DHS looking for a Head of Rugby again

After just a few months in the position, Dru Nass is now officially the former Head of Rugby of Durban High School, having returned to the Eastern Cape (Queens Junior) for personal reasons.

Once described as the complete package teacher/coach Nass joined DHS from East London high school Hudson Park, where he had enjoyed relative success as the first team rugby coach and also had a good water polo background. His rugby appointment formed a key component in DHS’s preparations for their 150th birthday year in 2016. Apart from heading up rugby, Nass also coached the DHS under-16A team.

No doubt the DHS Governing Body will now go all out to attract the right man for the job. With Hilton having backed off substantially on the pay grade of their 1st XV coach with the recent appointment of teacher AC Blume, it’s now unclear who the best paid schoolboy rugby coach is in KwaZulu-Natal at present.  Given the DHS have a strong group of under-15’s and under-14’s coming through and the importance of these youngsters to “School’s” success in 2016, this Head of Rugby job could quite easily turn out to be the best paying one in the province.

An advert for the post which may or may not be restructured a little, is expected out soon.

@Queenian: Looks like he’ll be coaching Queens under 13A

@HORSEFLY NO.1: Dru schooled at Queens, and played in the fantastic 1997 Queens 1st team. I think that’s the context Queenian meant it in.

@Bonthuis: yes it would, in fact the best schoolboy fullback I have seen in KZN was Chris Micklewood from Westville, what a player! I also rate Tyler Fisher and Cameron Wright, all ex Westville…

Man oh man this bok squad is a disaster between quota,s and an idiot as a coach and I think some of the old boere bond mentality we are going no were fast.

Ban overseas players first and start with the young.

still what are the remarks on who will be the new head coach of DHS and who is the highest paid 1st 15 coach at school boy level,
I would think SE is close, with MHS being close 2nd if not top payers, even Kearsney should be considered

@Grasshopper: Given all your Westville bashing on the last blog, I sincerely wonder if your opinion of Zeilinga would be as high if he had gone to Westville! Probably not!

One step forward and three back; Bakkies, Fourrie or any player based oversees for that matter. Scarra, Malerbe and Goosen hardly played. With this selection policy we basically encouraged our youth to ply their trade oversees. Goodbye Cilliers, Charl, Rhodes, Fred, Reinach, De Jager, Demitri, Small Smith, Howard, De Allende, Kolbe etc etc. the AB are doing exactly the opposite. Geez, not sure I am going to watch these tests. HM is literally sh.ting on his own or should I say, our veranda.

@Westers: agreed or at least try and get Kockett. There are some seriously bizarre selections. Bakkies? Come on, at least give Lood de Jäger a chance. Goosen? What about Pollard or Zeilanga. Adriaanse and Nyakane? Where are they? Shocking selections all round…

@Westers: I’ve never rated McLeod, but in an environment where we have a shortage of brilliant scrummies he has been one of the best we have, and should be there.

I cannot understand how Johan Goosen gets the nod infront of Katrakilis. The man has only played 20 minutes of rugb in 8 months while the other has been one of the top performing number 10s in the country this year.

@Grasshopper: For once you and I are 100% in agreement. But it is clear to us all why he was picked.

I also don’t know how they can pick Louis Schreuder ahead of Charl McLeod. It is like chalk and cheese. They say McLeod is too old at 30. If that is the case why persist with Aplon who is 31? And why bring Bakkies back?

It’s also time to give the overseas guys the boot. They shouldn’t have the bread buttered on both sides.

i think the reversal of external coaches , could be due to the over kill in going for such coaches as BMH too much , but I don’t think that going back to teacher based 1st team coaching will serve well, there is just too much to it these days , teachers should be involved in the 2nd most important teams 16A
I think that DHS should look more at possibly a club coach in DRSU type level

Good win for Kearsney over rivals DHS in both Cricket (7wkts) and Basket Ball (51-49)

@Rhino: I think DHS want to go the teacher route though. It’s another interesting topic : teacher vs external coach. One minute you think well the tide has turned and internal coaches are being favoured then you see a big appointment like at HJS where the naming of a high profile external coach looks like a certainty

@HORSEFLY NO.1: I don’t think DHS should consider Kretzmann again. It came across that everything was in place for him to move earlier this year and he pulled out at the 11th hour

Interesting. Maybe they’ll make a re-attempt at getting the KES coach back again?

We’ll see though, doubt Al Hargreaves will give up rugby forr the gig

I say Mike Vowles or Kane Mavrodaris! Potentially Al Hargreaves if he comes back and gives up rugby. Could they entice Andrew Stewart back?
