St Andrew’s College rugby coaching restructure

St Andrew’s (SAC) in Makhanda is undergoing a bit of a rugby facelift.

Out are the head coach Andy Royle and head of rugby Gerry Posthumus.

Andy Royle, who spent nine years at SAC, has been described as a gentleman who was as gracious and humble in victory as he was in defeat, will be heading to the UK.
The SAC X tweet mentioned the following:
“…his statistical success elevated the school’s ranking from 33rd to 15th, reaching as high as 7th in 2019. Andy’s coaching achievements include a 70% win record in 105 games and notable team and player performance milestones. A true leader, role model, and advocate for positive culture…”

Gerry Posthumus, a maths teacher, will be re-joining Wynberg Boys’ High in Cape Town, the school he left after eight years to start at SAC in 2010. Not only will he be a valuable addition as an all-round coach, as a school rugby commentator, he’s one of the best out there and therefore has unrealised worth for marketing purposes.

Old Andrean Jonny Mallett, the teacher in charge of rugby is promoted to the 1st XV. Jonny was a top rugby player in the 1999 team under legendary Andre Jacobs, who is credited with bringing the Bishops brand off expansive rugby to the college. Also significant is that Jonny adds to a bit of history because between 2017 and 2021 he served at main rivals Kingswood as their director of rugby and head coach.
