Maritzburg College has named a team of 1st XV hopefuls combined with last year’s players to take on the hosts at the Voortrekker Night Series in Pietermaritzburg on Friday, 27 February. With numerous players either unavailable due to summer sports commitments or injury, College’s first outing of 2015 will be a chance for the new coaching staff to try out a few positional ideas as well as for fringe players to make an early impression.

Glenwood and Westville combined to produce a wonderful advert for schoolboy rugby during the Port Natal Night Series Round-4 match which Glenwood won 14-7. The score-line was academic really. The fast paced rugby was a pleasure to watch.…

News out of Durban North is that Northwood has welcomed several new foreigner students to their school. It’s unconfirmed but believed that as many as five boys from the Netherlands and Zimbabwe stand a good chance of being incorporated into their 1st XV rugby squad for 2015, which if all goes well should improve the school’s rugby outlook for this season.…

Michaelhouse turned down an invitation to play at Wilkeklawer 2015 in Kimberley. Had they accepted, they would have been the first private school to ever take part in the festival which is widely regarded as the top school rugby festival in South Africa. …

Glenwood and Maritzburg College will only have one proper inter-schools rugby day in 2015. The return match which has been a fixture on the KZN school rugby calendar for ages has been scrapped. In the same 2015 season, Maritzburg College will break ground by playing Westville in proper home and away inter-schools fixtures for the very first time.

According to the KZN newspaper the Daily News, more than 50 schoolbags belonging to Hillcrest High players attending a touch rugby tournament at Kings Park in Durban on Friday, were stolen out of their bus. The theft happened within an hour of their arrival at Kings Park and none of the bus windows were broken. …

KwaZulu-Natal is very passionate about schoolboy rugby. For decades school rugby in the region has been well organised, had good infrastructure and enjoyed a very strong support base. Many, many good rugby players have been produced by a number of schools in the province. However very few of these talented players have gone on to play for the Springboks. The truth is that as much as KZN loves their rugby and as big a part as the region plays in the overall well-being of the sport in this country, the province’s schools only account for just over 6% of the players that have represented South Africa on the international stage.…

But before anyone gets overexcited that Stefan’s now taking a greater interest in school rugby its worth mentioning that he is hosting a Gala Debate Evening at Maritzburg College on 01 October, so his tweets are probably just amounted to a bit of self-promotion more than anything else (not that I’m unhappy about it )…

Likeable and well-respected George Campbell head coach Antonie Prinsloo has accepted a Maths teaching post at Kearsney and will start in January 2015.…

Dean Carelse is officially the new Westville 1st XV rugby assistant coach. Carelse joined Westville from Grey High, where he had at a stage been the 1st XV coach. In this his first rugby season at Westville in 2014, he was head coach of their under-16A team. So it has been a meteoric rise to the top. Existing Kearsney head coach Frank Lubbe enjoyed a fitting end to his tenure at Kearsney when his team won the Voortrekker Sevens tournament on Saturday. Ironically the team they beat in the final was Maritzburg College, where Lubbe will ply his trade next year. On Botha’s Hill, the process to find his replacement is underway. Including Lubbe, Kearsney has had just 10 head coaches during a total of 73 seasons as a KwaZulu-Natal tier-1 team.…

Traditional Boys’ Schools Rugby Luncheon – 2014 (Report from Glenwood)

On Friday 29 August, the 10^th annual Traditional Schools Rugby Luncheon was again successfully hosted by Rob Visick, Doug Tweedie and their team at the Salt Rock Hotel on the KZN North Coast.

The 2014 edition continues to highlight the growth in popularity of the event with 180 guests from 9 of the Province’s Traditional Boys’ Rugby Schools all enjoying the camaraderie shared amongst these traditional rivals – both the Province and Schools were represented by some of their most well-known Old Boys and Rugby Families. …
