Sorry. So far KZN are thru to the main Cup after beating Border, drawing with Boland and losing narrowly to the Bulls.

@star: I know it was tingue in cheek, no worries there.

Clarke was not the founder of College, he was the 3rd headmaster of the school (16 years after it was founded) but is the most recognised probably. mainly because he was head during the move from Longmarket Street to the current campus.

Wikipedia is nicely up to date and provides a decent background. Jimeloyo Ji is a good source of history, primarily around rugby and “For Hearth and Home” for the general history of the school.

@ Gungets-The reference to Ryan Moon was a bit of fun as I have a similar surname. My sense of humour was obviously misdirected.I was going to ask about the history of Clark the founder of College but am a bit shy now as A/B might knock my block off.

@star: Not claiming top of the pile – just a win against DHS.

Last time I looked soccer was a team game. Have Messi and Ronaldo changed all that?

@ Gungets-What was the head to head between College and Westville this year? To be top of the pile does not mean just winning one tournament(is this a first for College?).I also think College won because of that fellow Ryan Moon.

I’m not claiming that it would have been different if otherwise but I know DHS didn’t play in it this year in all age groups. But I think you’d have to look at local fixtures and the results there.

When are we going to see this increased emphasis on soccer translate to success at national level?
Perhaps the first step is a Craven Week like tournament to drive the process of unearthing the best talent around.
I think a major problem with lower level soccer in SA is that the net isn’t spread wide enough to catch all the gifted players esp those from rural backgrounds.

@ H/F 1- Yes the Westville Ist team were more than average this year(after years of domination). When you lose class players like Boulle ect I suppose that can be expected. The school itself was certainly not average. When you have leaders in two age groups(U 14 and U16) and a contender in the U15 group, that speaks for itself. When Westville played schools like GW they won 82 % of the games scoring over 50 goals and conceding less than 10.It is called sustainability something that DHS is trying to achieve with its rugby. I must say though I am impressed with the athletics at DHS. That is a fact that cannot be denied. Also impressed with J.Kriels time in the 100m.(10.8)That is one thing you cannot coach and is priceless at the top level. Also with his size and instinct I think we need to watch this space.

I rememeber you mentioned your sons quite the sportsman and a good cricketer. I heard Westville are sending a development 1st team to Dubai for a tour there. Do you know anything about this.

@ Grassy-With regard to Ivan Clarke, I am glad that a Hilton OB gave a helping hand to a GW OB who returned the favor in bucket loads.
-Pfaff’s uncle was with me at Hilton and broke his brothers 100m record. The apple does not fall far from the tree. Their father Brian was a Springbok rugby player
@ Griffon- You will find that the Westville U14A were also unbeaten and so Horsy’s joy will be short lived. I quite like Weir as the enforcer next year with Jordan as the jumper.Prinsloo could also come into the equation and with Yuric there will be a bit of depth in the second row at Westville.Roll on 2013.

Hey! Why don’t you give a mention to the winners of the meet! Its only good manners! Plus, a 150 point winning margin is, in my opinion, something to talk about!

Just something off topic, I’d like to congragulate the u16 Westville age group for continuing with their great sporting achievments. The A-C soccer teams for going unbeaten. The u16 A also won their provincial agr group tournament going on to represent the province at the national stages. The team also boast 5 boys in the KZN squad. Well Done boys flying the Westville flag high

@ Grasshopper : Yes Weir does play rugby. He made Grant Khomo last year, and got injured during pre season. Played a game or 2 at the cloisure of the season. The u15 A Westville wing also broke the school record. He ran 11 seconds on the dot, and apparently he was far from his best. Hope Westville can utilize him more in the future

@Beet, yep I was one of those athletes who competed in the big Pentangular between College, PBHS, Glenwood, DHS and KES every year. Great times when we took athletics seriously. Tyrone Peacock at Glenwood was the best jumper in the province, over 7m in long jump, 2.18 high jump and over 14m in triple jump….amazing athlete. Yep, I thought Joubert was Glenwood…

@All, recent KZN athletics results; http://www.hssm.co.za/news/athletics/kwazulu-natal/durban/2012/sydney-atkinson-inter-school-athletics-boys-results

Interesting to see the sprint and power events for future rugga stars. Glenwood look to have a very quick under17 group winning the 4x100m in pretty much the same time as the Under19 winners. Z.Weir from Westville must be a powerhouse to win the shotput by such a big margin, does he play rugga? Holenstein from Hilton looks to be a powerhouse too. What is very interesting to me is that the performances are not as good as they were in the 90’s, either the kids don’t have the same power or just don’t have the technique in the power events. In my day Glenwood had 3 guys jumping over 2.15 in high jump….

@ All Black- I am not sure why you say I would be happy.I am predominantly a Westville/Hilton supporter and their representation on both teams was poor to say the least. I do agree however that domination over an extended period by one individual can never be productive for SBR rugby.
@ Beet-I agree that the tight 5 do provide the foundation for a team’s success. It would be interesting to analyse the potential front and second rows of the various schools to give an indicator of next years performances.

@star: The foundation of a good team is usual the tight 5 and House are looking strong in that area. Will be interesting to find out what Schwartz intends doing to accommodate Whiting, Holenstein and Grendon in the frontrow. I have watched Schoeman play 1sts in Pienaar absence and he looks like a very useful player, someone that will push hard for KZN Schools inclusion in 2013 I’m sure.

@ Beet You are right about Schoeman. He is in grade 11.It is surprising that Arnot did not make the team as he showed some wheels and finishing at CW. The MHS team for 2013 is starting to take some competitive shape now after most people had low expectations for the boys from the Midlands for next year.

I have to ask – who were the selectors.

Beet – I agree that the best team is not always made up of the best individuals, but not one player in the travelling team for College. Excuse my raised eyebrow, following so soon after the absence of College boys in the U16 HP Squad. Sometimes makes me think that College will have to keep getting the results but not the rewards.

It’s interesting that Nicholson-Deh did not get a taste of KZN 15-man provincial week action (he was at final trials) but he has a Bulls contract for 2013.

Also that u16 star Morné Joubert was good enough to be player of the Glenwood tournament but not good enough to crack the nod for the provincial tournament.
