt much has changed in that demographic (I think College got quite a few more last year), still not too many smart parents sending their kids to Glenwood.

Most parents in Broadacres were sending their kids to Heronbridge, not my type of school. St Peters would have been my preference. Again, remember it’s an opinion, my one. You have never respected it so why get all hot and bothered by it?

@Alan Morrissey: who’s talking about KES? You made a sweeping statement that there were no good govt prep schools in JHB. That statement is utter bilge. Private versus Govt / model C is an entirely different debate so don’t try to now move the goalposts. I’m sure the governing bodies and staff of the above mentioned schools are thrilled that their hard work and commitment are so easily degenerated by some know it all who prior to my previous comment had probably not heard of any those schools.

You know what they say about idiots – every village has one and it looks like your little village on your little Island has just inherited village idiot numero uno

@Roger: cretin comments, in my view they were not up to scratch. Took advice from my sister who is ICT Director at Kingsmead, who advises many of the schools, including Gov ones. I lived in Broadacres for 18 months. You see it’s called my opinion. Just like I don’t think KES is that great either, academics are poor. They have very poor Maths & Science averages. Jeppe is worse. What PBHS might have got wrong in sport they certainly didn’t in academics….streaks ahead of the Joburg Govs….

Stop talking absolute rubbish – Bryandale, Bryanston, Bryanston Parralel Medium, Rivonia, Bryneven, Craighall, Parkview, IR Griffith, Northcliff, Sharonlea – and that’s just northern suburbs – do some ‘effin research before coming onto public blogs and talking shit mate. How long did you live in the outer northern suburbs for before taking the gap – all of 6 months? Have you even heard of any of the above mentioned prep schools? Christ you are a moron

@Rottweiler: your UK gov school stereotypes are all wrong boet, out in the counties most have up to 8 rugga fields, some more. No concrete in sight, except basketball or tennis courts. If they don’t have fields they will have full access to a local club with plenty fields. Our local gov high school St George’s of Harpenden where Itoje went has 6 rugga fields, more than most gov schools in SA…

@Playa: DPHS is traditionally DHS’s feeder school, similar school crests, BUT the private schools are aware of their sporting success so hunt their every year. What parent with a kid at gov school will say no to a silver spoon? Westville have hunted well there in the past decade too. Glenwood get the odd one with smart parents, like John Allan & Peter Manning. DHS have certainly tried enticing boys back there to a small degree of success. One could say DHS is the most transformed school in Durban, certainly representative of the population.

Jeez, what are you silver spooners on about. Christmas is amazing in the UK, proper. The way it should be. Yes, kids were on the list at St Peters, St Stithians & Brescia, but that is only because there aren’t any decent gov primary schools in JHB. Mc, let me tell you it certainly isn’t roses & violets in schools sports here, I’m pleasantly surprised. The standard is very high & the the stories about every kid winning for participating is bullocks. My local school produced Itoje, so we’ll set. Let me guess another 500 or so killed on the roads so far? Carnage every year…

@GreenBlooded: Why would it be illegal???? Many schools produce the list of busaries in the prize giving program.
GB I couldn’t give a rats arse about how schools go about recruiting people. As long as they look after the kids and don’t treat them like commodities. It’s easy to give the kid the bursary as the other parents pay for it. What about the kids welfare and I think that’s where those Model C/Government Schools miss the bus. Any way Love and Peace GB.

    @Bush:

Firstly – I think publishing lists of bursary recipients must be illegal in some respects. Kids names, how much etc. I wouldn’t want it published if it was my kid……..

Secondly, spent some time with a prominent Glenwood character a few days ago and asked him some frank questions. Some of his comments should be considered without the anti-Glenwood spectacles.

    1. All schools are recruiting in some form or another. Including Grey College, including Affies, including many schools who claim a holier than thou attitude. If you want details – happy to get them for you. Not going to publish them here. Not only in Grade 8 either. Why you and your fellow Glenwood haters focus on Glenwood’s efforts only warrants an explanation.

    2. What is the problem with locating a talented kid in a one-horse town where he will go nowhere, move him to the big stage, provide the required level of training, exposure, nutrition etc and let him achieve his potential. Curtis Jonas is a case in point. One has to wonder where he would be today had he not been noticed at that Cape Festival and stayed at Swellendam High School??

If you are against recruiting, ‘poaching’, ‘buying players’ or whatever you’d like to call it, you would focus on that as a concept and not on a particular school that does it – otherwise it just seems you have an axe to grind with that school no?

@Bush: to be honest I don’t care what schools do at grade 8 level, open field and fair game. If the school can afford to give out 250 bursaries then good luck to them. My issue comes in when schools don’t play others because they too professional and kids might get injured, when they also give out bursaries, have an elite program & pro coaches. Also. When they too recruit after grade8 eg Hilton. It’s farcical…just scared their record will be damaged.

@Bush: no I don’t, but they have a bursaries evening when all are announced, so completely open. There are around 50 given each year, not all 100%, in fact very few 100%. Also, most are for allrounders & there are around 15 for academics only. Some of these kids move on so freeing up bursaries for others up to grade 10. Westville give around 70 a year, 10 odd for swimming alone!

Is it smoke and mirrors but other schools are honest how they label their bursaries? I think most schools have Pro Coaches now days. Look at Pta Boys they have just signed a legend?

@McCulleys Workshop: funny enough vs House it’s been about 60/40 in the past 10 years & pretty close, only last year was a blow out. Whatever the result playing local opposition is first choice for me. Glenwood vs House & Hilton started in 1915 & 1920 respectively so 100 years of history. Whatever the issue is needs to be sorted, individuals are not bigger than the history…

@Alan Morrissey: Hopper, which one is it, for the good of school boy rugby in the province OR Glenwoods win/loss ratio having a chance to improve?
As is being discussed in the Noord Vaal thread, there are a range of reasons being offered for the rupture in their schools rugby and who will or won’t play who and why. At the end of the day it’s a democratic process and a school decides on its fixture list as it sees fit. As I have said before, in my opinion, it’s a pity MHS aren’t playing Glenwood next year and I hope it resumes in 2018. I also think their season is too short and would like to see them play more than 12 games in a season, that allows for only 9 games outside the Easter tournament. With 2 games against Hilton and an annual derby against St John, there are not enough dates to play all the other KZN sides. While they don’t decide their opponents at Easter, that is the arena for them to be tested outside the province.

@McCulleys Workshop: as a traditionalist, I want to see the Top8 in KZN playing each other. Otherwise it’s going to end up being 4 ‘elite’ schools that provide all the Craven Week players. Northwood, Hilton, DHS & House need to test themselves against the best in the province week in week out to improve down the line. Yes, House will have the odd great year like recently and unfortunately they didn’t really test themselves. St Charles & Clifton are not quite top 8 yet & George Campbell have gone off the boil. A Glenwood vs Hilton fixture is way more exciting than a Glenwood vs Menlopark, Framesby, Waterkloof or Monnas as there is history….just my opinion. For years Glenwood got pommeled by the older KZN schools like College, DHS, House & Hilton, why shouldn’t they have their chance to catch up on wins…

@Alan Morrissey: They have always given sports scholarships, and they are called that on their website, although they do have other open, closed etc which may be a little confusing as with MHS you don’t know what the criteria are. Mostly they look to provide allround scholarships and not just a single sports star. Luke Hitchings has achieved across the board at DPHS and is a brilliant academic.
Interestingly he looked at MHS and Kearsney, but was sold on Hilton prior to being awarded the Hilton all round scholarship. I guess at that age it is very tribal and the guys want to go where there mates are going.
MHS have no scholarships awarded to Prep, but for the last few years have tended to award a number of sports scholarships to Mercheston boys.
I’m still not sure why Hilton don’t play Glenwood, regardless of the heads statement. I also think it’s a pity that there seems to be a breakdown between some of the schools and Glenwood, is it just the roll of the dice this season or not. That being said I’m not convinced which option is better for KZN or the craven week side, either all sides playing each other as it historically always has been OR the stronger schools playing against the stronger sides from other provinces, where all their sides get to have a game without staggering etc.

@McCulleys Workshop: Yes, I am fully aware they give out scholarships but usually disguised under a name or called overall (incl Academics), not seen full blown sports ones previously and that many just for one school. This whole Glenwood are too professional is an excuse. They have a professional coach. Pathetic! Gary Teichmann needs to step in an say enough is enough, KZN schools should play each other for the good of the province. I mean Hilton are playing Affies first up at the Easter festivals, what is the difference between Affies and Glenwood? Affies usually far stronger, better and able to cause injury, as Hilton claim is another reason to not play Glenwood. If I was John Allan I would be trying to sort this out with Gary T…

As you know they have also attracted/poached players post grade 10, and they haven’t been exactly quiet about that either.
