@McCulleys Workshop: It’s usually a halfway stop between anywhere and nowhere…depends on where you planning to go or not go!..The Rawsonville boys never miss it as a pitstop on their way to Newlands..sometimes they make the rugby, most of the times they don’t!..

@BoishaaiPa: I’ve been drinking at the Klapmuts hotel after a Nederberg Auction. It was very entertaining! Bush that would be a good spot.

You could scrum against the local butcher like you did last time and bring that rodeo bull of yours!

@Grasshopper: On the hooker issue..I too rate Larkham as a very good player, but I think he was done a disservice by his school playing him at flank the whole year. Hooker’s primary role is at scrum time and line-outs. Against Sharks the game was more loose and he could play his type of game and the Sharks line-outs was not that good. He came on in the 2nd half against the Lions in the final and missed 3 or 4 line out throws. The first line outs WP lost in the game. the WP scrum was also under more pressure in the 2nd half as the game got tight. I think that 2nd half might have cost him his chances at higher honors and he might not have been a sharp as he could be.

Congrats to all the boys, and their parents, in the two SA sides. As always, there is some surprises , for sure, and some players very unlucky not to have been chosen.
However! These youngsters did not select themselves, and therefore needs our support. Obviously very proud of the 8 Boishaai youngsters and captain Salmaan Moerat. He is a quality young man , who is modest, well mannered and down to earth.
These youngsters must now grab the opportunity, and enjoy the moment!.

For those deserving of election, but did not make it! Just remember that the success rate from SA Schools members making it it big after school, is not at all very high. So! If you really have the talent, and is prepared to work your butt off, there is certainly still opportunities available after school.

Well done to all the players that made the sides! Give the Europeans hell – especially the poms!

Without wanting to detract from any selections, I’m very surprised at Cabous Eloff and Tyrone Green missing out on the top team. They must be bitterly disappointed – especially the former, who made the top team last year already.

Congrats to all the boys who made the national squads. Super proud of Keagan Glade and Mark Snyman and the 5 other Lions players. Happy for JJ vd Mescht as well. Sorry for PJ Jacobs (Lions #8), Chuiner van Rooyen (Lions #15), Larkham (WP hooker) and for those brave players that know they could have been there had it not been for serious injury such as Tiaan van der Merwe (hooker Helpies) and Ruan Vermaak (Monnas lock).

I agree on the punishment for dopers. A life ban would be the best deterrent. Maybe temporary bans can just be applicable at school level with boys getting counselling. At professional level – ‘licence’ should be taken for good. As you would an accountant bust for cooking books.

Bedorwe afrikaanse superskool seuntjies sal baie moeilik aanpas in Frankryk. Ek sou eerder sê hulle moet so 2 of 3 jaar wag en seker maak hulle is onder mammie se rok uit voor hulle gaan.

Die kinders ‘who wants it the most badly’ en nie opgepiep is in ouerhuise of luukse skoolkoshuise, moet nou gaan.

Unfortunately you need to take the pain too. The only way we will rid the sport of doping is by giving life bans, period. So if you are caught, you are gone. No second chances. In this case, age could be against the individual hence trying to cut a deal. Let’s hope it comes out soon but on news 24 there are a host of new claims .

Not as easy as everybody thinks.

@Kattes-Strofes: @Carl de Kock aka Calamari: I know duimpie is interested in going to lions due to his brother already being there. Gianni wasn’t on anyone’s radar until after Affies match. Khanya and Manny well WP knew their abilities for a long time now but poor amateur apathy from union and loyalty expectations unbelievable. The only player WP wasn’t ever going to allow leave was Salmaan. His pricetag is high. Seems they were willing to lock him in and gamble with others staying. The 5 of them should have been kept regardless but appears the Union too amateur and weak in decision making.

Big drama in WP regarding young players signing at other unions. Although the focus is currently on the 3 Boishaai youngsters and the Paul Roos no.10, I heard from reliable contacts, that their is a few more looking for greener pastures. Interesting times indeed!

Daar word reen vir more en Saterdag voorspel, so die veld gaan swaar wees.

GIM V OAK The biggest game this weekend. Quite a trek to Riversdal already. Bishops v Landbou also big 1. Boishaai v Bosche and Paul Roos v Wynberg.

So guys its a small world. Watching the Lions AW side battle the Sharks AW at Loftus and I was very impressed by the Sharks hooker playing in direct opposition to my son. Afterwards my boy raves about his opponent and their individual little game there on the dark side in the front row. As it turns out the two teams meet again at the AW and they square up again. By then I have been keenly interested in their contest. My wife is a photographer and walks across to me and tells me there is the boy’s dad. Being the rugbymal guy I am, I take a walk over to the corner to shake his hand. Turns out the dad is Mr. Prinsloo and we were at school together in the 80’s battling it out in KZN against schools (when the waves weren’t good) like Westville and Kearsney for Gelofte (those days Gelofte was actually quite good). Now we meet on this blog again. Small world.

@Grasshopper: No offence intended but go and do some research (and I have done that a few years ago and have been in consultation with sports medicine Dr’s locally) on that and you’ll find medically there is nothing wrong with a aged 13 kid to start doing weights with obvious limitations to certain exercises such as squats, dead lifts etc as its not just about the weights its about technique.

@MikeSt: true, my fighting weight. But I took bodybuilding seriously, even doing some comps. I was pushing big! Not the best now though with stuffed joints & muscles. These kids are starting pushing weights at 13 which isn’t good. My best ever 1 rep was 170kg and I almost died, proper rep to chest with no spotting. A healthy 18 year old forward should be doing 10 reps between 100kg & 120kg without roids.

    Andre Esterhuizen 19
    Chris Cloete 16
    Arno Botha 14
    Jaco Kriel 13
    Paul Schoeman 13
    Adriaan Strauss 13

@Roger: I have known Kennedy since u11 and to me he is best at wing or fulla where he has space but it will depend how Mr. Spillhaus chooses his combinations. I saw him at KES this year in a few matches and he was brilliant. I like him at fullback. Monnas have a very good fullback in Prinsloo (played AW this year) and Helpmekaar have the exhilarating David Cary who also loves the #15 jumper (CW left wing this year).

@Grasshopper: I saw Schwulst on a number of occasions and remember him well from the previous season. Very promising player. Hard worker. The selectors select and we support. Not that it matters, but I think Prinsloo should have been at CW as hooker over the talented Dylan Richardson who in my own view is an exceptional player as a loosie (#8) but not as a hooker.

@Quagga: Prinsloo should be on 15. Van den berg(12) has sort of given up on rugby. Front row Asenathi, Damian and Keegan. No special props at Monnas. Blignaut stopped playing rugby. He now only focus on his shotput. Locks is also a concern. Vusi at centre is good. The others mentioned myst still proof that they can play at that level. Randall on wing currently losing experience. Hlalu but if a one man show. Think next year bulk from Monnas and Helpies again.

Throw in some very talented players from Bennies, Saints, St Johns, Parktown, Florida, Noordheuwel, Marais Viljoen etc and Lions rugby is looking very healthy

@Hooit: I think they may adopt the same strategy as in the GK with those big mobile #7’s at lock. Last year Ignis Meyer, PJ Jacobs and Chris Pietersen were all selected at lock. Hlalu was at #7 and has moved to the backline since then. I see Gordon as the most likely #8 – and I realise my views may be controversial so it will be a nice debate next year. Don’t see the front row as sorted for next year. Will see what comes up but strong contenders will be Asenathi, Glade, Ignis Meyer and Nkosi Masuku already. I don’t know the Monnas props well enough so let me know who to look out for. As far as the ones mentioned Meyer from Helpies was superb in the trials but injured, Glade (KES) and Asenathi (Saints) were in the CW already as well as SARU U16 green squad and Masuku (Parktown) played GK and AW already. In terms of the hookers there are a few like Darnell Osuagwu (Parktown) AW and Morne Brandon (Monnas) GK, Ruan Vosloo (Noordheuwel) GK (SARU green sq), Bandile (KES), AJ Meyer (Marais Viljoen) or Nicolas Brimecombe (Saints) all looking to upset Dameon Venter’s (Helpies) (GK and AW) aspirations next year. In the centres I think there is talent in abundance. Muzi Manyike (Jeppe) should be there (GK this year), Hlalu (KES) will be in the mix, Randall (Helpies), Van Tonder (Helpies), Zandre vd Berg and Dandre Prinsloo (Monnas) all jump to mind immediately.

@Quagga: If the Sharks No8 was Jonothan O’Neill then he is grade 11. What did you think of the Sharks big fullback and tall centre with curly hair, both grade 11? Prinsloo must have played ahead of Schwulst in the game you watched. Schwulst is in grade 11 too.

@Quagga: Front row for next year should be sorted. Looseforwards is going to a good headache for Lions. 6-Snyman. 7-Van Niekerk/Van den Berg. 8-Jacobs/Gordon. This excludes current u/16. Problem for Lions next year could be on 12 and 13.

This comment more relevant on the Noordvaal schools. SA teams playing 3 games in August. Beeld quarter, semi and finals also all in August. EG, Garsies, Nelspruit and Monnas could all have players in SA teams. Could be a real deciding factor not considered yet. Team like Nelspruit and EG could benefit.

My only observations for the amazingly entertaining CW and AW I care to share here:
 I was surprised that the ref in the CW final did not check with the TMO when Jacobs held up Moerat at the start of the game, even after the player (captain) asked him a few times to please check.
 There were quite a few players at the AW that should have been at the CW, but that is no surprise. The AW players that impressed me were WP #6 and #8 and my son (Lions #2) enjoyed a great contest with Sharks #2 Prinsloo (he rates him as one of the better hookers he has played against these past 2 years). The Sharks #8 was also very good. WP #15 was also very talented, as were the Lions #12 and #13.
 The Lions game plan did not do their loosies like #6 Snyman and #7 Scholtz any favors by posting them out wide and not at the coal face, but the WP flankers were superb in that final match.
 Lions #8 PJ Jacobs (Pot) is only in grade 11 and hard as nails. He really made an impression on me both at the GK and now at the CW. He will be one for the future. Exceptionally effective in defense.
 Van Niekerk (CW) and Van den Berg (AW) of the Lions are excellent players and will be pillars of strength next year if they make CW selection
 The Lions have two great props for next year in Glade (KES) and Asenathi Nhalbakanye (Saints) that will be in matric next year. Glade actually manned up against Cabous Eloff and that was noteworthy.
 The Lions had 19 players in the CW and AW that are only in grade 11 this year, many of those who attended the GK and AW last year so the future for them should be 8)
 I got the impression the Sharks team selections as to who is at CW and who is at AW and who plays where were perhaps in some cases interesting.
 The Lions only had a lineout success rate of 33% in the final. Credit to WP for stealing quite a few balls, but you cannot win a final with stats like that.
 I think all the talk of the ‘Frenchies’ was blown out of proportion.
 It was stunning to see the crowd walk across in droves when the AW WP vs GL started heating up. People were rubber-necking from far to catch a glimpse of the action. The Lions almost won it in the end.
 To me the two Jeppe boys #10 and #13 were spectacular in the CW, as were the back three and fly of WP, the Lions #15 Van Rooyen, the Pumas #6 and Valke #10 and the Cheetahs #15. The WP #7 had a great week. Simelane was the most exciting player of the tournament for me.
 Do not underestimate the Sharks next year. Players like Van der Mescht and Richardson will come into their own again at their own age group level although I think the latter is a great loosie not a #2. JJ gave the Lions major headaches with ball in hand in the GK final last year.
 It’s time for someone to break the WP stranglehold on the youth weeks. All respect to them they were classy as can be
 Kearsney College was great, the event was awesome and the good people of Durban were very supportive.

@MikeSt: boet, I did bodybuilding for 5 years from 18 to 23 and trust me benching 150kg for 10 reps is pretty hard. I weighed 95kg back then & 8% body fat. A comfortable bench of 10 reps was about 130kg. Friends on roids could do around 160kg. These kids must be superhuman then. I think David Pocock can do 170kg for 3 reps, but that is more like powerlifting. I reckon the strongest Bok prop might be able to do 180kg for 1 rep. Squats maybe 200kg and leg press 500kg, done properly not this kak Crossfit rubbish. Supplements for sure, Creatine & Glutamine is a must! It’s the taking of cough medication before a game and Deca are issues. I can see a few Boks who have taken dodgy stuff, one fullback/centre from the Bulls for sure….

@Grasshopper: @Carl de Kock aka Calamari: The biggest problem is the guys Drug free sport in itself. They are not prepared to assist any youngster on which supplements they can use and which not. The simple answer they give to people is that you dont need tl take any supplements.

This is a bullshit story as any sportsmen needs to get supplemented in a manner even if its only vitamins A, B C or whatever.

The majority of the unions after school do actually test their guys and then a hell of a lot of testing is done at CW. The system is however flawed as is happens continuously at CW that the same guy gets tested 2 and in sometimes 3 times due to the nr system that they use.

Apparently the reason is that they cant do selective testing by indicating an individual.

Then on the strength of the guys I dint think we realize on how strong the youngsters are nowadays as they start building strength from a lot earlier age than what we used to

@star: Agreed as long as other schools have their own house in order too. To build trust among schools there needs to be more openess and transparency regarding bursaries and new arrivals. The age issue we know all about and drugs is usually a non sport related issue, boys trying to look good for chicks BUT random off season testing by a neutral doctor at each school would be good.

Not good with the names as well. Lions number 10 also a great player. Maybe used as a replacement 10/15. From a KZN supporter POV I was hugely disappointed but we’ll see how it goes in 2017.

    @Grasshopper:

I think that’s pretty much definite. Huge leadership vacuum at Glenwood with those 2 gone in short succession. If rumors are to be believed – a bunch of key staff are following so this whole thing could spell a death knoll for Glenwood as we know it.

Then all the haters on this blog can convene and have a multiple-session of ‘soggy biscuit’ in celebration of the demise of the evil empire and wax lyrical how KZN will win the next Craven Week now that Glenwood is out of the picture.

The only way to save this scenario is to pick a VERY STRONG headmaster and a good leadership team around him. Tough times ahead for the Green Machine I think.

@Babbelas: I agree with you, I would also play Semilane at 10. I know his kicking out of hand is not the best but non of the main contenders really excelled in that department. I like a 10 with a good kick but sometimes you have to look at what you got. Let’s be honest Henry Hannibal also didn’t have the greatest kicking game. Simelane looks like a good reader of the game and his option taking impressed me. I think he is wasted at 13.

@Ploegskaar: bloody difficult trying to accommodate all the talent. Boys end up playing at of position, get overlooked – sometimes I think it must be easier in Aus, Scotland, Wales etc where the talent is spread so much thinner and across more sports – you identify early and keep them in the system.

    @Babbelas: Simelane at 10 – can’t agree with that…

@odie15: Simelane not quick enough for the wing – why would you move a great centre to the wing anyway? It’s not as if we are drowning in brilliant number 13’s in SA right now?

Objektiwiteit is so skaars soos hoendertande.

    Feite/Voorstelle:

    1. WP het nie kwota spelers nie
    2. Die ander provinises het….
    3. WP nr 13 is ‘n Bok in wording
    7. JC Pretorius nr 6 Pumas moet net sewes speel in senior rugby

I see no-one is going for Green at flyhalf – is that because the incumbent is still there or because he is genuinely better? I though Green had a better week than Willemse. I guess it comes down to what kind of flyhalf the selectors want – Green takes the ball flatter and is more direct and Willemse play a bit further back. Stransky versus Hennie Le Roux / Henry Honiball

Then we first have to decide if the selectors of the SA team is knowledgeable and how they are going to move the boys to make up the qouta. @odie15: Eish I love the passion in the supporters, don’t get me wrong. It’s the arrogant drivel from many WP supporters on Twitter and Facebook in the past few days that have irritated me. Okes like Tony Stoops loves to poke fun at KZN and other provinces. Also WP supporters go on about how much harder their ‘league’ is. Take Glenwood as an example, only because I know a little about them. Playing Monnas, Affies & Grey Bloem every year is the equivalent of playing Boishaai, Paul Roos and Paarl Gim. Then they usually play Kearsney and Wildeklawer, in both likely to face another 2 or 3 Top 20 sides. So Glenwood’s fixture list is no easier than say SACS, Wynberg, Rondebosch and Bishops, bit those are the supporters that are bleating on about how KZN is rubbish. I would bet quite a bit that in most years Glenwood would beat ALL the Southern Suburb schools and most Northern Suburb schools. They would normally battle vs the big 3 and Boland Landbou. Although their last game vs BL they won quite easily. Oakdale and Outeniqua would be close games.

I know our players are scattered amongst all the unions. I know our culture breeds good players. What the unions do with them after they come of age is the issue. I measure every year against Grey College. Their record is untouchable as a school. They are the only school in the Freestate mind you so imagine all the boys in the winelands in 1 school with 1 team representing. Well even a cherries well no it be a “druiwe” team. Unfortunately they don’t dominate as a OFS side for obvious reasons. But to call us arrogant bit closed minded. We enjoy enthusiasm and live for the next week’s challenge knowing it’s a big 1 every week!

@odie15: Not saying it doesn’t matter, you WP okes just love to go on about how strong your league is and how you unbeatable etc like rugby doesn’t exist anywhere else in SA, it gets boring. Yes WP have been strong in the past 3 years, well done. However, good players exist in all the provinces. Gary Gold, don’t get me started on him….complete waste of space. Hopefully that will be Gary Teichman’s first task, to get rid of him. Sharks senior rugby is in serious kak…..I mean the Valke manhandled the Sharks ix on Friday.

@Grasshopper: So now you saying school rugby doesn’t matter! Yes the Stormers are poor. I agree totally….That will continue until management and senior coaches are replaced with professionals who have an idea. I don’t support any franchise financially anymore. No tickets bought in 4 years. I refuse to support The Allastair Coetsees and Thelo Wakefields of this world won’t allow change. And I am not talking politics here. These men who claim to have ruby’s best interest at heart really Don’t! They self enriching individuals who’s default settings are boring kick, chase and tackle rugby. There’s no vision at all. Gary Gold of the SHARKS well of everywhere moves around collecting money until he’s found wanting as he’s all talk. But you like dishing out….don’t see much taking though!

Next year on paper is a better age group according to my knowledge in the Cape. Added to that flavour is top 3 u16 teams in the country. As you said your Sharkies made final in Grant Khomo…..But there was some folly in WP the Monday according to ploegie who warned of pitfalls. I doubt that will rear it’s head next year. I watched the Boland vs WP game closely and too be honest was thinking what is so hot about this WP side. Boland just ran out of gas but they showed the WP side are not invincible. The Boland No8 was causing havoc. Experience was on the WP side which they may lack next year….time will tell…

See a few bloggers just can’t help themselves from commenting in a rather PARENTAL tone that “THIS NONSENSE MUST STOP”. Calvinism still rules in some Pta suburbs (Garsies on the eastern side is it not). Maybe they should concentrate on applying a bit of discipline to their rugby players, then the BB’s will not lose at such great margins to the Lions. Hehehehehe

Should @Beet regulate or not? Well, I think the site’s self-regulation has been quite effective to date. Must say it does add a bit of spice to have a few strong opinions and K..k-praters. To those that disapprove – just keep an open mind guys – don’t be so overly sensitive. In show business they say that any media is good media. Generally speaking the boys that have received negative comments have had quite a lot of backing from many more supporters (not saying I condone the negative comments).

In my opinion if the Border and EP sides were chosen on “real” merit this year there would have been far more black players.

Framesby are now the EP Quota team.

Hopper stop always trying to cover Glenwood’s arse because it becomes the topic of each thread, Glenwood this and Glenwood that……….get it in your head, nobody in KZN likes Glenwood so no matter what you say they are always gonna have a go…..you guys started it with playing Oupas in the First XV.

@Carl de Kock aka Calamari: Im not questioning that, but soon, you will have to go and recruit in the Eastern Cape. That has been my point. WP, SWD, Boland, EP, Border are able to select on merit because rugby is the first choice of the quota component. Elsewhere, in most years, this is not the case. You even have 5th team school players in these teams. Why did you think FS had a blow-out on Saturday? Key players were unavailable. And while I am saddened that this had to happen to the team which I support, it did illustrate the farcical nature of team selections.

@Carl de Kock aka Calamari: OK, let me remind you Beet is a Kearsney Old Boy, he started and runs this site. It was originally for KZN bloggers but over time included many more from around the country. We now have to wade through tons of Afrikaans, Zulu and Xhosa posts. I try get through some of them but there is so much colloquial Afrikaans and kakpraat that I give up. I think it’s only fair you need to wade through the KZN kak too. It’s pure sourgrapes from the private schools in KZN, if they were beating Glenwood nothing would be said. But now it buying, poaching, anything they can get their hands on to degrade and defile Glenwood. Glenwood certainly isn’t the best school let alone rugby school in SA, but OB’s are very proud of where we have come from. Only 20 years ago we were probably 6th best in KZN if we were lucky with the occasional great year, so for us to be even mentioned in the Top20 is amazing. The other KZN schools seem to be jealous of the achievements so pick holes in it. Envy is a horrible trait. Yes, Glenwood have made mistakes in the past buying in players, overaged players, drug problems etc….but many schools have done the same. But to be continually judged by wrongs of the past is wrong.

Hopper you very good at going back to yester year. GW were doing then what they have perfected today. I could not give a MF how many times your school pumps MHS. Go Glenwood the greatest school ever. Put your team down pay your R10 and discuss rugby.

Green Mamba we own the Tow Trucks the okes from GW service them for us.

@Bush: FYI, Glenwood’s last 4x SA Schools reps were all at Glenwood from grade 8, explain that for me please?

    Marco Palvie
    Kenny Van Niekerk
    Morne Joubert
    Jaco Coetzee

Glenwood bought in players like Marne Coetzee, Warren Potgieter and a few others about 4 years ago now. That has stopped so let it go. Some players arrive in grade 10/11 because they have approached Glenwood because they want to go there.

@Bush: Ya and House only give out 10 bursaries, those are the public ones. The rugby and sports stars are all funded by wealthy old boys. Hilton and House have the the wealthiest OB’s but battle to stay afloat according to the House bloggers, gosh I feel for them. House, Hilton and Kearsney have the first pick when it comes to provincial reps. What kid or his family would say no to any of those schools bursaries. You okes are just gatvol of catching a snotklap every year from the poor trash from Scumbilo. It’s nice hey when the shoe is on the other foot. We used to catch those klaps for a decade when House bought entire teams in post matric….

@Carl de Kock aka Calamari: Obviously, many of the deserving white players were overlooked. And although so called “coloured” players are included in the quotas, the vertically challenged minister of sport, has already made noises about “authentic Africans” in teams. Border/Eastern Cape, will soon have the highest paid players, not because they are necessarily the best, but because they meet the ethnic prescriptions. How and who will do the classification, is still unclear, and I wonder if this function will be privatised and contracted out (to connections of course)

@4×4: Talking about the French, 7 of the French teams starting lineup at the European Soccer final was non white.

Qoutas is the best way to protect lazy incompetence. I wonder how many players of colour these French rugby scouts have singned ? I would love to know. Looking at senior players, not to many black SA players seem to get contracted by the French, I wonder why, are the French rasict or maybe they just want the best players?

    @McCulleys Workshop:

I didn’t see. Been stuck up at Kusile Power Station all week and weekend. In fact, haven’t been involved in reffing this entire season due to overseas work committments. Haven’t watched a single schoolboy match actually.

So no – comment, other than my standard one, the main points of which are:
    1. Referees are not intentionally biased against any team – that is a perception of spectators with an interest in particular team and a need to explain their team’s non-performance.
    2. Spectators don’t know the laws although they think they are the rugby law equivalent of Gerrie Nel and Barry Roux rolled into one.
    3. Referees are subject to judgement and criticism that players are not. Look at the Craig Joubert incident in the World Cup – weeks and weeks of vitriol in the newspaper but not a word about the Scottish players who should have just thrown to No2, retained the ball and kicked into touch.

More than 70% of black South Africans do not believe that sport teams should be picked based on transformation goals, but rather purely on merit.

This is according to a 2016 national survey by the SA Institute of Race Relations, which asked South Africans for their opinion regarding merit-based selections of sports teams.

A total of 77% of all South Africans were in favour of teams picked based on merit, without any use of racial quotas. Of the black people who took part in the survey, 74.2% agreed.

For the rest of the population, 87% of coloureds, 94.9% of Asians, and 84.3% of whites were in favour of merit-based selection.

The survey involved 2 245 people from all nine provinces, of whom 1 757 were black.
