Glenwood vs DHS (Durban’s Oldest Derby)

Glenwood vs DHS (Durban’s Oldest Derby)

The first mention of rugby being played appears in the October 1912 copy of ‘The Magnet’. It certainly makes interesting reading;

Rugby, that tenderly fostered shoot, has sprung up marvellously since goalposts and other accessories have materialised. The keenness of the players now leaves nothing to be desired, save perhaps fewer ‘devil-thorns’on the pitch. Doubtless a three quarter when tackled will rise from a patch of lusty ‘devil-thorns’with more alacrity than from mere grass, and this makes a faster game…..A heartfelt prayer for a cleaned-up playing ground arises every Thursday. When will it be answered?’

In 1913 the School obtained a set of new jersey’s. The School was able to field two teams, although the Second XV contained two masters. The First XV played DHS that year but DHS ‘were too much for our fledglings’. By all accounts, the side nevertheless acquitted itself well. The two masters in the Second XV ‘played well and gave the boys a hot time, on the whole’.

School matches vs DHS were played at the Lord’s Ground (at Durban Rugby Club) due to the state of the Glenwood pitch. It was there that Glenwood won their first game vs DHS in 1925. Official annual fixtures only commenced in 1922. In 1923 JR Sullivan a New Zealand Áll Blacks’ trialist, who had emigrated from New Zealand, joined the Glenwood staff and took over as Head Coach. He is the one who introduced the 7 man two-three-two scrum to Glenwood rugby.

Traditions

  • School Bell Ringing – It’s tradition each year for the boarders at each school to both protect the school bell and try and ring the opposing schools bell. It’s usually been just a bit of fun, but a few times in the past it’s ended up in a fight with damage caused at each school. Old Boys usually involved, so not sure if this tradition continues today. Also, the 1stteam usually use the opposition school blazer as matt in the week prior to the game.

  • War Cries – ‘Swat the Fly’ coming from Glenwood, zzzzz ‘Swat the Fly’. DHS repost with Í would rather go to School than go to Glenwood High’. DHS is known as ‘School’, war cries can be as basic as just shouting ‘School!, School! School!’. Both schools have JimolayoJi as their main war cry, in different formats. Glenwood usually sing Óh Flower of Glenwood’, a version of Óh Flower of Scotland’ at half-time following the bands performance. DHS have more recently started to spell DHS within the schoolboys using their blazers. Glenwood repost with Áll you see is green and white, ooh ah Glenwood’, by opening and closing their blazers. Shouts with large pauses of ‘Green Machine, Green Machine, Green Machine’, precede the 1st teams arrival on the field, usually from the stairs at Glenwood and DHS, but now from the Ivan Clarke Pavilion change rooms for the past 5 years or so at Glenwood, running under a Green Machine banner. Both schools have a war-cry leader dressed in a long tail-coat and bearing a long school flag to direct the warcries.

  • Hanging Carrots from Posts – a tradition started in the 80’s, when Old Boys hang carrots on the opposition schools post.

  • Mascots – DHS have a Bear dressed in a DHS uniform, name unknown. Glenwood have ‘Stormin Norman’ a grasshopper that is placed at the halfway line next to the DHS Bear, who sits in a deck chair.

Why Grasshoppers and Horseflies?

Nicknames are shrouded in time, but one of the explanations is as follows; In the years between the two great wars, many of the properties on the Berea near DHS still had stables for horses and whenever there are horses there are horseflies! A similar problem existed at Glenwood, but with locusts. The locusts, or grasshoppers, had markings similar to the colours of the Glenwood rugby jersey. So bad was the locust problem at one stage, the detention punishment involved catching a bottle full of locusts before being allowed to go home!

    @h2o:

    No stab at the referees – it’s the truth. Most of us honestly don’t know how to ref the scrum. I consider myself a little better than most only because I played in the front row, but it’s a different science nowadays than when I played. The best ever lesson you’ll get on how to ref the scrum will be from Steve La Marque – he played front row, has coached front row’s at premier level and is a former referee himself! Athough, like me, he hasn’t passed a bleep test in many years and also, like me, is an honorary life member of the 22m club………… 8-O 8-O :mrgreen:

    Mr grassfixation.i think the g/wood packs weighs close 900 k. With tall timber of 2.04 m etc they should easily breach the 900 kg mark?

    @h2o: the 1.5m rule and all this other kak like hinging, not binding, boring etc….just let the buggers scrum. Maybe I’m old school but it seemed to work better without all the rules. I remember when there were no rules at the breakdown, Wahl Bartmann had a field day. Ahhh, the good old days. You say 700kg, more like 800kg plus these days at schools. I think the Glenwood pack with Palvie is around 830kg.

    @Grasshopper: what has changed? Crouch bind scrum!!!!! or what ever it might be now….. in the old days it would be “Kom hier nou gaan ons skrum” down you go scrummy feeds ball straight and who ever is stronger wins the ball…. now you have close on 700 kgs being held back with feet positioned so that it is impossible to stay upright… and then you pull the trigger by saying scrum :lol: :lol: :lol:

    @h2o: Agreed on all points, but in my day (early 90’s) and prior to that there was no rule if I remember correctly. We won a few games due to pushing the opposition back over the try line. I remember only one neck injury is 5 years. So really these days schools sides should be like league, 15 boys of similar size running hard. Like 15 flanks running the field.

    @Grasshopper: yes agree but we also need to look at the safety… there are various factors that need to be taken into consideration here like… experience of both front rows… some of these boys converted from 2-1 or even from flank to prop and had not played there their entire rugby career… do they know what to do to protect themselves in cases of being buckled…. you might say what is he doing there at this level if he cant handle the pressure but they are there and are there in every team…. secondly are our referees competent enough at this level to know when to stop scrumming or when it is a safety concern. ie 1 scrumming in or 3 scrumming onto 2….(not taking a stab at the referees now) I would suggest to accommodate a fair contest in scrums allow pushing but stop once the ball reaches the receiving teams no 8 or locks feet to prevent injuries. It is a fact that some schools have a lack of quality props and then the strongest or biggest guy gets thrown in and we expect him to scrum against Reinier for 70 minutes…. somewhere it will become uncontested if that is the case.

    @h2o: It was such a clash of styles, DHS running everything vs Glenwood forward play. I still think it really is unfair at this level to stop pushing in scrums etc. It makes the game far less exciting. I understand it’s for safety but these boys will play proper scrum rules next year and should be playing them now to avoid worse injury next year. Glenwood could have won many of the DHS scrums if they were allowed to push. It’s a bit like Aussie rugby, the scrum is just a reset…

    @Grasshopper: I feel that GW needed to play that tipe of game v DHS. They were bigger and more physical. Loosing Palvie was a big loss. Bash Bash sucked in the defenders and opened out wide imo. Palvie always had 3-4 defenders on him as did JJ. It was when you started playing expansive that School started thriving. In 2013 the current 1st team(Gr12) and then u15 side had a coach at DHS who was adamant that turnover ball was key to success and practiced the counter to perfection, i see it coming through…. he was then said to be a bad coach :roll:

    @GreenBlooded: Couldn’t agree with @h2o more. Watched Ville vs Northwood and couldn’t decide which was the worst coached side. Ville should have won by double, but didn’t. On paper, this side has the potential to beat any side. But everyone seems to be playing as an individual, not because they want to, but because they have not been given any structure.

    @GreenBlooded: It is easy….. the basic foundation has not been laid…. you cannot try and play 7’s rugby in a 15 man game. The ball goes from line-out/scrum to the centre who makes contact…. no one to seal/contest breakdown…. they had 20min of scrum practice before the MC game….. your ball carriers are told to stand wide and wait for the ball no specific instruction of who is main ball carriers. I think 2 video sessions the whole season. I think you see where I am going with this. The coaching is well below standard and this is no reflection on RN abilities or credentials. I just think there are sinister forces behind the scenes that hamper the setups. It is sad because the failure to plan had cost a couple of boys the chance to play higher…..plane simple BAD COACHING….. there you go I have bitched enough now :lol: :lol: :lol:

    As a rugby man to the core and an accomplished coach – what is your take on what’s potting with Ville this season? Is most out of character. Everyone knows I’m not the biggest Vile fan that’s ever lived, but even for me it’s sad to see them struggling like this. Root cause analysis?

    @h2o: Ville will always be a massive fixture, after DHS geographically Ville is next closest. Also, because of the competition between the schools and OBs to be the most well rounded school in Durban. Ville have been underperforming but will lift themselves for the derby vs Glenwood at Ville. Like the DHS fixture I feel form counts for nothing. On paper Glenwood should take it comfortably but the game isn’t played on paper. Boys will want to try stay injury free before CW so I fear they might hold back. It looked that way vs DHS!

    @Grasshopper: Boishaai have still got 3 big matches left. I know our southern suburbs rivals don’t like it but it’s reality. Oakdale, Boland landbou and GIM. Number 1 is there to be won by Grey, GIM,Oakdale,Boishaai, Glenwood and Affies. Yes Affies lost 2 but mathematical still. Requires Oakdale beat Boishaai, GIM beat Oakdale, Landbou beat Boishaai and GIM beat Boishaai with Themselves beating Glenwood and Glenwood beating Grey. They would get number 1 on ratio. Beet would have to show his formula. But I think Grey only plays 13 which isn’t healthy for mathematics if you have lost 1.

    @odie15: But saying that sometimes in derbies the players lose their thinking capabilities and revert back to trying to overpower the opposition. With the scrum rules as they are you cannot overpower teams at school level, especially in the scrums. So you almost have to play 7’s style, run it. DHS proved that to be successful.

    @odie15: Agreed, it’s a healthy environment to have at least 15 schools up there. I didn’t like the gameplan Glenwood had on the weekend, to try and bash DHS to pieces. Our guys are skillful enough to run into space. We need to play more like that. Boishaai will take No1 due to quality of opposition.

    @BrotherBear: We have been playing against the giant of u/17 schoolboy rugby for the past 3 years already. Although beating Glenwood is a nice scalp to get tackling JJ is also one. At u/17 level it is 1 each with 1 draw at age group level. At u/18 I think it is 4 – 0 to Monnas. On recent form I call the game 50/50. Monnas maybe 1% better change due to homeground advantage but believe me the Monnas players are ready to stop a charging elephant on Saterday. It is the most anticipated game on the Monnas calender each year.

How do you keep it together without sacrificing some. Reckon we should have all games prior to CW done and dusted. Currently left very uncomfortable.

    @Greenman: It is not a rule but rather a sort of agreement. I know there were issues in the Cape schools about the squad system as it was deemed unfair to schools who do not have the same depth as other schools. I think as n parent I will also not be happy if my son only gets a few minutes every week and not proper game time. You’re schoolboy career is only 2 to 3 years at best with most only getting a shot at 1st team for 1 year. I know it still happens sometimes that 1 player may only bench if the starting player carries an injury or is not fully fit but that is on the odd occasion.

    @Grasshopper: reference to your top 10 I think PRG will struggle to stay in there lost 4 now. Top 5 also difficult few big weeks ahead. Oakdale has Boishaai,GIM consecutively. Glenwood has hmmmm Monnas, Affies and Grey. Stern test for Glenwood. But what a year. At least it’s not a who’s playing for second place anymore like years before. We have 2 unbeaten teams. About 5 teams on 1 loss. Few on 2 losses. But the race for number 1 is in the hands of about 5 teams still. Awesome stuff. Wouldn’t mind a year like this ending in a week long knockout for number 1 spot. The thought is great.

    @Hooit, @Grasshopper: To play in any game against any of the top school sides, and not be fit, is looking for trouble. Whether you not in shape or not properly conditioned, the chances of getting hurt increases tremendously. Cannot speak for the player mentioned, as I did not see the game but I wrote about it on the blog earlier in the year. Have seen quite a few injuries this year, due to abovementioned “poor conditioning”. Not to say all injuries due to it though – not at all.
    @Hooit: The way some of those Lions U16 players tackled their much larger opponents at GK last year should still be reverberating in the minds of JJ VDM and his mates. Don’t see you guys having to worry at all.

    @Grasshopper: I believe we had the mix right in Japan. Thirty guys to pick from. Now the bench has to play 2 nd team and then bench for the first. So the bench has already had a 70 minute game prior to bench. We also cant bring up the big guns as impact players due to this. Not sure if this is school boy rugby rules?

    @Hooit: Not sure what his injury status is, but it didn’t look positive on Saturday. He might do well to give up this season, recover properly and look at targeting 2017 in the Sharks Juniors to make his mark. Must be hard for him as we have 5 massive fixtures ahead, Monnas, Westville, College, Affies and Grey Bloem. All very important to a player, especially in his matric year and not playing Craven Week

    Ruben van Heerden and Cobus Wiese were both ruled out of the third match for SA Schools through concussion and were replaced by South African Schools ‘A’ captain Hendré Stassen and loose-forward Zain Davids, while Marco Palvie was called up to the ‘A’ squad.

I can assure u that Monnas holds Palvie in high regards as any person with some, not even much, rugby knowledge knows what he can do. Since last year when it became known to Monnas that Palvie is still part of the Glenwood team this year has it become a highlight and nightmare all in one for us. The change to play against him will/would be a great test of any player’s physical ability.

    @Greenman: I know feeding the troll keeps them alive, but to degrade kids by number or name is just not called for. Those sorts of comments are read by the players and can knock their confidence. Realistically Paarl Boys will end up No1, Grey Bloem 2, Affies 3 and it will be a bun-fight for the rest. I will be very happy if Glenwood end up in the Top 10. Oakdale, Paarl Gim, Garsies, EG Jansen, Paul Roos, Grey PE etc are all up there. Unfortunately we can’t all play each other. For me Boishaai have the hardest schedule hence deserve the No1 ranking no matter what happens in the next few weeks. Glenwood hopefully will learn from the DHS outing and come our blazing vs Monnas. We need to use our backs more. DHS showed what can be done when a player runs into gaps rather then at the player. Our gameplan looks a little old school.

He probably does need to do some conditioning but I’m sure he and his coaches know that. In terms of the team, ask anyone in KZN, the Glenwood boys are usually the most well conditioned. @BiasedDHSDad: All good. :lol: It is just that I had a discussion with Skywalker about how to turn the tables around and the need for reserve depth and consistency. There must a rugby culture and the boys must want to play. A classic example are the current Westville U14 age group. From B down to Fs they have each only lost one game ( to Affies). Take Affies out of the equation and they would all be unbeaten. There are kids in the C team with unbelievable hands and vision( something the 1sts could learn from :mrgreen: ). On the other side of the coin we have Glenwood’s U15 age group with a very strong A team but the other 3 teams being given a tough time by the likes of Kearsney ( with all due respect to K :lol: ) What happens when there is a loss of form, injury or boys just leave? My prediction is that after GK next year schools especially in the Noord Vaal better hold on to their boys very tightly. :mrgreen:

More importantly you have 2 teams and the support team lost by 60 to Westville’s C team. What happens when there are injuries and loss of form. With the U16 it is more than just desire … they are bizarre in their fluctuating form. The poor coaches must be tearing their hair out. And the B team is the same … play like a team one week and beat Glenwood, and the week before lost badly to Hillcrest — go figure!

    Talking of the B team their progression against Glenwood has been interesting … in U14 the game was called just after halftime (I think the ref’s multiplication was wrong as it should have been called before the break), in U15 they got to midway through the second half. In the first game against Glenwood this year it was just a thrashing but they reached the final whistle, and then this weekend in the second game of the year they beat the Glenwood side (albeit v the C teams each time, but there is a progression).

    Jeez…some of the debate on this site is worse than the worst rugby any of the schools could ever play. Not a lot of intellect in some of the comments here. Star, the DHS U16 side is very much a jekyll and Hyde team and Westville saw them at their worst. Not taking anything away from the winners but don’t try and predict their result from other results… They can beat a good side easily and then get hammered by a weak team.

    @Grasshopper: Westville U16A beat DHS 46-0 and the C team beat DHS B team 60-0. Those were the only 2 games played. We will have see how that translates in 2 years time. The Westville U16A form line is however all over the place as they have lost to both Kearsney and Hilton. I agree with you regarding not enough reward for scrum dominance. In all the matches I watched (against College) from U14 through to the U16A 2nds and 1sts Westville were completely dominant in the scrums and yet were conceding penalties and “holding” back under instruction from the refs. Just does not seem right but those are the rules at the moment.

I thought his quick offloads were excellent. He is still young and learning his trade. Also our young hooker is learning to contain his emotions. Don’t like it either – but is the law of the game. The 1.5m push in U19 rugby. The scrum had been legislated to death. All in the name of safety. When I played there were hardly any scrum laws, engagement procedures etc and I don’t recall a string of catastrophic injuries.

    A general observation, Glenwood were told to stop pushing in the scrums a few times. I understand for safety schools can’t push more than 2 or 3m BUT in rugby scrum dominance is a huge factor. Many penalties & ball is won from this. Don’t you think it disadvantages the stronger pack?

    @Grasshopper: I’m sure it would be upwards from now onwards. Just a pity with the injuries. Hope the boys recover well and get to play the rest of the games.

    I remember a few weeks back I was caretaker for the 2nd team (soccer) against the green machines and we earned a sloppy 2-0 victory as well. We are not that bad in the football department :mrgreen:

    Very tight game … Glenwood looked rusty after a few weeks break and had their handling been better they probably would have won relatively easily, but DHS had their chances. Two missed conversions, one against the upright and a rifle straight penalty that dropped just under the bar could have changed the winner. And they had a penalty advantage right in front of the poles with two minutes to go but then lost the ball after advantage was over. Even with my bias I have to say the better team won but they were better by the winning margin!!

    Something that was really pleasing was the huddle between the two U16A teams after the match. There were 17 players in the Grant Khomo Week team from the two sides and the DHS captain suggested they join for a prayer after the game and then asked the Glenwood captain to lead the prayer. The fact it was a spontaneous gesture coming from the boys made it very special.

    True spirit of sport …

    @Hooit: Palvie didn’t look match fit at all, maybe carrying an injury. At least Kevin Smit can play next week, if not injured too. Really missed our first choice flyhalf as Maduna & Holtshauzen have formed a great centre partnership. They should really call in Bossr for a few games, although SA under 19 cricket might have said no!

    @Hooit: superrugby has not got my attention anymore. Well the Stormers haven’t. I believe coaches have ruined SA rugby as a whole. We have been let down the public has. My interest is in the school boys that have joined the fray lately. Namely the du Plessis cousin’s now. Schickerling and up n coming Ruben de Villiers. Duimpie will be special in the future. But our biggest challenge is to drive senior management and coaching out of the country. How I don’t know they own the public’s product somehow when it went from amateur to professional they didn’t buy it. They somehow got it.

    @Playa: Very impressive indeed. I do remember me mentioning Steven Hall and Terence Knickelbein a few times, two guys I remember from the early 90’s. To lose only 21 games in 10 years is some feat, certainly up there with the best schools in SA. Those are the years my old teacher Rob Hutchison (Hutchie) must have been at Dale as he mentioned often how great they were when he was at school. He is in his late 60’s/early 70’s by now so probably about right. Rob is now a Glenwood legend, having taught there for 30 years plus.

    @Grasshopper: The period 1955-1969 was a golden period for Dale. The 60’s as a decade come a close 2nd to the 90’s (part of the 2nd golden period which ran from 1987 to 2000)

    1960’s – P180 W145 D14 L21 – 80% win; 2 Springboks (HO De Villiers & M.Jennings – CB Jennings’ son)

    1990’s – P207 W169 D5 L33 – 82% win; 10 Craven Week Reps in 1993. Current coach Grant Griffith and current assistant coach Barry Hayidakis were in the CW team. A center pairing that began at under 10.

    @Playa: OK, so must be one of Dale’s best ever in the old era, so prior to 1990.

    Extract from a Glenwood Rugby Program;

    The 1965 side is still considered by most Old Boys and KZN pundits as the best ever produced by Glenwood, playing 14 and winning 14, scoring 283 points while only 50 points were scored against. Seven players represented Natal Schools that year and included great names like Kevin Sclanders (capped 3 times for Natal Schools), Hylton Aylward (capped 3 times for Natal Schools & Captain in 1964 & 1965), Dennis Morrissey (capped 2 times for Natal Schools), R.D Shaw, E Sclanders, A.J Delport, A.R Wallace, D.M Lawson and C.R Chambers.

    I think only College in 1987 produced more Natal players in 1 year, around 10!!!

    @Playa: Oh yes, got clarification from my uncle on the Dale game in 1965, verbatim;

    Yes we were beaten by Dale College 5-0. I remember the game very well. I had my ear almost pulled off. It was right in the last minutes of the game when they claimed a try but I could see that the ball had been lost forward. I immediately complained bitterly to the ref who was a teacher at the school and also remember telling their players what I thought of them. When the game recommenced I received the ball from the kick-off and had at least 2 guys tackle me. I felt one of them pull at my face and only later realised that my ear was bleeding and hanging from head! Yes – so I remember the game very well. My best friend was also concussed in the match.
    We therefore were only unbeaten in Natal.”

    The story of guys missing was from his son, my cousin.

    Great history and a fascinating tale regarding the origins of the Grasshopper and Horseflies names. At least they were not conjured up in some brothel :mrgreen: There’s no substitute for tradition.

    Watched the televised derby some years back – 2012 I think – and even though DHS got the stick, the spirit in which the game was played and the atmosphere in which it was played was incredible. Hope to catch the same vibe this Saturday. It would be nice to see DHS pull off a win. All the best to both schools!

    @Rugger fan: Yeah, it is very sad indeed. The smaller schools rugby is dwindling away. My dad was at DHS between 1966 and 1969, he told me DHS had 12 Open teams, but then they didn’t have under 16’s. Still up to G team in under 13 and under 15, so 7 + 7 + 12 = 26. Ten more teams than DHS have today. However I think the standard at the top has improved drastically though, so A and 1st team. I reckon 3rd teams of today would have beaten 1st teams of the 60’s.

    @Grasshopper: Too true Grassie. Good rivalries make good rugby.

    A shocking stat a week back when College OB got together with the Kearsney OB (hey – sounds like a trend :roll: )

    In the 1980’s there were close to 550 SBR teams every Saturday in KZN – now it is around 200!

    So schools like Queensburgh, Gert Maritz, Ixopo, Werda etc. are just not there – or not fielding many teams – and the days of even the traditional schools like GW, DHS fielding 30 odd teams is also gone.

    Without decent opponents – more boys will end up playing soccer, hockey or even computer games!

    So great to have such a long history. Last night had a Great evening at College Rovers club as the DHS old boys and Maritzburg college Old boys got together to celebrate their rugby rivalry going back to 1910.

    Jops Robson and Jeremey Oddy were great speakers reminising about the likes of Skonk, Bill Paine, AS Langley, Des Joubert and many many more.

    This all after some over 30s and over 40s tag rugby (glad to say College continued their winning streak (over 30s win and a draw in the over40s). Skill levels certainly dropped somewhat as the age increased :mrgreen:

    The DHS streak of 18 wins was over 9 years when they played twice per annum. Glenwood’s 10 game streak has been over 10 years, so they have the longest streak in terms of time.
