Sharks under 19 contracted players for 2015

29 October, 2014 beet 40

Sharks CEO John Smit has changed a number of things during his first year in charge at Kings Park but one that looks likely to stay the same is the union’s approach to contracting junior players.  Only 12 junior contracts for 2015 have been awarded. 11 to schoolboys with the other going to current Sharks under-19 starter Chris Lines who is still under-18 this year. …

Stefan Terblanche to host “Great Debate” at Maritzburg College

29 September, 2014 beet 132

The SchoolboyRugby Blog had the honour of Stefan Terblanche doing some free publicity work for the website via twitter recent. But before anyone gets overexcited that Stefan’s now taking a greater interest in school rugby its worth mentioning that he is hosting a Gala Debate Evening at Maritzburg College on 01 October, so his tweets are probably just amounted to a bit of self-promotion more than anything else (not that I’m unhappy about it :) )…

Kearsney in the market for a new rugby coach

15 September, 2014 beet 8

Existing Kearsney head coach Frank Lubbe enjoyed a fitting end to his tenure at Kearsney when his team won the Voortrekker Sevens tournament on Saturday. Ironically the team they beat in the final was Maritzburg College, where Lubbe will ply his trade next year. On Botha’s Hill, the process to find his replacement is underway. Including Lubbe, Kearsney has had just 10 head coaches during a total of 73 seasons as a KwaZulu-Natal tier-1 team.…

First of all I just want to say a big big thank you to Johan Snyman who updates the AffiesRugby.co.za website. Without his time and effort to retrieve the info and forward it, the database below would not have been possible.

If you have the first names of the players listed by just their initials, please forward it to beetb@telkomsa.net, so that the record can be completed. There is also a missing backline player’s name from 1997 as a result of a duplication. If you remember it, please post or forward it.…

KZN takes school Sevens more seriously

18 August, 2014 beet 8

Realising that school Sevens rugby offers players more opportunities than possibly given credit for in the past, including the chance to represent the provincial under-18 team in a televised game or two, which in turn could open several doors to a player who performs well, the KZNRU under the guidance of chairman Noel Ingle has introduced a welcomed restructuring, with the intention of making the selection of players a lot fairer than in the past.…

13 August, 2014 beet 58

Grey College and Maritzburg College have restored annual interschools ties after five seasons of inactivity. Their match will be broadcast on DSTV Supersport at 14h00 on Saturday, 16 August 2014.

Prior to 1997, the two schools met a handful of times over the years with the first meeting taking place way back in 1940. Then from 1997 for 12 consecutive seasons Grey against Maritzburg College was an annual fixture.…

Match report: Glenwood beats Maritzburg College 21-20

11 August, 2014 beet 171

Maritzburg College versus Glenwood games on Goldstones in Pietermaritzburg should carry a health warning. The closing stages of the last four matches between the KwaZulu-Natals intercity rivals on the famous ground have gone down to the wire. There is no ways this can be good for the hearts or nerves of the respective supporters but boy does it make for entertaining to watch rugby. …

Glenwood needs the Goldstones win to be absolutely sure of 1st place

5 August, 2014 beet 228

Glenwood will travel up the N3 freeway to Maritzburg College’s Goldstones on Saturday in search of a win period. The bonus will be that if they achieve it, they will be the undisputed No.1 team in KwaZulu-Natal for the 2014 season. Defeat would open up a potentially lively debate about who the best team in KwaZulu-Natal is in 2014 as it would probably result in College finishing ahead of Glenwood on a few different national ranking systems including the BHP used on this website.…

Sharks to get a brand new Kankowski in 2015

14 July, 2014 beet 0

With Ryan Kankowski (St Andrew’s) pretty much in the twilight years of his Sharks career, it will be exciting for Black and White supporters to welcome a new “Kanko” into their midst. Big Boland hooker Erich Kankowski of Piketburg High from impressed so much during a local Western Cape tournament held before Easter that he has earned himself a contract with the Durban based rugby union and will join them in 2015. Sadly Erich Kankowski had to withdraw from Craven Week due to injury. Interestingly his school teammate, tall lock Christie van der Merwe also stood out at the same Cape rugby festival and will also be heading to Durban in 2015.…

A KZN u19 for Noordvaal Week

29 June, 2014 beet 0

Okay okay KZN does not take part in the annual Under-19 Noordvaal Week which starts at Pukke on 30 June 2014  but I thought it would be a fun exercise to pick a KZN team from the fit players that were either overlooked for under-18 Craven Week or Academy Week or who were too old, and potentially could have represented the province with distinction I might add at Noordvaal Week.…

Michaelhouse looks to improve on a good season at Hilton

25 June, 2014 beet 32

Hilton prepares to host Michaelhouse in their final game of the season on Saturday 28 June 2014. This is traditionally the best attended KZN inter-schools match of the rugby season.

My feeling is that Michaelhouse will coast to victory in this game but earlier this year I have been cautioned  never to underestimate the underdog at this popular derby. …

Latest newspaper KZN recruitment article not saying anything new

23 June, 2014 beet 323

The latest media article on KZN school rugby recruitment appeared in the 22 June edition of the Sunday Tribune. There basically wasn’t anything new to offer on a topic that unfortunately is going to eventually lose it’s buzz the more often it gets reported on in the mainstream media. Probably the most interesting bit of information to take out of the report is that the KZN High School Rugby Association and all their affliliate schools will be formulating policy to guide rugby recruitment. It goes on to describe this as a positive attempt by rugby-playing schools to eliminate unfair practices. …

The KZN under-18 Craven Week team arrived in Northern Natal minus the services of several first choice players and included a few players who had been ruled out of Saturday’s KZN interschools fixtures for various reasons. Kearsney vs Michaelhouse

11 June, 2014 beet 4

The Kearsney-Michaelhouse inter-schools was scheduled to take place at Michaelhouse this year in accordance with the normal venue rotation. Michaelhouse then agreed to allow Kearsney to be hosts, which provided Kearsney with a suitable date for their Old Boys Day. In the long run the switch will be of benefit to both schools as it evens up their home and away games against the other current KZN tier-1 heavyweights. …
