@Rhino: it’s a vicious spiraling circle for schools and their management. If the 1st does not perform they don’t attract the grade 8 intake they need to continue to produce results. One OK year makes grade 8 ok so to improve the side they try bring in a star to make up for weak areas. Unfortunately all the major boys schools are in this cycle…..it’s sad but true. The days of naturally strong years and a few weak are over. Most of the sides have been groomed and manufactured from a young age. I know of recruits looking at 8 year olds for talent! One of life’s best attributes, loyalty to which all us bloggers have is being bred out of the youth…..in 20 years we won’t have passionate Old boys like us…

Yep i concur that is defo not cool at all. And it will cause a ripple down as in turn will affect others players who now also have to drop down a team throughout the teams. I know SBR is semi professional in a way nowadays but its still school boy rugby and that what the “higher people” need to think of. How do you marshall it properly though as schools are scared to have bad seasons as it affects how they are seen from the public as we are judged so much on rugby. interesting though..

@Grasshopper: The only new boys I have heard of are the two who have apparently come from Hudson Park. I believe one is a lock and the other a prop. I don’t know much else. I have heard murmurings of unhappiness that they are taking the places of boys who have been at the school since G8. Not on in my book.

@Westers: Well, they were close to being unbeaten and the rest of the age group the same so the depth will be there. Westville could challenge the Glenwood 2nd’s this year who have gone unbeaten locally for about 3 or 4 years now…

@star: With the large numbers that Westville have not many U17’s seem to make 1sts. Nor for that matter 2nds. The current matric year is the biggest intake that Westville has had if I am not mistaken. I know numbers doesn’t always mean quality, but the C, D and E sides through this age group did not lose many games, even to Glenwood, College and KES. So they do have strength in depth. The U17s are going to have to be super talented to break into 1st and I don’t think too many will make 2nds.

As an aside, I hear through the grapevine that the two imports are being given an opportunity to make an impact but are not really doing so. Still early days though.

@Grasshopper: Just to set the record straight, this years matrics were not unbeaten at age group level. As U16’s they did not lose to a local side (drew with College if my memory is correct) but did lose to KES. They also lost games in U14 and U15.

@Pedantic: I would have Brown in the starting line up at hooker as he brings that ‘DON’T CARE ABOUT REPUTATIONS’ attitude and will get stuck in. He reminds me of Nick Colepepper Junior who tackled everything that moved and put his body on the line. With a bit more phutu in the belly should bulk up nicely and be a real threat in 2015.

@RBugger: I feel with the lack of size in the pack – it may be an idea to bring Brown into the fray to add the required “mongrel” at the obvious risk of conceding penalties. Bam has been a loosie in the past so could slot in there.

@ RBugger- I would jump him at 4 and rotate. He must play no 8 and play a little looser. He has good balls skills and needs the freedom to express himself. Let Visser take the lead role as the hitman. Dixon can take that responsibility on next year.

@Star: Should Dixon play lock, presuming 4, his role would be that of enforcer, hitting rucks, being mongrol etc

He will be Grade 11 but he has the size, not sure if he is a lock though, would prefer him at 8…

@Buffel: No easy games anymore in KZN, it comes down to where they are played, home or away. Too me Westville are playing down their chances too much when the whole side is in matric. Westville have been building up to 2014 with there unbeaten age group side.

@star: As i have said before-the 3 schools to beat this year are College,Glenwood and Westville in that order. If anyone says different then they are smoking the illegal stuff. This does not mean that the rest are push overs. Kearsney and MHS will be there and there abouts with the rest playing for the minor places on the local ladder. Hilton re-building so too DHS. Northwood have almost a whole team returning so don’t take them too lightly.

@ Buffel- you are right. He did start in grade 8 at Westville but left to return in late grade 10.
@ Pedantic- good point. I think with all Westville’s big loosies he should look at the hooker position. However there is a lot of talent in the front row. Besides Pieterse, Bailey and Cody, there is Els( Border GK 2013) Stoltz ( KZN GK 2013) and Zincume ( KZN GK 2012). Princen is also pretty useful having been part of very good team over the years.
It is also interesting that there is not one U17 in Westville’s starting line up.Hilton have 10. Good to see how this rolls from year to year.Hilton should theoretically have a good year in 2015.

@star: Cool, I will take out 9 to get the College list to 30, which makes College 100% homegrown, all of them there since Grade 8

Of course the acid test is still going to be the teams that run onto the field, I wonder how many names have been missed on the lists above, and how many suddenly come to the fore now that they have hit testosterone peak at age 17. The College list has kids that played C and D team in Grade 8 and 9, and (admittedly in Skonks days) we famously found 4th and 5th team players making their way to the firsts in the space of a season, centres suddenly being flankers etc.

I have sent Beet the College list with the year of arrival, perhaps if everyone does so we can get the homegrown table going.

I stand to be corrected . Thomas came back to Westville in the 4th term 2012 (grade 10) from Hillcrest and has made a huge impact. Prefect 2014.Well done.

This year going to be very interesting as the season unfolds. As far as the Khomo side from 2012 is concerned- a lot of changes for the 2014 CW side. Boys have grown and there were a lot of injuries during trials that year.

@star: Westville is a very suburban school, meaning intake is quite local. Reason being no BE, or little BE. Glenwood on the other hand is far more cosmopolitan, kids from all over KZN and SA with a 240 kid BE. So a fifth of the school lives there. There are a number of reasons for kids coming in later, but close to 80% of the players being there at least 3 years makes it a ‘home grown’ team in my eyes.

@ Gungets- it is good to see the son of a previous College captain( Arntzen) in the mix . His father is a mate of my younger brother so must have been around 1985. All black would probably know.
I am going to add 4 more players to Westville to get to 30. Couch, Kitching,Mpilo and Shange. That means that Westville have 29 out of 30 from grade 8( 97%) and 33.33% from Westville Senior Primary School. If you add kids that live in Westville and the Highway area that % will be above 70%. I am including Thomas as home grown as he was at Westville in grade 8.

@McCulleys Workshop: The two schools allready got on well last year at Paarl Gym’s tournament. Suspect that Bader was the founder of this good spirit between the two schools. Great leader too. They even stood tunnel for each other. Great to see that. About CW. We will have to wait. Have not seen the other two boys, but when they match up, I’m holding thumbs for Bader.

@Gungets Tuft: Just take the grade each player started at the school .. average that number across the team – the lowest number is theoretically the school that has spent more time developing the team – so a perfect score would be 8 – simple maths lit

@Grasshopper: Maths Lit. Logic is my game, not this count and divide thing.

That said, what is the best way of measuring. How about total years at school as a percentage of max. Max is 15 x 5 (repeats don’t count, can’t have a dufus improving the score). 5 boys arriving in grade 11 means losing 15 points.

@Grasshopper: Moving to Hilton must have been a good move for Gouws .. nowhere on the radar at GK and now first pick for CW? He was an outstanding U13 player – one wonders what happened in between.

OK Thobejane was there in 2011 too, so add him that makes 20 from 27. Only Tredoux, Vidima, Muller, Jonas, Venter, Spam & Du Randt. Spam has been there over 3 years so could be added too, 21/27…….78%, almost an A…

According to my (pretty reliable source), the doubtful ones on the list were all 2nd form entrants. So, 1 grade 10 (missed grade 9 by an uncoordinated 5 minutes) and 2 grade 9’s.

One U19 who has been at College since 2nd form.

Score is 36/39, 92%. I can live with that.

@ RBugger- do not count the Westville pack out. If they go with my selections( Heystek, Meilhon and Erasmus) that will be the biggest back row in KZN.
Also a Grade 11 must not be expected to be an enforcer. Let him settle on his core role.

@Grasshopper: There’s a D Whiteman in the College list. I can find no record of when he arrived, n or do I remember seeing his name on any BE lists.

Tredoux must have snuck into Grade 10. What term did he arrive. Perhaps we need to make it the date of their first “January”, to avoid the “Wright Syndrome”.

I get 18, if you count your U14’s and U15’s (lets assume they arrived in U14 till you can confirm) = 18/30 from Grade 8 = 60% if you round it up = pass (don’t tell Bog!! )

As far as I am aware
    Heystek- Grade 10
Cody Thomas returned in Grade 10 but started in Grade 8
2 others not sure. Therefore 22 out of 26( at least). Grassy’s 9 is looking a bit bleak. And while we are talking homegrown, there at least 8 WSPS boys in the mix and another few I could add.

    @Gungets Tuft: That will be tough but interesting. I have a Glenwood 2011 yearbook and these guys were there then playing Under15;

    Percy Mngadi
    Kevin Du Randt
    Jaco Coetzee
    Kenny Van Niekerk
    K Khanyile
    Morne Joubert
    Ruben Fouche
    Chris Bredel
    Sheldon Beneke

Gouws left for Hilton. Not sure what happened to B Erwee, D Whiteman, D de Waal, J Dellis & B Ntlatywa. S Matiwane should be added to the squad above.

We know Tredoux and Vidima arrived in grade 10. Thobejane, Jonas and Spam Ncgobo must have been 2012.

    Under14’s that year;
    Murray Hand (Cpt)
    Blessing Thole
    Kwenzo Blose
    Nama Xaba
    Jaydon Morgan
    Ruan Van Rensburg
    Ilungi Mukendi
    Jordan Du Preez
    Lencho Breynard (B team)

So that leaves Donovan Du Randt, James Venter & MacMillan Muller as unaccounted for. Looks pretty ‘home grown’ to me. 9 definitely there from grade 8.

Does anyone want to place some bets on how many players from outside the lists above will actually run out. It’s a bit naughty, because Beet has given College 39 names, but I can take out 9 names to bring it to 30 to line up with House and Hilton, the other schools can top up with the 4 or 6 they need, then lets see how we actually turn out.

I also – given the player-trading going on – would like to draw up the “home-grown” chart that we spoke about last year. Next to the 30 names, put the grade at which they started the school.

Everyone is against brining in new players, lets see what the picture actually looks like (Expecting House to be close to 100%, Kearsney close as well)

    Who’s up for it?

@star: Well, Vidima and Du Randt at Glenwood a year ago were 1.90 and 93kg each, tiny by modern standards. They may have ‘beefed’ up since, not sure about growing taller though. Gouws and Martin will be first picks…Martin was 194cm and 100kg last year..

@ Grassy- Sorry man but there was an adjacent report for the Water polo by D.L M. but I have just checked the date and it was 19/10/13. What is interesting is that Westville reversed the Ist team result as well as effectively the U15A result where GW won 10-1. As U16s they were ” trounced”

@Grasshopper: I didn’t think they battled for money, they haven’t had issues with their Grade 8’s for 3 years now. It seems they struggle to hold on to them after that, either losing them to other schools or giving up sport.

Not all problems can be solved with money. It buys a pretty good band-aid, but doesn’t cure most ailments.

@Knight: Fully agree with your comments, players develop at different stages when they are young and a player not looked at a year ago, could come back a complete different package.

No one should be a shoe in when it comes to CW, it must be based on performance and form.

Tedder is a brilliant rugby player but people must not put him under too much pressure, this year, KC will not have the same strength in their pack as last year and his job at flyhalf will be far more challenging than before.

I know he will do a fine job but it is going to be interesting to see if he has to change his game

@Buffel: I think it’s a little to early to believe that Tedder or Jonas should be the CW 10 (no-one on this blog mentioned Schramm at 8 around this time last year and look what happened). I think there are some 10’s that will surprise. Personally, I have seen one play that made Webster and Tedder look like a distant second choice last year. Time will tell.

@Beet: I think Calvin Silson (U19 returning) could also get a look in for NW at flank.

@Grasshopper: I think you have it right. Tedder and Jonas for Craven week. Both have excellent rugby brains and play a different game. Jonas from standstill can make gaps from his quick feet and explosive off the mark pace. Tedder spots a gap where there seems to be nothing and he too has pace to burn. His defence is a strong part of his game and with 2 years at 1st team level behind him should be a handfull for other number 10’s.

@McCulleys Workshop: With the incumbant flyhalf at Kearsney and Jonas very special, Bader will have to be extra special. Pace and space a different factor at 1st team level so the Michaelhouse pack will have to work extra hard to make sure that he can show his talents and get the backline going.

@Koos Roos: Yep, good luck to Bader a great flyhalf, but he will be up against two really good ones for KZN schools in Curtas Jonas and Tristan Tedder. Tedder should be 1st choice but Jonas, if he stays fit, will be a close challenger. He reminds me of Dewald Human, lightning quick off a standing start, slippery and finds gaps causing havoc behind oppositions backs. He is little though, about 70kg…..

How that is done is going to left to the brains trust but it will be a difficult task. This side along with College are going to be the benchmarks when it comes to the 2014 season. We would have had a few games under the belt by the time we meet you on Dixons so hopefully we are ready for the fast paced game that Glenwood normally delivers. Would also be a good time for each school to comment on the scourge of the game we love – performance enhancing drugs .
