@Grasshopper: I chatted to Jaco – he is recovering from an injury which is probably why he was dropped. I think he said he still had some to go before being cleared to play.
@Mike: Not sure Mike but: last year Brandon Thomson was at 10 for the Baby Boks and kicked most of the time…under instruction IMO because during the season he played for WP and they scored numerous tries… he didn’t kick nearly that much. Therefore I don’t think it really matters what type of flyhalf is selected…he’ll always play “under instruction” ….if that makes sense
@Andre T: Dit is korrek.
@Greenman: So waar duidelik het sy baie blootstelling gekry
Misgis ek my of is daar nou 2 jaar in n ry geen Grey Bloem verteenwoordiging?
Does anyone know if Curwin Bosch is going to play at 15 or 10 at the Sharks. It seems Theron picks the same mold of flyhalf year in and year out.
@Grasshopper: Sorry, I cannot give you a “thumbs up”, but there are many.
Sorry if Jaco Coetzee can’t make it then merit has nothing to do with it!
An indication of where SA rugby is heading. Merit plays very little role and we should stop pretending that it does.
Very unfortunate for Jaco Coetzee, Michael Brink and De Wet Bezuidenhout. Three players who could still be vital.
@Slam: Cant agree with you anymore these guys will not be on the same level seen from any perspective to compete with the European and Australasian guys due to the total lack of game time and and and
@ROOIBUL: I assume that you have some sort of link with UJ Young guns? If I may ask?
I think it’s time for new couches at U20 level. Dawie Theronosaurus likes the STAMPKAR rugby to much. The game has changed a lot and NZ have proofed this already. We need players that have excellent ball skills and that can run around the opponent and also losies with enough speed to do cross defense. This is why SA lose a lot of young rugby talent yearly, because of this type of system. The picking of this squat, how?
Dawie Theronosaurus quoted “Unfortunately, we will not be able to play training matches this year against the Varsity Cup Dream team or Argentina. That has resulted in a change in our familiar approach of the past two years or so. However, we are planning several matches against local club sides and hope to finalise those fixtures shortly.”
So these guys are going into a tournament without much game time as a team under their belts.
As Beet mentioned the norther hemisphere teams have played in an U20 6N, Australia and NZ play in a pre JWC U20 tournament. Australia have also got a Super Rugby U20 competition to identify players. I just don’t think the Versity Cup and Young Guns competition is adequate preparation.
Congrats to the guys selected for this “massive group”
Not sure what they trying to achieve with such a big group as I think that the crux of the squad has already been identified.
@ROOIBUL: Jammer ek het jou gladnie herken gister……het my heeldag gepla wie dit was en eers later my bygeval……en ek was doodnugter…..sorry hoor
I think Hayden Tharratt is very unlucky to miss out. Good luck to all those selected.
@beet: krag teen krag. Ja. Your suggestion is the best and most practical for u20 level and will give all boys a good opportunity across the board I am convinced. Not truely a good view of what we saw on u19 level last year.
Kwartlyn ek stem heeltemal saam jou.
@beet: A bit like the old Springbok trials, loved those games….possibles vs probables etc
@ROOIBUL: it’s a problem I have been talking about for years. Like England has the 6N u20, we need a proper strength vs strength u20 tournament at the start of the year to use as the assessment for prospective players to make sure nothing slips through the net. It could be as simple as setting aside 2 separate match days on different dates at one or two stadiums where 4 games could take place one after the other on each match day. Theron would then see all the talent under one roof in match conditions and be far better placed to make informed selection decisions.
Well all I can say, why no player from the UJ Young Guns team(like James)
If you didn’t see UJ YG playing this year you will not know what I am talking about, their lowest score was against Tuks YG team.
The biggest problem with the U20 squat, is that the U18 Elite squat where picked automatically. That’s also player that was inform almost two year back and the U20 couches like the big STAMPKAR manne en van daai selfde manne het na 15 min opgegooi toe UJ teen TUKS YG gespeel het.
Wat UJ 42-31 gewen het.
@kwartlyn: James Venter from the Lions too, where is he?
2015 GLRU Under 19 Player of the Year – James Venter
Tristan Dixon?
@beet: I don’t think Papier’s mom will allow him to miss 2 months of schooling during his matric year.
@kwartlyn: Stem saam oor Brenden Verster.
Ngonidzashe Chidoma – did not play the entire 2015 u19 CC in spite of being a contracted player
Jerry Danquah – does not seem to have been able to recapture his school days glory after knee injury
Embrose Papier – still at school but there has to be more than a slight chance now that Theron will consider him for u20 JWC
Michael Kumbirai – one of WP u19’s most relied on players last year. Can only think he is injured.
Wandisile Simelane – Still at school and still u18
Hacjivah Dayimani – Still at school and u19, maybe an SA u20 chance next year for him
Tyreeq February – u19 at Lions this year, maybe an SA u20 chance next year for him
Cyprian Nkomo – u19 at WPRI this year, maybe an SA u20 chance next year
Kwanda Dimaza – Still at school and u19, maybe an SA u20 chance next year
Ngwekazi Khanya Ncusane – at school and still u18, currently wearing a double digit jersey number on tour
Kamva Dilima – u19 at Kings this year, maybe an SA u20 chance next year
Mashao Mukhari – u19 at Bulls this year, maybe an SA u20 chance next year
Embrose Papier is gr 12 in Garsfontein
Where are the following?
Ngonidzashe Chidoma
Jerry Danquah
Embrose Papier
Michael Kumbirai
Wandisile Simelane
Hacjivah Dayimani
Tyreeq February
Cyprian Nkomo
Kwanda Dimaza
Ngwekazi Khanya Ncusane
Kamva Dilima
Mashao Mukhari
…..?
From what I understand the final squad will consist of 28 players and although never expected to be made official there is talk that the colour split will have to be 50:50. So 14 previously disadvantaged players and 14 currently disadvantaged players.
There is good reason to believe this is true, so if one looks at the actual squad right now, there are a few bottlenecks and shortages in positions which will add to the selection difficulties.
Of the PD players there is
1 prop
1 hooker
1 lock who is about 1.95m
8 loose-forwards
No scrumhalf (not sure if Jantjies injured)
1 flyhalf
1 centre
6 wings
2 fullbacks
So there is severe congestion in some possies and worrisome shortages in others.
@Grasshopper…yes with James Venter.
@kcob: Ah with James Venter the flank? Patience is a virtue…
Hes at Lions Hopper. Thought my guy might have a shot but alas? All good though.??
Does anyone know where Kenny Van Niekerk is?
Well done boys! Good luck and fly the flag high. Hope Bosch recovers; has only had 2 games in about 7 for our Impi. Good luck Impi taking on the TUT tomorrow for critical points difference win to get promoted to varsity cup 2017…??
James Hall you give it horns buddy!
@Barry: Barberton?
Well done to all picked, but particularly well done to the 3 x Glenwood Old boys in the mix :-)
