Jeppe-yi-yay! Jeppe beats Grey College

March 2024
Jeppe has proven to the surprise package of this year’s NMI Noord-Suid tournament after putting in two excellent performances in what has was described as a death sentence tournament fixture list – Paarl Boys’ High School and Grey College – three days apart.

After an excellent first match first half against Paarl Boishaai in which the Jeppe Boys’ kept their esteemed opponents to 19-19, new Jeppe head coach Drickus Venter said

“ we need to replicate it in the 2nd half…”

And that is exactly what Jeppe did against South Africa’s top rugby school Grey College.

After putting in a shift in the first half to change ends at 16-14 up, many were waiting for the Jeppe legs to succumb to the pressure of the Grey tempo at some point in the second half and see the Bloem boys put daylight between the respective scores.

However guts-character-focus on the job at hand to the very end, saw the Johannesburg based boys’ school preventing the normally fluent Grey from settling into any sort of rhythm and making countless errors in the face of the stiff challenges.

It ended Jeppe 22 Grey  College19

Jeppe had secured a famous, never to be forgotten win and etched their name in schoolboy history as one of the biggest schoolboy rugby upsets ever.

When I was in Brakpan there were three, the Casbah ,the Casablanka and the Tropicana…I think those were the names I left there in 1994 so the memory is fading a bit…

KES have never beaten Grey – played four, lost four – closest was 1986 at the Saints festival where Grey scored in the last minute to win 22-18. Ruben Kruger and Pieter De Haas were in that Grey side. Watching Jeppe-Grey yesterday, I thought Jeppe hearts would be broken in a similar fashion, but they held on – what a brilliant result!

If I’m understanding your post correctly, then Grey have lost 26 matches since 2002. Is that correct? Then my next question is that if you ignore their losses to the other 4 “super schools” PRG, HJS, Gim & Affies, then which other schools have beaten them in this period? I’ll kick off by saying Grey High 3 times, Glenwood once, Maritzburg College once, Jeppe now and possibly Waterkloof Selborne & Monument ? I’d be interested to know……

Wow! What a sensational result for Jeppe. Considering the events over the last few weeks, this result will go down in the history books as one of the greatest school boy wins of all time.
I think the Jeppe Boys lived up to their motto – Forti Nihil Difficilius – Nothing is too difficult for the brave. Apologies to Jeppe Boys if my translation of the motto is inaccurate.

An incredible achievement for those boys, as well to the coaching staff, if I am not mistaken it is the first season for the new Head Coach. There are several pictures and comments floating on social media, but it is the picture of the captain cleaning the changing room before they leave that warms my heart most! Agreed. If one goes back a couple of decades, there is a very select group of men aged 40 and under who can say they played in a 1st XV that beat Grey. 26 teams in total between 2002 and 2024, so probably just a little over 400 former players including reserves (probably an average of fewer than 20 per year).

So definitely an achievement that their kids and maybe even their kids kids will one day be able to mention.
