From BHP:

Waterkloof was downgraded to a Category 4 after this seasons performance so far, so all teams that played against them will have a slight adjustment in their average. Glenwood still not on as they have yet to play more than required number of games. Will feature after this coming Saturday. We will upgrade another 3 teams to cat 5 status from next week who is doing well so teams that played against them will also benefit another 0.5 to 1 point. This will be the normal mid-season adjustment after teams have played more than 7 or 8 matches.

@Hooit: Man, I love your honest answer.

Been there when I still had sons playing schoolboy rugby. Personally I think that the rankings enhances the rugby-playing experience for the boys, as long as it is seen in the context you pointed out.

However, I think it enhances the experience for the proud – and obviously involved – fathers even more!

Ironically, the relevancy of playing good rugby/being part of a good school rugby team basically disappears for 95% of schoolboys once they go to a tertiary institution or enter real life.

Nonetheless, the nice memories and/or bragging rights will still be there 30 years from now!

@Herakles: When my son joined Monnas in grade 8 they had an early season ranking of 2. It was something new to rugby fanatical fathers and we brought it up in any and every conversation. We even started measurring the quality of the coaching against the rankings and wanted heads to roll as soon as we were outside the top 5. We then realise, once we got used to it, that it is just an interesting discussion point and nothing else. What is actually more important is whether you have at least 1 point more than the other team when the final whistle blows irrelevant of who is ranked where. People do not remember the rankings after a while but that big derby win or the cup on the display stand will be there forever or even that near loss against for a small school against a big school. Rankings is just a discussion point for rugby fans as Kim Kardashian’s butt is to some. It is irrelevant.

@BrotherBear: Thanks for the reply – viewpoint noted with interest.

I especially agree with your contention that on any given day teams of relatively similar strength can beat one another – the bounce of the ball and some good fortune will always have its influence on results in sports!

    @Heracles: my 2c.
Any thing in life could have a positive and a negative impact on a person. It is not the “thing” that is the issue, but rather the way people handle and manage the “thing”. One extreme example is nuclear power. It can be harnessed safely to provide energy for the benefit of humankind OR it could be used to blow up cities and destroy – Hiroshima. The rivalry between schools have been around for decades, with some excellent rugby and sport being dished up, but there has also been hooliganism and vandalism during some lead-ups. Do we now ban all nuclear power and inter schools due to the possible negative impacts. No, we rather use the opportunity to educate and grow knowledge.
A ranking table is just an indicator of relative performance and perceived as such by most players, coaches and supporters. My belief is that on any day the teams, 10 above and ten below a specific ranking could either win or lose the game against the specific ranked team.
Pressure on players come from much more direct and for that matter, diverse sources. I leave that discussion open.

Dit bring my by my eintlike punt uit.

@jakes: Hi Jakes, I remember that team! wow they were strong. A certain Louis Luddik was there too if I’m not mistaken?

I remember watching the Valke at Craven Week that year, they had a great team.

@Gimoldboy: never knew Paarl gym had less than 600 boys. I was under the impression they are about the size of Affies and Grey. They are really doing well then year in and out. Speaks of good rugby coaching and structures just like EG Jansen.

@Grasshopper: Thanks Grasshopper. You are right. It is just more than 10 years when EG Jansen made headlines in 2004 and starting to be noticed on the rugby field. EG Jansen became the 01st team to beat the mighty Affies in the Super 16 series, now called Tuks, and knocking them out in the quarter finals. Francois Uys from the Cheetahs played for this EG Jansen team who made history.Affies were unbeaten in this series before then and won title every year ad far as I remember.

@Grasshopper: Yes, about 60-70% of the boys play rugby. And yes, Landbou also does an amazing job. The bigger schools and especially English schools tend to have bigger and better hockey structures as well.

At the end of the day we should just be grateful for such an intriguing SBR season up until now. I’ve seen some epic games and most of the big derbies are still coming.

@Gimoldboy: Gim does amazingly well considering it’s co-ed and only has 550 boys, I bet 80% of the boys play rugby though. Boland Landbou is even more of a miracle, probably only 300 boys and 90% participation in rugby. The problem at the big boys schools with over 1,000 boys is that they only have around 40% participating in rugby. Agreed on the derby, like any derby, it’s 50/50 and form counts for nothing…

@jakes: baie geluk EG Jansen.

Daai dag is 50-50.

As good as Gim might be it does make a massive difference in not playing Affies and Grey.

I think on talent the Grey team will beat most teams and its hard to see them being below a very very good grey team.

    Interschools will be fun.

Well done EG Jansen for being in the top 5. A school from the East Rand who has about A THIRD the amount of boys than most of the TOP 10 rugby schools. Especially the top 4..Brilliant work being done there to compete with the big boys of SA schools rugby
