DHL WP U-19 kept their perfect record intact despite a late scare
August 24, 2014
DHL Western Province kept their perfect record intact despite a late scare, EP Kings moved into the top four and the Vodacom Blue Bulls gave the Loftus faithful something to smile about in the past weekend’s Absa Provincial Under-19 Championship.

WP held out a strong finish from the Xerox Golden Lions at Newlands, winning 24-22, the Blue Bulls scored eight tries in a convincing 52-27 win and EP Kings got past the Toyota Free State in Uitenhage, winning 17-13.

A summary of the matches played are:

DHL Western Province 24 (17), Xerox Golden Lions 22 (8)

Western Province struck when when the Golden Lions had a player in the bin and scored twice in ten minutes. This gap proved a bridge too far for the visitors, who really fought back well in the latter stages of the match.

A late try by former Garsfontein High School winger Jade Solomons had the home side scampering to defend their unbeaten record and to their credit, they managed exactly that.

Scorers:

DHL WP (Under-19) 24 (17). Tries: Adriaan Carelse, Charlton Jonas, Dewald Naude. Conversions: Ernst Stapelberg (3). Penalty: Stapelberg.
Golden Lions (Under-19) 22 (8). Tries: Arnout Malherbe, Jade Solomons, Marnus Erasmus. Conversions: James Campbell (2). Penalty: Kobus Engelbrecht.

Vodacom Blue Bulls 52 (31), Leopards 27 (15)

In the Under-19 Absa Provincial Championship match played early on Saturday at Loftus Versfeld, the Vodacom Blue Bulls won 52-27 against the Leopards. They had a 31-15 lead at the break.

The Blue Bulls backline had too much space to run at and the visitors could not close all the gaps in time and five of their eight tries came from the high numbers on the back. Junior Bok Duhan van der Merwe scored a brace and now has crossed the opponent’s tryline four times in the competition.

Scorers:

Vodacom Blue Bulls (Under-19) 52 (31). Tries: Calvonn Allison, Albert van Niekerk, Dimitrio Tieties (2), Duhan van der Merwe (2), Hanro Liebenberg, Jurie Linde. Conversions: Dewald Human (6).
Leopards 27 (15). Tries: Elden Schoeman, Lawrence Mabokela, Ray van der Lith, Roelof Scheepers. Conversions: Julian Delicado (2). Penalty: Delicado.

EP Kings 17, Toyota Free State 13

The EP Kings won their third match of the competition with a hard-fought win over the Toyota Free State in Uitenhage. Again some indifferent kicking cost the visitors, who had now dropped two results due to that.

The Kings did better in the second half, overturning a half time deficit to hold on for a good win that moved them into fourth spot on the log.

Scorers:

EP Kings (Under-19) 17 (7). Tries: Jeremy Ward, Luan Nieuwoudt. Conversions: Malcolm Jaer (2). Penalty: Jaer.
Free State (Under-19) 13 (8). Tries: Ox Nche, Tyron Goddard. Penalty: Andre Swarts.

In the B-Division the home sides battled. Boland had too many guns for Border in East London, beating them 53-7 and SWD lost 32-17 in George to Down Touch Griffons. In Kempton Park Valke kept the home crowd happy with a hard-fought 35-28 win.

    @vatikaki: Thanks for that.

It was the impact of the shoulder IMO… but the head lock was totally unnecessary

You can see that it had nothing to do with Orie there – it was the impact made by the shoulder of Herbst on the top of JD’s head – just a very unlucky incident.

Okay if this is all there was to it, then it’s simply a terrible accident and nothing more.

Make head lock’s punishable with red cards and automatic suspension of 8 weeks. High tackles are punishable, why not head locks – it is ugly to see players head locking others.
Very glad to see him being able to move his legs and arms. A speedy recovery for you young man!!!

    @BuffelsCM:

    Marvin Orie.

Left wondering whether it was Herbst’s shoulder or Orie’s headlock and toss which broke his neck though.

If it’s the latter, ban the prick for a year at least.

I haven’t seen the match and therefore can’t comment but it is interesting that there was a request from WP that the manner in which the incident occurred should be investigated. They aren’t saying foul play was involved but would nevertheless appreciate an investigation.

Apparently the referee ignored the requests of the team doctor and captain to have a look at the replay. I really hope there was no foul play involved and that it was an accident. What concerns me is the report that his head was in a head lock of an opponent at the time of the injury.

Thank God he is ok, he is such a good guy. Right now, I think rugby will be far from mind, he is probably in shock and just thankful he can walk.

Concerns I had with JD’s game at the U20 JWC was about whether he brings enough physicality. He’s tall and skillful but a complete modern lock brings incredible physicality with it.

Hopefully this doesn’t stop his progress in that regard.

@RBugger: Article on the Province website says he has been operated on and should make a full recovery. Wish the young man all the best.

Word is that he broken his neck, terrible news for a certain star of the future. Let’s hope he is just able to recover, what a shock

@Buffel: Good luck to your son next year. The Kings proved to be a handful in some games so far this year – specifically at home. Although they played 7 games and the Sharks only 6 they’re still in front of the Sharks on the log.

@Bateleur: My son going to be playing with him next year at Kings. Looking forward to it. They should be competitive and turn a few heads.

Agree that Ward would have made a huge difference. Calvonne Allison, Hanro as well as the regular 6,7 & 8 of the Free State also having an excellent year.

Ward would have made a huge difference to the SA Schools team. Power speed and rhythm – and intelligence.

Hanro Liebenberg, the Bulls number 8 and Captain, is another one to watch. He is playing fantastic rugby and has come a long way since last year
