I believe recategorisation is applied to all results against the team in question and the ranking points of all the teams that played against them will automatically be recalculated by the rankings model.
Although Garsfontein’s win ratio is low all their losses were respectable against strong opposition (including 2 in the top 4). I would not bet against them if they had to play either Hilton or Michaelhouse this weekend!
If Waterkloof was not in the 5 point category, they should definitely be and if you need a candidate to relegate from the category for this year to make way for Waterkloof, you do not need to look further than Outeniqua (2 teams in the top category has already beat them by 50 points plus).
I think the “a priori” information that BHP uses at the start of the season can be improved and this should reduce the need for recategorisation during the season. At the moment he uses “traditional rugby strength” and the rankings of the last 2-3 years.
Traditional rugby strength counts for less and less as SBR at 1st XV becomes more and more professional (and I am going to resist the temptation to give examples!). Your large (1000+ pupils) will however always have strength in numbers (larger pool to pick and/or develop talent from) even with only a semi-decent rugby programme. Without later grade recruitment your co-ed and smaller agricultural schools’ will be more seasonal.
The “last 2-3 years’s rankings” could be replaced with a weighted average of only last year’s 1st XV and U16A rankings with the weight allocated to the 1stXV ranking the % of Grade 11 players in the regular 23 man squad and the balance (to make up 100%) allocated to the U16A ranking. I believe this is a much better indicator of expected strength for the coming season at the start of the year? (A good example is Paul Roos that had very few matrics in their 1st XV last year and a very strong U16A side. Their performance and ranking this should not have come as a surprise to anybody.)
Transparency in the pre-season categorisation should also be considered, since it would remove any suspicions of tipping the scales and prevent the constant questioning and criticism of the rankings?
The same goes for the triggers and rules for mid-season recategorisation.

I have a question regarding the rankings: when a school’s category is changed, does it also affect results that have already passed? E.g., PRG’s win of 47-24 against Waterkloof looked like a pretty standard, expected result at the time, but has taken on considerably more significance in light of Kloof’s excellent further results. This also goes the opposite way: results against Garsfontein looked great but, in light of their results this season, has taken on less significance. So, does the reclassification only affect prospective fixtures or is it also applied retrospectively?

Soos hul sê “those who cannot do, teach”.

Aan my Affies vriend (ek het net een), wil ek net sê ek dink Affies is ‘n baie beter span as wat sy vertonings sover wys. Die games teen Paul Roos, Paarl Gim én Grey College kon maklik ‘n ander uitslag gehad het.

Then again, good teams win ugly….

Hel, ek hoop nie hulle speel hokkie op Markötter nie. Hulle groei hom mos lekker dik. Hulle sal dan met ‘n golfballetjie hokkie moet speel om die bal iewers te kry.
