@yesnomaybe (Comment #16)
The selectors probably don’t watch footage and seldom go to matches. They go with what’s in the system, irrespective of form or size, with a good dose of hearsay, school coaches’ preferences, CW coaches’ preferences and a bit of random selection hocus pocus to finish off their selection concoction. Our selection depth is fortunately good enough that even the 3rd best is often better than what the rest of the country can select, according to the unique selection criteria
The point for SA Rugby for Craven week (not perspective of players, but organizers as to why it should be beneficial for them to hold the tournament, besides sponsors) is to:
(1) Give lesser known talents the opportunity to test themselves against the “big-names” so that the scouting process of these players can be simplified. I’m thinking of guys like Gino Cupido, Jaco Grobbelaar and Batho Hlekani as examples of players from last year that I never heard about before CW who proved themselves to be able to fight alongside the big dogs.
(2) To see the “big-name” players go up against each other in a concentrated talent group, to see who is the cream of the crop and who is actually just a “flat track bully”.
For this to happen, especially in the WP area (and due to what sounds like biased selection processes, the Bulls as well) a rethink in selection processes needs to occur.
Bungee I agree 100% that we need to split the Cape into at least 2 sections, WP South & WP North.
North can be from Durbanville up to Paarl / Stellenbosch / Strand & South being from Stellenberg / Cape Town / Simonstown.
In this way it would be so much easier to organise practises etc.
The Academy side can be a combined side for U17’s only that are not good enough to make the main sides.
To even have trials in todays age is barbaric & crazy. The selectors have more than enough footage available on video to choose their teams. Surely the selectors go around to different matches on weekends & also have a look. The Matrics are busy with their mid-year exams & the rugby programs at the schools have not stopped so now having to fit the trials in as well is ludicrous. They then basically play a full match at trials which is intense as everyone wants to make a statement & all we end up doing is exposing the boys to unnecessary injuries, just ask the Gimmies scrumhalf. If they not sure on one or two boys they can ask them to come to a session and see whether there skill levels are up to scratch.

@Bungee (Comment #13)
@Snelvuur (Comment #9)
@Snelvuur (Comment #11)
Ek stem saam. Gim was baie beter teen Grey as teen PRG. HJS net mooi andersom. Interskole gaan interresant wees want beide spanne speel hardloop rugby.
@Trots HJS (Tandem) (Comment #10)
@Snelvuur (Comment #9)
@OomPB (Comment #8)
Kloof se enigste verloor is teen PRG.
