@Playa: That fullback stood no chance
@Wyvern: Athi Halom’s try was insane!!!!
Great match by Kingswood!!!!

I was on the same flight as the team. It was for work. I was hoping to get a chance to go and watch them but I had to go quite far up North. I flew back yesterday.
Enjoy your time with the team and I hope you guys are having a good time.
@Tang: No, I flew on Friday night. I presume that you flew out last Sunday? Was it for work, (school) sport or leisure…or all three?
@Vleis: Did you fly with the St Albans team to the UK? If so, we were on the same flight.
@Hound Insider: they are also missing 3 very good players whom are in Croatia on water polo tour …..
Kearsney really showing their class at this festival like they have done throughout the season. Even without 5 key players missing due to Craven Week.
Some great games yesterday . The Bishops / Hilton game to finish off the day was an absolute cracker, which Bishops won 35 – 31 . Some really wonderful running by their backs stretching the Hilton defense all over the place.
@Playa: Those are both going to be cracker matches!!! I hope the weather doesn’t spoil it
Kicking myself for missing the action on both Saturday, and today
But I will beg, steal or borrow time to see at least the second half of the Hilton-SAC game and the entire Bishops-Kingswood game on Wednesday. Pity there’s rain predicted, but I really couldn’t be bothered at this stage.
@Vleis: Enjoy the cricket.
@McCulleys Workshop: I’m watching cricket at Eton College, so won’t be able to catch up this time. Have a beer for me.
Happy for my mate, whose son (u16A) played his first game for MHS “1st” team. He is very chuffed.
Sounds like an exciting game.
Kingswood 29 Michaelhouse 24
Bishops 62 Eton 10
Hilton 19 St Stithian’s 6
Clifton 31 Reddam House 3
St Andrew’s 52 St David’s 5
St Andrew’s School 7 Penryn 0
Excelsior 8 CBC (Boksburg) 0
Kearsney 67 St Alban’s 7
St Charles 42 Uplands 19
Eton 2nds 17 Somerset College 7
@Vleis: Good luck today, we’ll catch up on the Black Label end of it.
@Vleis: A full 2 years, so we will enjoy these moments as it does not happen often.
@kcman: ?? and that hasn’t happened for a while.
@Vleis: We don’t mind losing as long as it is not against SAC.
@kcman: Also, Beet doesn’t include these fixtures as part of the season on his website, we don’t count the results for Grogper cup, etc.
Sounds like you took a loss in 2014 when you didn’t need to.
Is anyone able to give the results of matches so far?
@kcman: OK, maybe it’s different for the Gauteng teams as their seasons are over at end of June, whereas the E & W Cape still have a chunk of their seasons left. As such, the Gauteng schools don’t take 1st teams on this tour – e.g. St Stithian’s call it a “Stayers XV”, St Alban’s do not play in the 1st team jersey, etc.
Looks like a tough assignment for Hilton today against Bishops – Looking forward to another day of good schoolboy rugby .
@Vleis: In 2014 when we went to Michaelhouse for ISRF we lost after the hooter against Michaelhouse with 7 x U16 players in that side and none of our Grant Khomo u16 players and it because the boys wore First XV jerseys it was part of the season’s results.
@kcman: Yep, much better to have an ugly win than a pretty loss.
That said, I don’t think you can include the ISRF results as part of the season’s results. The ISRF excludes: most/all matrics for some, all provincial players, all u19boys, all boys on cricket tour, choir tours, etc, etc…so most teams do not bear even the slightest resemblance to the actual 1st teams. The only potential banana skin left for KC in their regular season is Daniel Pienaar, but you should be too strong for them at home. That would be 15 wins out of 17, which is an excellent season!
@Vleis: We played poorly and Michaelhouse played well but in the end we carried on our winning form with another win by playing the big moments best. We obviously underestimated House and this nearly became our undoing. An ugly win always beats a pretty loss.
That’s 12 wins from 14 this year, not to bad for a school with only 220 boys. Keep it up lads.
@Wyvern: I was surprised that a near-full-strength Kingswood struggled to beat a weakened MHS. What happened?
At the 2012 ISRF, Kearsney send a very depleted team and were thrashed by St Alban’s (I think by 40 to 9) on the opening day, so they got sweet revenge in 2016, with the latter now sending an extremely depleted side. Hopefully the youngsters will learn from the experience and bounce back…but they have a strong MHS waiting.
Some one sided results but otherwise seems like a lot of good rugby was played!
@kcman: They cannot dictate what the schools must do but they are in full control of the provincial squads and systems. So if the school or boy don’t abide by their rules they are simply not considered..end of story. There are so many quality players to choose from in the WP that its a question of FIFO..So schools and the boys abide by the rules to be able to be considered for provincial colors.
@BoishaaiPa: Should Provinces dictate terms to the schools though?
In EP the kids have to foot their own bill to play at CW plus pay to play in the trials.
Dodgy I would say.
@kcman: Difference is that EP rugby does not prescribe what the schools can do or not..They cannot afford to tell a Grey PE what to do because they are too dependent on their players for EP sides..in the WP their are much more depth and any one school’s players can easily be substituted by another.
Case in point is that Grey PE did not even send their players to that trials in Cradock..Yet nothing happend and there is still plenty of Grey PE reps in the EP sides.
@BoishaaiPa: In the EC it seems the schools see things differently.
@kcman: In case of the Cape Schools festival..I know that WP forbids the schools to use their players else they will loose their CW places…I know it happend to Gim a couple of years ago when they wanted to take 2 of their Academy players to Cape Schools…They were told in no uncertain terms that those players will be replaced come AW if they play for the school…So the schools and the players do not want to compromise their position.
@kcman: I’m an optimist by nature and even I couldn’t see them doing anywhere near as well as they’ve done this year.I take my hat off to them.
Looking forward to a great festival at Bishops.
Would have been great to see a few match ups between schools
that don’t often get to play one another , Michaelhouse – St Andrews
College , Kearsney – Bishops , Michaelhouse – Bishops , Kearsney –
St Andrews College.
@Playa: By the way, I want you to go read your post on the Graeme Day Festival which you wrote last year.
Your boys have sure exceeded your expectations, well done on an outstanding season so far.
@Playa: I think all the players have already been snapped up way before CW in any case, it just appears as though boys from the EC have a little more pride in playing for their schools and put the school ahead of province, like it should be.
Don’t see the Province educating them?
@kcman: Welcome to the Cape Schools Week nightmare.Its unfortunate that provincial weeks have now become job interviews.I certainly look forward to some good games this Saturday.
Craven Week is nearly a whole week later so not sure why boys would want to miss playing in this Festival.
As far as I know this is an U18 Festival and definitely not a Stayers Festival.
Bishops will be at near full strength for this festival and rightly so as
They are hosting. With only two provincial call ups and one over age player. The rest will be 1st XV regular players. We could even see our head boy make a comeback from injury, major knee injury since game 1.
The Bishops rugby Facebook page will be buzzing during the event.

@Wyvern: They relied heavily on their star/bursary players, who chose to play for Saints rather than the Lions in Bondedag. That said, I think Saints will be very competitive next year as:
1. said star players are g11 forwards;
2. the 2nd team backs were all g11 for the last five games, which they won, including Kearsney away; and
3. their u16 age group was pretty competitive this year.
They may struggle a little at ISRF though, as they will be missing quite a few to provincial call ups.
@Vleis: I see!!! I thought something was off given how well St Albans have done this year. I agree with you about Saints, from what i saw in Grahamstown against us they can turn it on. I’m very interested to see how they do over the next few years….
@Playa: This is one of our stronger matric years, if we had to send a stayers team it would only be one regular first team player, a couple from seconds and quite a few from thirds and u16. Even if the ability was there, the team dynamic would definitely not be there
@McCulleys Workshop: @Bush: Good grief, it could be lambs to the slaughter for the inexperienced St Alban’s team. Hopefully I’m wrong and the boys will step-up. Nice to see Gomes in the squad – I know his dad, who will be super proud!
@Wyvern: There were a number of reasons for the loss. St Alban’s were missing 8 regulars, including their provincial players who played at Bondedag and their fly-half who was writing NBT exams. St Alban’s were also extremely lethargic and dropped balls on the line, etc, etc…but if I’m honest, Saints were very fired up and wanted it more on the day. As Saints showed when they were very unlucky to lose to DHS by one point to a last minute try, they have the ability to turn it on at home at times.
My son was bitterly disappointed to lose his last game for St Alban’s (especially to such a mediocre team)…but had no time to wallow in misery as he left the next afternoon for England on a cricket tour.
@Bush: Thanks Possibly Grade 12 scrummie at a loose end for the holidays?
@McCulleys Workshop: Well done, that’s 7 1st team players, 6 2nd team players, 6 3rd team players and 3 U16A’s. Strange to opt for grade 12 scrummie and grade 11 scrummie. Maybe thought would be to blood a younger fellow.
@Wyvern: You results against Dale and Queens were not too shabby either.You’re being modest.This is one year KC will not struggle with a Stayers team.Hopefully one of many to come
@Vleis: @Bush: I managed to get the House squad via surreptitious means! The numbers aren’t positional.
1) Keynan Knox 1st 2) Aidan Schwartz 1st 3) Ant Fleisher 3rd 4) Dave Pachonick 1st 5) Grant Haines 1st 6) Khule Khumalo 2nd 7) Luke Jonsson 2nd 8) Michael Gomes u16A 9) Nic Kershaw 1st 10) Odi Losaba 3rd 11) Oliver Calvert Evers 2nd 12) Ross Egbrink 1st 13) Solly Marx 3rd 14) Tom Price 2nd 15) Troy Nijland 2nd 16) Wes Turkington 2nd 17) Will Glassock 1st 18) Liam England U16A 19) Armin Prinsloo 2/3rds 20) Christian Opperman U16A 21) Aphiwe Mthalane 3rd 22) Tom Roarich 3rd
@Bush: Haha! Unfortunately we don’t have the luxury of depth that can compete with the all boys schools when leaving our matrics at home. Even though across the school this is one of our stronger years (judging by the results against SAC), we would still get a hiding from House and Bishops with a ‘stayers’ side
The Hilton side is a “Stayers Team” apart from one matric and unfortunately 2 U16s are not available because of provincial commitments. A number (8 or so) of grade 11s regularly played 1st team this year though so it should be a reasonable side.
@Wyvern: House play Kingswood on day one. For you the strength is 95% U16A players
@Bush: I would imagine since Bishops is hosting the festival and that this isn’t their best year, they would be taking a full strength team. I’m interested to hear what the strength of the teams will be….
@McCulleys Workshop: Nothing on Facebook. I will see if anyone may know.
@McCulleys Workshop: Afternoon, no I haven’t seen anything about the team going. Have you checked on the House Facebook page?
@Vleis: From recollection it is generally a Grade 11 (stayers) tournament. The House sports site isn’t showing the side or tour squad yet.
Bush do you know what squad is going to Bishops?
@Vleis: As far as I am aware Kingswood is sending a full strength team minus two u19s and two players that are injured. Btw I see that St Albans lost to saints, how did that happen!?
@Wyvern: Exactly what I have my eyes on
Are any bloggers up to date re the composition of their schools’ teams? As far as I’m aware, St Alban’s are not sending any matrics, nor g11s playing provincial rugby, nor g10s playing provincial rugby, nor g11s on cricket tour to the UK. So…the side will be extremely inexperienced.
@Playa: Monday: Hilton/Bishops & Kearsney/Eton, Wednesday: Bishops/KC & Hilton/SAC should be good ones!!!
@Rugger fan: Piley Rees should have given it away
I’m gonna make a day of it on Saturday.A few games worth leaving the office for on Monday and Wednesday
@Rugger fan: Bishops
What is the venue? – sorry I missed that.
