@BoishaaiPa: As I said WP is after him and he went to see them. What the deal is with the school and if any I don’t know.

I don’t know if he was given a option of schools or not. I cant ask him as he is at CW at the moment and will leave next Sunday.

I will give his girlfriends dad a call and ask him if he has more info.

@BoishaaiPa: His mom did not say to much except that she don’t want him to move now but rather after Gr 12.

He is represented by an agent. He also visited the Blue Bulls 4 weeks ago.

From what I understand, WP initiated the move. I haven’t had time to speak to the boy but he has made up his mind. A lot of rumors are going around what he has been offered, but I have no confirmation or facts. One of the reasons given is that he will have a better chance to make SA Schools side next year playing for WP.

He also want to play rugby professionally after school and had to decide going to the BB or WP.

    1. Who initiated the move.
    2. What is the reason for the move

I heard last week from one of the Selborne coaches that the Gr 11 boy who was approached by Glenwood, will now be reporting at Paarl BH on Monday 21 July for duty. He will be back from CW on Saturday 19 July, pack his stuff and travel to Paarl the next day. I confirmed this with his mother and girlfriend’s farther.

@Playa: @beet: Last year Selborne’s u16A lost to GCB by 34 to 7, while the u15A team beat GCB by 9 to 0…so if anything, this year’s Border u16A team should’ve been much stronger.

However, the above does not factor the following facts into the equation:
    1. As mentioned previously, Dale and Queens have been decimated in this age group; and
    2. the Selborne u16A team this year (while still a good team) has declined since 2013, as they lost by 7 to Boland Landbou and got thrashed by GCB in Bloem.

I know the Border u16A team did well last year because of a strong group mainly from Selborne u16A. Not sure about their u15A’s from 2013 tho.

I know that Queens and Dale have been decimated in this age group by players moving to Natal, Southdowns, Kingswood, etc…but didn’t Selborne beat GCB last year at u15 level? If so, I’d have thought that their nine players in the squad would have made the team more competitive than the scoreline suggests.

@Knight_CHS07: 17 of the 22 in the WP GK squad are from Paarl Gim (5), Boishaai (6), Paul Roos (2) and Boland Landbou (4), and all 4 of the mentioned schools are currently in the T10 for the u/16 age group rankings. There are some pretty special players in this group.

@Playa: Cant tell you if any other team of Selborne ever been unbeaten. I don’t keep record. Boland outplayed Selborne that day, and when Selborne woke up it was to late. When the Boland flyhalf kicked that drop goal I knew it was over. The flyhalf kept the big pack on the back foot and all over the field the whole game.

@GCollege86: Smart move. I watched those forwards bully Grey Bloem in EL. I sill say GCB were lucky to walk out with a draw there. Then they were made to look “okayish” by Dale the following week…until the last 10 minutes when Dalians just got tired of competing against those monsters and the flood gates opened.

Is my information correct that had it not been for the loss to Boland Landbou, this would have been Selborne’s first ever unbeaten 1st XV?

@Knight_CHS07: Very good team that 2011 side, but under achieved at the end. They kind of stayed on cloud 9 after beating Grey, and forgot to come back to earth. They had an easy win against Port Rex in their next game (the Cambridge game was cancelled due to floods – niyawuhlala nisinda), then lost 4 in a row (Rondebosch, SACS, St Andrews & Selborne) before picking themselves up against Hudson then ending the season with that great win at the Rec against QC.

Before that losing streak, they’d only lost 2 games out of 13 against Kearsney and Selborne.

LOL! Re Buchule. The year was 2007…we needed a victory if you know what I mean. SACS must have been really weak to lose to that Dale side

Do you know what amazes me is rugby writers or could I say local rugby writers I have read 3 articles in newspapers and sites in SA over the last week and they speak about the slide or going backwards or everybody is catching up all about All Black rugby.

And some of the points they use is this the All Black centre paring is old and who will replace them and the All Black wings are running out of steam and were are there attacking options from the back and the lock pair is the worst they have seen in decades and what on earth is going on with there fly halfs stating look at SA with all there talent Pollard/Boshoff/Goosen and so on.

So I thought lets look at that starting with there centres ye Smith/Nonu are a bit long in the tooth but still playing well and if they out well its bad you crap players like Feletoau/Sonny Bill/Nana Williams and co to replace them now that’s a disaster. Next the wings are running out of steam ye for sure drop the current useless wings and they have nobody to replace them, ye for sure who you trying to fool. Next no attacking options from the back well shame Ben Smith must be crap or something- come on. Next the weakest lock pairing Whitelock/Retallick ye they shocking aren’t they. And then well flyhalf,s are a mess at least we have Pollard/Boshoff/Goosen and they only have dead beats Carter/Barret/Cruden and the Highlanders fellow well they in big trouble.

Now am I just completely insane or are our writers just living on another flippen planet, please tell me.

@Playa: I prefer the idea of playing in the July holidays to be honest, 3 weeks without rugby is a long time for me. Think the solution would be to make it an u17 festival, as suggested last year, but obviously that is not part of the thinking at the moment. As far as I can remember there has been no reasons for excuses in the recent past either, just more reasons to smile

@Ploegskaar: Any reason why CSW cannot be played at the end of the rugby season? Maybe as a ‘Stayers’ festival. Both provinces play until August, and host it a week after the last weekend of matches. CW is obviously a burden on the festival, and I know the one year, Outeniqua pulled out just days before due to CW commitments…

And also…you Kaapies can stop making excuses when the Colony boys beat your ‘seccies’…

@BOG: I was involved with coaching and management at Cambridge till 2007. Cant believe how things changed since then. Hams still exist but no Rugby anymore. QT has one team and all other clubs are battling. Buffs club burnt down so they lost a lot of players.

There are a lot of factors but it’s mainly economics. Young players can’t afford the subs. The vast distances they have to travel due to the Premier league being expanded also has an impact. I was shown a photo the other day of a OB player kicking for poles at a club (Premier Club) in a remote area. You can’t see his boots because of the long grass and no lines on the field or any dressing rooms. I believe that up to 50% of games in certain areas are cancelled without prior notice. So they travel 300km just to return home without a game. Had a chat to one of the team managers the other day and he said they have given up on Border. Some of the teams would rather forfeit a game than play and lose. No action is taken against these clubs but they still have a vote when it comes to selecting the Border executives.

@GCollege86: Years ago, clubs were vibrant in the region- Buffs, Cambridge, Hams, OBs ect. Even QT had 2 clubs. On Saturdays, these clubs mustered up to 4 teams, admittedly, the 3rd and 4ths were there exclusively for the drinking afterwards and the 2nds just marginally better. A player who attended at least one practice session normally got rewarded with a spot in the 2nds. And even then, there were the occasional schoolboy who participated for the laugh. But I believe it was great fun.But now I believe some of the club houses are run down derelict ruins. Mind you, not much better elsewhere

@GCollege86: I thought so much. Definitely worth the trip then, but will bring QC OB Warren Cullinan with to shout abuse at you guys! Maybe Rudi can sponsor some brisket, the boys from Krull some smokey pinkies, Pholman from Farmhouse a few boxes of mala and myself our premium cheap braaiwors for a lekker braai  Maybe we can even get Brent Sussens to throw in a few Black Label quarts as well, see his stores are doing well in the EC.

@Ploegskaar: 15 Selborne boys made the CW and Academy side + 1 that’s out with injury. So of the 16 boys, eleven is still in grade 11 and will be back next year.

How many of this strong group of Selborne boys will we see at CSW in PE next year? Know it’s still a way to go, but same question goes for QC, Dale, The Pansies and Muir as well. Last visit to KWT was a good one for the Farmers, but it seems the Baboona will get an opportunity to right the results of 2011 and 2013 in 2015.

@BOG: Its really sad whats happening in Border. Even though rugby is healthy and very competitive at CW, Academy, GK and u13, it is not the case at club level.

For the major clubs in Border to compete in the Premier league, they have to be able to field a 1st, 2nd and u21 team. The problem is that hardly any of the clubs in Border has enough young players to field a u21 team. So they make use of school boys. So you have u17, u18 and u19 school boys who is playing in the u21 league at club level. These school boys are not 1st team players as the coaches prevent the 1st team players from playing for clubs. They are 2nd and 3rd team boys. Now these boys are not sent to CW trials, only 1st boys are sent.

When its time for u19 trials, the clubs send these boys who is playing for their u21 team to the trials. Because there are hardly any u19’s in Border you end up with trials where 30 players rock up.

Basically all the u19’s from last year has left. So I don’t know how the Border u21 side will do this year. The u19 side of this year will be lucky if they win one game. Hope I am wrong.

@Knight_CHS07: Overall, since the beginning of time, Dale has the upper hand. 67-35 or something. It is this century that has not been kind to us. Specifically, since 2005, all our boys’ school rivals have beaten us more times than we have beaten them. Then things look better when you look at 2010-2014.

Arrggghh…you know what they say about statistics

@BOG: I agree. CW should be under 19 for schoolboys. The post matric era that led to this change in categories is a thing of the past now.

Under 18 & 19 boys who have finished school can go and battle it out in the under 21 sides. Admittedly, the challenge is that club rugby is dead. The upside is those who don’t make the team early on can go and either study or acquire some other skill to occupy their time.

This, of course is in an ideal world.

@Playa: 8-O DC won 5 and SAC won 9. I think this is the first time i have seen Dale being dominated by another team. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with these stats, but then again…this is Dale we are talking about, they usually have the upper hand.

@GCollege86: That is the irony. Was it not last yrs Border U19 which gained promotion? But now its another group of players to “benefit”, but they will be slaughtered. On the other hand, the U 19 players of last yr who earned promotion, will be U20, the team which was relegated. It makes no sense. Also the sensitivity around U19 players playing for schools and CW, while they arrange a match like this? Thats why I think school rugby should be U19, including CW

@GCollege86: I think Boksmart allows under 17 players to play in an under 19 match. This is still shocking nonetheless. BRU needs to focus less on sandwich platters and drum sticks and more on actual rugby. Truly pathetic. They will get smashed in the under 19 currie cup.

The Border u18 CW side just played a warmup game against the Border u19 side. The score was 10 tries to 1 for Border u18’s. Not a good game and a lot of hard work ahead for CW coaches. Steyn (nr 10) and first choice scrumhalf did not play and I think that had a huge impact on the back line. Scrumming was bad. Loose forwards played well.

Border u19 must be the weakest side I have ever seen for a u19 side. They have school boys playing for them that plays 2nd and 3rd teams for their schools. One is still u17 and in Gr 11. Dont know how they allow that. What about “boksmart”. I asked an official if it was just an invitational side and he said no that it was the official Border U19 side. Cant see them winning any games this year.

@Knight_CHS07: SAC vs Dale since 2007…ok for my sanity I have gone back to 2000. SAC has been the dominant team since 2007 by some way.

    2000: DC won 15-9
    2001: SAC won 34-0
    2002: SAC won 6-5
    2003: DC won 12-5
    2004: DC won 39-7
    2005: SAC won 19-12
    2006: DC won 33-20
    2007: SAC won 22-6
    2008: SAC won 24-17
    2009: SAC won 18-17
    2010: SAC won 31-0
    2011: SAC won 15-14

As much as I have an affinity with Border, never have I been a greater supporter of the Griffons than this year. For me, almost the high light of CW. Yeah, bring it on!!!

The problem with CHS team is the backline…the scrum half’s need to practise their passing, the centres need to run into gaps and NOT pLAYERS :( . This “bouncing” business is getting old. @Playa: Depleted or not Cambridge and Hudson have a better age group than Dale! Are you trying to say that at u14 and u15 level they were depleted aswell when they lost to Cambridge and Hudson Park?

@Queenian: And what a bruising game of rugby that was. Gareth Heidtmann was a hazard to the Dale defence. That boy was taking everything up, he gained 5 meters on each run on average. If he grows any bigger and maintains his pace…he’ll be a problem when he’s under 18.

@CHS08: I reckon Otto and Fassi deserve their places though. They are the stand out players in a depleted Dale under 16 team. And just to echo Queenian, the QC number 2, 13 and 14 are phenomenal players. Haven seen their Hudson and Cambridge counterparts, so you are better to judge than I am. QC under 16s, though results say otherwise, they are a side that can play.

Jerome Bossr and James Monaghan are both ex-Dale Junior. James’s father is an Old Dalian if memory serves me right

@Queenian: What I mean’t to say is that Hudson and Cambridge haven’t lost BOTH to Dale and Queens since u14!!! I was in KWT when our 16a beat Dale 25-19. The score actually flatters Dale because we outplayed them! They scored the last 2 tries in the last 5 minutes when our players lost concetration! I tell you now our 16a are going to beat Queens in August Hudson and Cambridge should have more players than Dale and Queens!!!

@Queenian: Interestingly, Hudson u16A beat QC u16A 22-10 8-O . CHS u16A lost to Hudson by 1 point in a cracker of a game…CHS were cheated that day and the Hudson okes know it

@CHS08: Although teams at Under 16 level don’t always show you how good they will be at 1st team prime example is QC 1st this year quite a shocker and 2 years ago they only lost 1 or 2 games at Under 16 level none on the Border and now they a mess. (Although give them there due Fortuin now Bulls CW and Magodila who went to St Albans were stars and left.)

@spilly: I would rather not comment. A big discussion point here in Slummies. 9 Selborne boys made the Academy side nl. no 1 van Tonder (u17), no 3 Voigt (u17), no 4 Froneman (u17), no 6 Niewenhuizen (u17), no 8 Selem (u17), no 9 Alderman (u17), no 13 Da Silwa (u18), no 14 Coetzer (u17) and no 15 Mcloughlin (u18)

@CHS08: Dale Under 16 beat QC Under 16 this year in King by a few points and that’s the first time they have beaten them in senior school. You also mentioned why QC have 5 in the team and that is mainly because they are outside backs and they are really good. This QC team suffers a lot from under achieving and injuries last year they had 3 key players out the nearly the whole year and this year two forwards which has make there progress difficult. But they have a lot of talent and wait till 1st team level beside Selborne no other Border team will have the better of them. The year Cato under 16 this year and Smith under 15’s this play QC 1st there backline will be awesome they must be two of the best centre’s I have seen at school boy level.

@Playa: Morgan Steyn will be just as good at the Craven Week! @Beet: Thanks beet. Hayi hayi hayi players in South African rugby unlike our counterparts in NZ are not chosen on merit! Selborne, Hudson Park and Cambridge have the best u 16z in the Border they the top 3 yet Queens has 5 players in the squad compared to the Hudson and Cambridge 2. If I’m not mistaken Hudson and Cambridge since u14 haven’t lost to Queens! Same applies to Dale! I don’t know!

@CHS08: Hahahaha! Easy there tiger. Kaloku, SA Schools is picked based on performance at Craven Week. So if Morgan doesn’t perform, he’ll have to wait one more year. But yeah, he is easily the best schoolboy 10 in the country, but he must prove it at CW to earn the stripes.

@beet: Siyamthanda Mgubo is a centre, not a scrumie.
@CHS08: He is a centre buddy. He even played no.12 for Dale last weekend against Selborne.

    @spilly: I agree with you 100%. I think D. Voigt (Selborne no.3, in grade 11) should’ve been there.

@Gcollege86 Cannot believe that the grade 11 forwards from a dominant Selborne pack have not been considered on merit. I can only think that the Grens boys are in Matric , and are being rewarded for their consistency from U16 to Firsts.Hope those Selborne boys at least made the Academy side. How many boys from Selborne made the GK team.

@GCollege86:Siyamthanda Mgubo the current Dale 12 played 10 last year for Dale his u 18 not u17. The Grant Khomo week’ scrumhalf from last year plays for the Dale 2nds. Apart from the Grens 9 who is the best scrumhalf in the Border Region I don’t think the other players were chosen based on merit and form rather than reputation. I mean Brinks for example and even Nyalambisa for that matter are no way better than the Selborne 13! Jason Steyn is the best 8 in the Border Region yes but his reserve should be the Cambridge 8 Lusanda Badiyana not the Grens oke! How can Grens who were humiliated by the Selborne pack 2 weeks ago (I was watching) have so many forwards in the team? No man! Their scrumhalf half though deserves his place. He is a good.

@CHS08: I don’t know the boys or names that well but as far as I know that the centre for Dale played scrumhalf for the Grant Khomo side last year. I only know winnaar, khuze, folokwe and one or two other Dale boys who played Border u13 and u16 with my son.

    3 Curtley du Preez
    4 Henning Coetzee
    5 Nico Grobler
    6 Alno Schultz
8 Pierre Bester (captains them also)

    9 Reinhardt Engelbrecht
    12 Michael Brink

@beet: Apparently one of the better Border sides of recent years. They’ll raise a few eyebrows and that Grens pack is solid.

GCollege86 will have a better idea of who plays where, off hand from what he has said before, I think:

Curtley du Preez Grens – prop
    Henning Coetzee Grens – lock
    Pierre Bester Grens – lock
    Alno Schultz Grens – flank
Nico Grobler Grens – No 8

The no 9 and 13 I rate as good players. In the game against Selborne, their forwards were smashed.

Curtley du Preez Grens – prop
    Henning Coetzee Grens – lock
    Pierre Bester Grens – lock / no.8
    Alno Schultz Grens – no.6
    Nico Grobler Grens – lock
    Backs
    Reinhardt Engelbrecht Grens – Scrumhalf
    Michael Brink Grens – Centre
