I must say, I am enjoying the comments re old players and what they did on and off the field. Still remember lots of them.

#Loubser – Jou pa was my held as jong seun!!! Hy was n fenominale rugbyspeler.

    @Middies pa (Comment #33)

Daardie dae was klubrugby baie groot in die ou SO TVL.

@Chronicle (Comment #32) so funny…not the fighting stories, but all the memories. Refereeing has improved a LOT since the old Suidoos days. Kaya himself as a younger man got many requests to referee a certain school’s 2nd team games (before there where enough Union Refs for big school 2nd teams). The standard really is much better, and Refs get moderated, adjudicated, promoted etc. so the referees mostly do a good job despite usually the losing side’s complaints. When I used to ref those days, I got plenty stick from the sidelines time to time. One day I turned to look who this guy is complaining yet again about my (correct) decisions…only to see it was Kaya’s own Uncle yelling…Lol, true. I don’t think he recognised me.

@Chronicle (Comment #32)Things changed a lot since those times. I remember it well. The home school/club had to provide the ref. We had a club game where the ref stopped the game due to punching and after he stopped the game, he joined the fight. These days most of the refs are appointed by the union except the lower teams that still gets teachers/coaches from both the two participating schools to ref the games.

@Middies pa (Comment #29) You don’t understand. I went to school in the old SE Tvl. I am talking about how all the schools in the old SE Tvl were affected by weird (home town) referee decisions when playing each other. I am asking whether it is still the case. Did the refereeing improve or not?

Agreed. Whenever a big city school loses here, it has to be the Mpumalanga refs, according to many “city” commentators on here. Little credit to the winning team. This season Nelspruit plays 5 home games, 10+ away games. And away games for Nelspruit entails 5 to 7 hours bus drives just getting there and then sleeping over. When the boys play at home, they relish the oppurtunity.
Congrats to Middelburg, it was a pleasant surprise to see the Menlo results.

@Chronicle (Comment #26)Unfair comment. Middies won 10 of the 13 games and the lower teams were reffed by teachers from the two schools. I watch club rugby on a regular basis in Pretoria and my blood boils every time on the lack of consistancy by the BB refs.

@Chronicle (Comment #26) No, I have little to no experience of SETvl refs, but I’ve heard a story about a player asking the ref to be excused from the field for a short while, who then went into the pavilion to beat up a spectator who called him a sheep thieve!

@tzavosky (Comment #16) Menlo losing against Middelburg. Wow, was this another case of “the revenge of the Mpumalanga refs?” I’ve posted before, in the old South Eastern Transvaal the refs mostly decided the winner and loser. Even if it was 2 teams in SE Tvl. We never knew whether we would win or lose, no matter whether we were the weaker or stronger team. We encountered new rules every other week. Like a penalty on the 22m when the kick-off was directly into touch. Or when an opponent was struggling to get up after a tackle, the penalty was for tackling too hard. I am asking, not blaming!

Just the festivals on neutral soil. This is their first one at a big opponent.
Stellies have 3 outstanding backs IMO – van Biljon, Mongie and Roode and Steffen is decent but in the big games if feels like its the way their forwards interact with the backs that make things happen rather than pure backline strike plays or X-factor. So when the likes of Molnar, Brink and Coetze come up with big plays, that’s when the backline finds really attacking form. Otherwise its really Mongie and van Biljon winning 1v1s or Roode pulling off something special that defies the amount time and space he has in front of him.

The Stellenberg-Wynberg game is on Friday, not Saturday. That will make it three games in a week (Saturday, Monday, Friday) for Stellenberg. Playing three games in a week went pretty pear-shaped for the previous top teams that tried it this year…

Hilton Michaelhouse should be a cracker! Both teams are having good seasons and weather looks like it is playing along – so a great fixture in the making. Will give Hilton the edge having home ground advantage this weekend – HC by 5.
