March 2024
Jeppe has proven to the surprise package of this year’s NMI Noord-Suid tournament after putting in two excellent performances in what has was described as a death sentence tournament fixture list – Paarl Boys’ High School and Grey College – three days apart.
After an excellent first match first half against Paarl Boishaai in which the Jeppe Boys’ kept their esteemed opponents to 19-19, new Jeppe head coach Drickus Venter said
“ we need to replicate it in the 2nd half…”
And that is exactly what Jeppe did against South Africa’s top rugby school Grey College.
After putting in a shift in the first half to change ends at 16-14 up, many were waiting for the Jeppe legs to succumb to the pressure of the Grey tempo at some point in the second half and see the Bloem boys put daylight between the respective scores.
However guts-character-focus on the job at hand to the very end, saw the Johannesburg based boys’ school preventing the normally fluent Grey from settling into any sort of rhythm and making countless errors in the face of the stiff challenges.
It ended Jeppe 22 Grey College19
Jeppe had secured a famous, never to be forgotten win and etched their name in schoolboy history as one of the biggest schoolboy rugby upsets ever.

When I was in Brakpan there were three, the Casbah ,the Casablanka and the Tropicana…I think those were the names I left there in 1994 so the memory is fading a bit…

@JongMatie (Comment #69)
@Deon (Comment #68)
@Smallies (Comment #64)

@Smallies (Comment #43)
Brakpan is darem nie net sleg nie. Daars mos n baie famous Roadhouse daar…..selfs beter as Casbah Roadhouse in Alberton….
@BoishaaiPa (Comment #60)
@BoishaaiPa (Comment #29)
Still bloody brilliant! 9 in 10 games won, nuts! A good season for most schools is about 65%.
@tzavosky (Comment #59)
Korrek ja. Was ook Smallies op n tyd.
@BoishaaiPa (Comment #58)
Onder die naam GreyOom, as ek reg onthou.
@OomPB (Comment #56)
Dit was Johan SS..die oudste broer.Nie selfde persoon nie.
@OomPB (Comment #56)
@Jakkals (Comment #42)
@Snelvuur (Comment #54)
Ons kyk nooit weer terug nie – onwards and upwards,
@BoishaaiPa (Comment #45)
2012 en 2013 maak daardie statistiek redelik seer. 2013 was katastrofies sleg vir PRG. Ek is seker as jy daardie jaar uithaal, is die statistiek bo 70%.
@Smallies (Comment #50)
Dink Garsies sal Grey speel jaarliks by NS of Wildeklawer.
@BoishaaiPa (Comment #49)
🤣🤣
@Smallies (Comment #48)

Nooit aktief gewerf nie
@Asterix (Comment #35)
Yes, beet should post his letter (plus the photos) in a new article on this website, as it touched my heart and really represents the very best of SBR in SA. I have zero connection with GCB, but I am nevertheless also very proud of how they’ve handled this loss (in public anyway), including the bloggers on this website. Well done all….but heaven help the next team to face the mighty GCB!
@OudAffie (Comment #44)
Paul Roos by 68%
@BoishaaiPa (Comment #40)
Puik Statistiek.
@Jakkals (Comment #42)
@smallies
@Smallies (Comment #37)
Close..Grey 89%, HJSP 85%, Gim 79%, Affies 75%, Garsies 73% en Monnas 71%…Net 2 van die spanne speel Grey elke jaar so het n 90% kans om at least 1 game te verloor ook!
@OUD ANKER (Comment #38)
Ek gaan niks se nie want my bek was lekker groot die laaste paar dae,ek weet wel dat daar hard gepraat en gewerk sal word die volgende weke
@Smallies (Comment #28)
@BoishaaiPa (Comment #33)
80% Grey ,Boishaai
70% Gim, PRG, Affies ,Garsfontein
🙈🙈🙈
@Grasshopper (Comment #19)
KES have never beaten Grey – played four, lost four – closest was 1986 at the Saints festival where Grey scored in the last minute to win 22-18. Ruben Kruger and Pieter De Haas were in that Grey side. Watching Jeppe-Grey yesterday, I thought Jeppe hearts would be broken in a similar fashion, but they held on – what a brilliant result!
I just read the Facebook post of Jeppe’s Headmaster Dale Jackson on Supersports schools rugby, it does put a lot of things in perspective, Respect
Well done.
@BoishaaiPa (Comment #33)
Gim and Grey are the top dogs?
Only 2 schools over last 15 years that have a win ratio above 80%…next best is 4 schools in 70’s with 79%, 75% ,73% and 71%. Rest is all 68% and below. Want to take some guesses?.
@Roger (Comment #31)
Dale had many strong teams in the 90’s so I wouldn’t be surprised.
I saw somewhere on Facebook that Grey lost to Dale in 1993 at the Saints rugby festival – Dale were unbeaten that year I think?
@KES Oldboy (Comment #11)
What makes it even more interesting was that 2017 Selborne side was wildly inconsistent that year. We had lost to Dale the weekend before so most of us believed Grey would win by 50 or worse.
@Grasshopper (Comment #24)
Actually updated now to played 226, Won 202, Lost 18 and Drew 6. Winratio of 89.38. Latest up to Jeppe game.
@BoishaaiPa (Comment #27)
@Smallies (Comment #25)
Ja..in Bloem. Verkeerd gelyk.
@Grasshopper (Comment #24)
Winratio is just below 90% at 89.73% as they had some draws..Played 224, won 201, lost 17 and 6 draws.
@BoishaaiPa (Comment #23)
Ons het laas jaar in George gespeel so dit sal in Bloem wees
@BoishaaiPa (Comment #20)
17 times in 15 years is incredible! So at an avg of 15 games a year, that’s 23 out of 300, 92% win ratio. 2018 draw for Glenwood gave us an unbeaten season & probably the best of the schools history considering the opposition.
@OUD ANKER (Comment #22)
Kwaggas in George.
@Smallies (Comment #17)
Teen wie is Grey se volgende wedstryd? Ek kry daai span/skool BAIE jammer!
@KES Oldboy (Comment #11)
So that bad run against Monnas was in the 90’s ….the less said about that the better🙈🙈🙈
@KES Oldboy (Comment #11)
Since 2009…Grey lost 17 Games..3 to PR..4 to Paarl Boys…3 to Paarl Gim, 3 to Affies…1 each to Outeniqua (2013), Grey PE (2014), Monnas(2015), Selborne(2017) with 6 Draws against Selborne (2011), Paarl Boys (2011), Monnas (2014), Diamantveld (2015), Glenwood(2018) and Oakdale (2022).
@KES Oldboy (Comment #9)
KES in the 80s, surely. Their record in Bloem must be high 90%, even 99%. Something daunting about Grey at Grey in winter on a rock solid grass less field at 3.30pm
@Smallies (Comment #17)
@JongMatie (Comment #16)
@Smallies (Comment #14)
So stadig soos Grey by die afbreekpunte gister
moeilike jaar vir Grey Kollege wat voorle.
@JongMatie (Comment #12)
@KES Oldboy (Comment #11)
If I’m correct they lost a few to Monnas in the early 2000’s there was a time when Monnas realy had their nr…2014 Lost to Grey high featuring Curwin Bosch
@Smallies (Comment #10)
2024 not 2023….
@Smallies (Comment #10)
Amazing record that! I hope you saw my earlier post…can you remember which other “non super schools” have beaten them this century? My guess about Selborne was correct…
@beet (Comment #4)
In the past 8 years Grey lost 6 games
2017 Boishaai,Selborne
2021 Gim
2022 Gim, PRG
2023 Jeppe
They now form part of a very select club
@beet (Comment #4)
If I’m understanding your post correctly, then Grey have lost 26 matches since 2002. Is that correct? Then my next question is that if you ignore their losses to the other 4 “super schools” PRG, HJS, Gim & Affies, then which other schools have beaten them in this period? I’ll kick off by saying Grey High 3 times, Glenwood once, Maritzburg College once, Jeppe now and possibly Waterkloof Selborne & Monument ? I’d be interested to know……
@theblackandwhite (Comment #6)
Yes it has been a tradition for a number if years now, the captain staying and cleaning
Wow! What a sensational result for Jeppe. Considering the events over the last few weeks, this result will go down in the history books as one of the greatest school boy wins of all time.
I think the Jeppe Boys lived up to their motto – Forti Nihil Difficilius – Nothing is too difficult for the brave. Apologies to Jeppe Boys if my translation of the motto is inaccurate.
@beet (Comment #4)
An incredible achievement for those boys, as well to the coaching staff, if I am not mistaken it is the first season for the new Head Coach. There are several pictures and comments floating on social media, but it is the picture of the captain cleaning the changing room before they leave that warms my heart most! Character both on and off the field.
I love schoolboy RUGBY. Coaches, schools, parents, players, supporters!! What a national cultural societal treasure!
@Loubser (Comment #3)
Agreed. If one goes back a couple of decades, there is a very select group of men aged 40 and under who can say they played in a 1st XV that beat Grey. 26 teams in total between 2002 and 2024, so probably just a little over 400 former players including reserves (probably an average of fewer than 20 per year).
So definitely an achievement that their kids and maybe even their kids kids will one day be able to mention.
Yeah, well done to the Jeppe Boys, you guys kept grinding it out all the way to the end and it paid off, bragging rights for life. Make no mistake Grey is Grey and what the Jeppe team did last night I am not sure many of the big rugby names is going to manage so be very proud, from a Affie supporter I was Jeppe all the way last night.
Honestly if you told me in 2009 that Jeppe would one day win a 1st team game of rugby against Grey College of Bloemfontein….. I would have asked you to share what you are smoking…… truly headline making stuff …. For us to be first team to beat Grey in over a year is truly remarkable
Welll done to Jeppe. You took the fight to Grey and forced them into mistakes.
