2010-present played 23 KES won 8, 1 draw, 13 losses;
2000-present played 33 KES won 17, 2 draws, 14 losses – it’s now a proper rivalry!
1970-1999 played 31, KES won 24, 1 draw, 6 losses;
1935-1969 played 38, KES won 22, 3 draws, 13 losses,
Overall played 102, KES won 63, 6 draws, 33 losses.
Righting the ledger is probably something even me at my adolescent age won’t be alive to see, the gap is an almighty one, 62-34 I think after Saturday? I also however never thought I’d see 5 wins in a row for us (or KES) in the derby and it has happened.. do we dare to dream for 6 or 7? Playing twice has also obviously thrown a spanner in the works; these things feel more possible, if you are “better” than your opponent over 2 years for example, you can put yourself 4 wins to the good instead of just 2. Let’s see what 2027 holds. We close the season at home to Parktown; I think a lot of the grade 11s will get at least 15 mins. Glodi I know will be away at SA Schools anyway. Since 2010:

In any event, everything is cyclical. Jeppe have won 5 in a row for the first time since the 1950’s (which is wonderful for the rivalry). KES will come back hard, that is beyond doubt. They are hurting in Houghton. I remember a time when we couldn’t buy a win versus Boys High and now Boys High have won 1 of the last 20 odd games. Jeppe still have a long, long way to go if they want to right the ledger and replicate KES’s domination of the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and noughties. Since 2010 Jeppe have won 12 and KES 8 with one draw. Well done to them – 2027 will again provide some compulsive viewing !
@wanza_15 (Comment #27) I think this year was a bit of an outlier re the respective fixture lists. Jeppe went all in and KES have taken a more circumspect approach to their season. For reference in 2024 Jeppe played 9 fixtures against Top 20 schools v KES’s 7 fixtures. In 2025 Jeppe 10 v KES 8… Jeppe consistently playing 2-3 fixtures more per season, usually with an opener against perennial Top 20 finishers, Garsfontein…
@wanza_15 (Comment #27) I very rarely agree with you because you are a diplomat and I am angry little man but you hit the nail squarely in the head with this one….. Except you have ommitted Northwood which has gone from being a walkover fixture to one of the hardest of the year …. our KZN bloggers can better explain the rise of the Knights …. but the progress of our rugby club can be seen through the season I mean take the 5th team game this year in the first leg KES won 47 – 21 and this past weekend they lost 13-12 for me that tells a story about coaching in my opinion I am not a rugby fundi just a Jeppe Stan on the stand ….. the depth of talent at KES is scary just the number of athletes they have thank you TAG foundation and the generosity of their old boys but I think they still getting out coached and Jeppe lately seems to be able to unearth diamonds in the rough…. like I have previously said Jeppe is doing more with less imagine where we would be if we could match them in recruiting and funding like I said they have had a fully equipped gym for more than 20 years at that school we still using a weights room that can only accommodate 5 players at a time…. once we are recruiting at their level and providing similar training facilities then a comparison of down the line results would be fairer right now 7 wins and 1 draw out 22 is much better than 3 wins and 1 draw that we saw at the start of the season 😉

I think next year on paper will be much closer, on paper.
I see we tried our best this year in anticipation to the strong KES u16s to give as many U17s game time as we could aside from the actual u17 starters in the 1st XV.
One other thing I did want to allude to was the fixture list and strength of opposition, many a time I’ve heard that KES faired well against Jeppe X age group but come up short at 1st XV; I think I have an explanation for this.. It is the strength of opposition by the time derby day comes around. By the time we play the second leg against KES, we have played KES themselves, Garsfontein, Affies, Paarl Boys, Grey College, Monument, DHS, Westville, and someone tipped to be a decent 1st XV given their previous u16 year (Oakdale/Boland/College/etc). It is just a gulph in class. I think there is a genuine difference in pain tolerance.
If the KES fixutre list doesn’t graduate to the difficulty to that of Jeppes, I fear this could go on forever really, maybe with the odd win for KES. I watch Jeppe very closely week in week out and I can tell you Saturday didn’t concern me at all. These boys have had near death experiences (Of course I’m exaggerating), they’d choose to play KES in a heartbeat again.
I came away from yesterday’s derby deflated and defeated, while at the same time remarkably impressed with how well attended and organized an event it was. The school continues to excel as both venue and host with an impeccably well-maintained campus, not to mention outstanding catering. The bac/egg/cheese/hashbrown breakfast roll was possibly the highlight of the day. I arrived promptly at 7.30am so parking wasn’t an issue and chose to leave a good hour after the days last fixture so getting out was a breeze too. Kudo’s to Jeppe, who arrived with intent, backed up with the desire, attitude and the requisite skills required to pull off a remarkable 2 out of 3, A team victories (a minute away from 3 from 3, 2nd week in a row the U16A get the job done in the last minute, who’s their coach? I’m sending him my cardiologists bill) and 2 from 2 from the 1sts/2nd’s fixtures. Across the entire day, KES won 14, lost 7, with 1 draw. Within the league we participate, our depth is unrivalled with the exception of Affies and I suspect DHS too. So, the rugby program is healthy. The key is finding that extra 2%-3% from the A teams, elevating the program to consistently produce Top 20 performances. It would be an interesting exercise to rank schools based on the results across all teams and age groups. The 1st team was without Diederick Kleyn who suffered a season ending injury prior to the break. Also, Ashton Vreugdenburg (sic) hasn’t played a single game this season, a regular starter in last year’s XV and a boy from whom much was expected of in 2026. Other than that, it was pretty much a full strength XV. Jeppe were just in a different class yesterday. As they have been in both legs of the derby, if we being honest. 31-24 flattered in the 1st leg. Anyone watching would have accepted a final score of 40-18. The return leg was perhaps a fairer reflection of the gap between the 2 sides. But as Jeppe has shown this season, they’re a side guilty of not maintaining the intensity for the full 70. They have this penchant of switching off for extended periods of a match but, blow me down with a feather, when they choose to cycle through the gears, they are near unbeatable. When our lineouts started firing, we became competitive and threatened to stage a remarkable comeback. But then Jeppe found that extra gear and as easy as that, any thoughts of a comeback were quashed, decisively, clinically, conclusively… The gulf in class and ability is easily 15-20 points, frustrating, as through the age groups, this group of REDS has fared well against Jeppe.

That Drostdy v Milnerton result looks very strange? Drostdy were at home and have had a great season thus far, with nine victories (some huge) and only two losses. Milnerton have only won two games and lost more than 10.

To be honest we had 3 or 4 injuries if I recall I know for a fact three players that were massive for us yesterday were definately not there against Boys High the loosehead, right wing and full back….. but yesterday I saw a different Jeppe very confident on the ball running roit was an absolute pleasure to watch…… Great all round effort by all teams I must say

The board will have looked really nice, we took 1s, 2s, 14A and 15A, narrowly losing the 16A game, damn so close we came, KES won it literally with the last play.
As you say, let’s bask in the glory. You may think otherwise because of how diplomatic I speak here but I love a win against KES especially AT KES more than anything. Let’s get druuuuuuuunk Ringooooo!!!!!!!! 5s in the air

I can remember looking up historic records and the score being 52 -17 with 5 draws….. for the head to head to be 62 – 34 today says how glorious the last 16 years have been long may it last …. well done Jeppe boys

At 30 minutes played I couldn’t help but find myself glossing through the all time past scores, I thought KES were in big trouble and we were on course for a record score.
It almost feels like KES launched their comeback with too much time left, gassed out and leaving too much time for Jeppe to do what they did all first half 1 more time.

But like I said on here on Wednesday, for KES to win would take a herculean effort, maybe if there were 2 Sam Smiths on the field.. Our pack is just too battle proven for today’s opponent, they’ve been through a lot this season, 7 out of the top 12 schools they’ve been in scrums and wars against, our srumming today was vicious; there is nothing KES can/could come up with that could faze these forwards we have; if The Reds up the ante (as they did) we will just up it more, our ceiling is higher, but again nonetheless, what a game.

@Skywalker (Comment #10) It’s the sort of feedback that gives you hope. Yes, sustainability of these programs is what is difficult. If you have a super wealthy OB committing say 3 or more million a year it’s all good, but all they have to do is switch off the pipe and then it’s over. Glenwood know all too well, we maintained it for 15 years, back to the hard slog, but the OBs are all going to be contributing in many different ways now going forward. The school recently upgraded a class-room for R80,000 and the Hopper sign on the main building is going to cost R35,000. We are small fry compared to the DHS investments recently, the new block which was in the tens of millions. BUT we will get there and the school will get the athletes naturally, just needs the best coaching. I’m sure Jacques Deen, Heike van der Merwe and Jeremy McLaren enjoyed that win, all ex Glenwood. We just need to get a core group of 20 to 30 allrounder kids a year and keep it going to compete. Northwood will naturally get the best from the North coast, those not going to Kearsney, Clifton, House or Hilton. I agree, Northwood vs Glenwood could become a great match-up in years to come…

That is great feedback to recieve. I hear you on the national weeks haveing kept them active, thats a good point. I had thought they may be a bit tired but the looked sharp. My worry for NW down the line though is that our juniours are not great. u15 is weak in particular. In 3 years time these glory days could be long forgotten! DHS this weekend will show, as vs Westville – NW are far behind them in recruitment…the competition never ends – I think the comp between NW and Glenwood will be close in the years to come.

That record loss was embarrassing but not unexpected. The Northwood guys had been in national weeks and fully sharp (SA Schools etc), the Glenwood guys had been on holiday for 6 weeks and not game sharp, a big loss was expected but not the 80+. I think only Grey Bloem has done that to us. The OBs are now fully engaged, got over 60 of us in the UK buying OBs rugby jerseys and getting together. We have a plan. What was amazing was the feedback given by Jamie Wimble’s dad around the Glenwood Boys spirit, respect, greeting and manners, that made my weekend even with the massive loss. There was some hope in the junior teams with closer results and some wins…..

DHS nearly got caught napping, but they will be wide awake now, and no chance NW can catch them off guard after a record victory over Glenwood. Was not expecting that. The NW okes looked on point. It will be a good contest, but DHS will also be hurting after NW snuck one over them at home in the first fixture. I think NW have momentum though and nothing to lose, so honestly dont know. If DHS wins it could make sense, and if NW wins it could make sense too. Could go down to the wire again…

I think SACS is a team to keep an eye on. Actually think they have been underachieving this year with the talent at their disposal. They have an u17 loosehead that played GK last year, two tightheads that played WP this year (WPXV (he’s u17) and Academy Week), a lock that played Academy Week, last year’s WPXV GK number 8, an u17 scrumhalf that started over the WP GK 9 of last year before he left to Monument, Jake Dave at 10 (WP Academy Week), two centres that played for WP (WPXV and Academy Week) and an u17 fullback that played GK last year. They should really have been the best in the Southern Suburbs this year with that pedigree. Finally played to their potential vs PRG.

Should make for great viewing then on Saturday in Houghton, The Reds will be super motivated to break the duck. We have the one injury at centre, Joel Akilo, but he’s been out for quite a while now, since the Affies game; the team has a found identity without him so to say. And then now against DHS I noticed that it was our 2nd team wing who started at 14 but he is by no means a slouch (Prosper Mbandlwa, Grade 11), in fact, many prefer him over the guy who normally plays. Prosper scored late and sparked euphoric celebrations, what we thought was going to be the winner on van Heerden’s, only for DHS to be awarded a penalty upon the restart and kick over the equalizing 3 points, 21-21 it ended.
I still like our matchups against KES, especially up front. I think the forwards are well seasoned and have been through the trenches this season – I think they look forward to Saturday.
Other than the best interschools in the world, i will keenly watch KES/Jeppe, PBHS/Maritzburg, DHS/Northwood and SACS/Rondebosch. Looking forward to score predictions from those in the know.
I might be wrong, but a think KES have a clean bill of health for the first time in two years !!! Can Brent clarify ? If so, the Reds to take it …..
