Stephan Jordaan, last year’s under 16A coach is the new Paul Roos 1st XV head coach, replacing Hein Kriek who resigned after the 2015 season in order to take up a coaching post at the Pumas.
The ever-reliable Jordaan is not new to the post. He has been Paul Roos 1st XV coach before. He therefore understands the ethos of the school as well as the rugby expectations and pressures that come with being in the school rugby limelight from the start until the finish of every demanding season.
Lucas Roodtman will stay on as the assistant coach and will be responsible for the backs.
Frans van Niekerk, a gentleman who has been proudly associated with the Maroon Machine over a long period of time, remains on as the head of rugby at the 150 year old school named after the first Springbok rugby captain.
Van Niekerk coached the 1st XV between 1990 and 2005 with along with Jacques Hanekom, a wise rugby man. From that time up until the end of 2015, Hanekom has applied his skills towards helping Western Province Rugby. He has since left WP and now heads up the coaching division of the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport (SAS). There is a double bonus for Paul Roos rugby as a result of this. Firstly Hanekom’s wealth of knowledge will be available to the school as he will act as their coaching director, working very closely with all the coaches including the 1st XV coaches. Secondly the full compliment of SAS resources will be available to Paul Roos.
Frans van Niekerk said of Hanekom :
