As Smallies said, he’s now Vice-Captain of the u20s. Scored a great try vs Argentina on Sunday. He’s still a phenomenal talent – just think he’s wasted at the Sharks. He could easily get Varsity Cup exposure if he goes to a union that participates in it.@Smallies (Comment #37)
He’s had some injury troubles, but seems to have toughened up. Think consistent rugby would be great for him.

Moet sê daar was skole met baie vollediger resultate as ander.
Vir my, verrassend, is daardie ander skool Selborne College.

Small change to the rankings published on 11/05/2024 –
    Trio upgraded to Cat 3.5.
This obviously improved the average points of all school that have played and beat Trio.

Gim, Grey, Wynberg, Boland LS, Oakdale LS, Stellenberg is almal groot hindernisse.

Numbers 1-5 all play each other this year. Six games have been played, with two coming up this Saturday. For all of them I think each game is important as an individual clash, but as a whole it also matters in how their season will be remembered. So far it is:
    PRG: 2/2
    Grey: 2/2
    Gim: 1/2
    Affies: 1/3
    HJS: 0/3

    In 2023 it was:
    Grey: 4/4
    Gim: 3/4
    PRG: 2/4
    HJS: 1/4
    Affies: 0/4

Keep in mind that the example you chose, Garsfontein is one of the most difficult to gauge long term as they conjure up new players from afar solely to play first team at awkward ages. Have a look at the article by beet comparing the GCB first team vs the Garsfontein first team, a Garsie attribute that seems to be changing now. That while the other big rugby schools have always had, over 100 years or so, a massive % hostel schoolboys from say Namibia etc. who do not even play rugby but attend without bursary for reasons very different than sport, which I DOUBT is the case at Garsies.

The formula by BHP is the best I believe, but is not the same one bookies will use to bet, as, for instance, it does not take into account travelling, altitude (as bookies, top athletes do and as the top 5 sports science institutes internationally do), injuries etc.

Also, the ranking is not a SBR ranking but only a first team ranking. SBR rankings in its purest form will measure depth across all teams, and many years (not sure about 2024), big dogs like GCB and Garsies completely fail in that regard, while Affies and PRG do not.

I like the way BHP’s ranking works for first teams and think BHP’s rating is the best in the business, and giving a specific weight to a specific tier of schools. @IanC, Garsfontein, your example, just losing to a top tier team must have more weight than Garsfontein beating a low tier team. Garsfontein beat Jeppe, and Jeppe beat Grey College, and Garsfontein lost by very small margins to many top teams. So, it makes sense, as long as the formula is applied consistently.

Based on what I have seen so far, my ranking would be, with teams sharing spots:

    1) Paarl Gimnasium
    2) GCB
    3) Affies/PRG
    4) Boland Landbou/DHS/Paarl HJS.

If it is about depth, the entire school, true SBR, SBR in its purest and most important form:

    1) PRG
    2) Paarl Gim
    3) Affies
    4) Paarl HJS

Based solely on who played who and lost to who

In my view, the more accurate ranking is the one Beet sometimes posts at the end of the season where it combines the 4 or 5 main Ranking blogs’ rankings….they are all subjective in different ways…but when put together seem the most valid.

110% agree. In this ranking as much as its referred to as a formula, it is part based on subjective categories and it does not take all the circumstances that influence results into account. Venue and weather being two obvious ones.

Howzit. A good part of the calculation is based on a tried and trusted formula explained if you click on the sidebar to the right heading:
    BHP Ranking Formula Explained Here.
The other part is a work in progress but to be transparent each ranked schools points per game has been included in the formbook above in the grey row below the results.
Garsfontein – very competitive 1st XV, almost exclusively playing strong opponents and losing by narrow margins in some of those big games.
Same can be said of HJS Paarl BH.
A measure is that HJS beat Oakdale 1st team by 9 points and the team in 25th spot just beat Oakdale 2nd team by one point. I won’t commit to saying its a good measure because if you follow schoolboy rugby for even just one season, you will realise that teams tend to be erratic and that there are numerous cases of school A beating school B, B beating school C and then C beating A. Amongst the biggest complaints coaches have week in, week out, is that they players either don’t listen or just do their own thing in opposition to what they practiced on the training ground. :-D

You get some credit if you lose a game. Garsfontein have played 7 very strong sides. They also lost to Affies, Paarl Boys, Oakdale and Stellenberg by 7 points or less so maybe get credit for that, am not sure.

I agree it does look a bit strange. A quirk of the system I suppose.

Charlie Hofmeyr play a weaker fixture list/circuit so don’t get as much credit for their wins. They’re doing great at the moment.

It’s all explained in an April 2017 post on here. Put BHP Ranking Formula Explanation in the search box and you’ll see it.

I don’t think any of the various rankings are perfect.

As a newcomer to your site (thank you much appreciated for your efforts), I need to understand how you get to these rankings, because they do not in the slightest make any sense to me. I have tried to analyse how you are getting to these positions but it’s not making sense.
Take Garsfontein for instance, sitting in 16th in the country, who have played 7 but lost 6. These guys should be in the 50th position!
Or HJS Paarl BH who have played 11 and lost 4, and sitting in 5th in the cowntree.
How do Garsfontein as an example sit in 16th above sides who have played 8 or 9 only losing 1 or 2 matches but sitting in 25th (played 9 and unbeaten) or 28th (played 10 drawn 1 lost 2). Please explain?
